Abstract

A method for deducing user interest in, and the valuation of, specific pieces of information presented to a user within an information structure. Such information structures include, for example, websites and webpages. The textual and graphical objects on a webpage are associated with an area for adding annotations that pertain to the objects. The user selects, or highlights, certain objects and enters annotations in the appropriate area. Thereafter, a level of interest (or valuation) of an object, a set of objects, or an information structure can be deduced from the annotations. This level of interest can be used to develop a model of a particular user or group of users. A pattern of progression through a set of information can also be developed. The model or pattern can be used to direct subsequent presentation of information to the user. The relative valuation of the information might be used to direct further development (or editing) of the content of a website. The annotations can also be searched and used to present hierarchical layouts of information according to such search criteria.
