Description

INFORMATION ACQUISITION METHOD IN INTERNET AND COMPUTER READABLE MEDIUM FOR STORING PROGRAM FOR
CARRYING OUT THE METHOD
Technical Field
The present invention relates to a method for obtaining information through Internet and, more particularly, to a method of searching lots of information in a batch processing and viewing contents of the searched information.
Background Art
Owing to developments of communication technologies and generalization of computers, Internet is widely being used for obtaining information at homes or offices. The Internet is a worldwide computer network through which computer users can surf desired information or communicate with one another all any time. When acquiring information from the Internet, particularly in the World-Wide Web (WWW), a user commonly uses a program called a web browser. That is, the user who wishes to search information typically transmits an HTTP request to a specific web site by inputting the address of the web site and receives the information through an HTTP response from the web site. Those who frequently uses the Internet generally searches, during a session, various kinds of information in several fields rather than a single or a few web documents. Information which is frequently accessed by the Internet users include political and economic news, economic information such as stock quotes and economic indices, and cultural information related to performances, hobbies and leisure, etc. Detailed information frequently accessed by a specific user typically depends on the job, character, and age of the user. When the user is to obtain or view various information as above, the user typically sequentially selects a next web document by clicking a hyperlinked character string or image in the Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) documents provided by the web site while browsing the web site. If a web site does not provide all the information which the user is concerned with, the user generally visits plural web sites as necessary. Meanwhile, due to the increase of the Internet users, the web servers of popular web sites have considerable traffic burdens. Accordingly, the users of such web sites frequently experience connection problems or too lower data rates. On the other hand, developments of Internet backbones and subscriber networks are slow compared with the increases of the Internet users and Internet traffic, which also influence on the speeds of the information searches and transmission rates. If the data transmission rates are so low, the users have to waste much time in obtaining desired information. In order to facilitate the information search in many and unspecified web sites, search engines are widely being used. The search engine, which maintains index data collected by a search robot in a huge database of data, provides the index data to the user to help the user find web sites relating to a requested subject. For this purpose, the search robot surfs the web to collect new or updated information from the Internet. However, the information collected by the search engine is not customized sufficiently to the needs of each user, but includes not so few web documents unnecessary to the user. Furthermore, the information provided by the search engine is not updated with the latest data because the search engine does not search all the web sites so frequently, for example, several times a day. Push technology is developed and utilized to reduce the burden of the users of visiting several web sites for collecting information and provide updated information relatively customized to the request of each user. The push technology means an information providing scheme in which a push server sends information to users before they actually request it once the user sets up a profile specifying the type of desired information. According to the push technology, the user can save considerable time for the information acquisition because the user needs not surfing a number of web sites individually to search the desired information and can view such information after downloading and storing in a hard disk. However, the push technology has a drawback in that the types of information which can be specified by each user are limited to several large categories preset by the push server Therefore, in the case that the user wants to acquire information directed to a specific subject rather than a general one, the push server cannot appropriately provide the push service Accordingly, the user often has to endure the receipt of unnecessary information when the user tries to receive the push service for a topic directed to a specific subject In such cases, the time required for the information acquisition may be much longer than the case that the push service is not utilized
Furthermore, the information source used by the push server is generally restricted to predetermined web sites For example, the push server providing the push service for a 'news' field may obtain and provide news articles from just a single or a few of newspaper sites Moreover, such a push server generally does not provide foreign news Therefore, the push technology is not utilized sufficiently in the information acquisition through the Internet, but used in a limited extent in receiving a News-on-Demand service
Disclosure of the Invention
In order to solve the above problems, the object of the present invention is to provide a information acquisition method enabling each Internet user to acquire information specifically required in his or her own standpoint regarding various topics The information acquisition method for achieving the above object is implemented by a program executed in a data terminal. The data terminal comprises a display and a recording medium for storing data, and is capable of being connected to multiple Internet servers through a communication network for searching and receiving web documents from the Internet servers to show the web documents on the display The program can be adapted to be executed in all types of terminal capable of accessing Internet The data terminal may be selected from a group comprising, but not limited to, a computer, a portable phone, or a personal digital assistance (PDA)
The user can selectively activate each of plural topics or channels in a main console having a shape of remote controller Also, when activating each topic, the user can set up a keyword for searching the web documents and an address of at least one Internet server of the plurality of servers For an activated topic, the program automatically searches and downloads web documents immediately or at a reserved time to save the downloaded documents in the recording medium After the completion of saving, the user can view the contents of the saved documents no matter whether the data terminal is connected to the communication network.

When searching and saving web documents using the program of the present invention, the user can download and save either full texts or just titles of the documents In FIG 4, a "Search/Saving Style" field is used to determine the style that the web document is downloaded and stored in the hard disk "Stand-by Time" means the time peπod the program waits for the response from each of the web sites When the stand-by time for a web site expires, the program terminates the connection to the web site and tries to establish a connection to another web site or stop the search operation
In the preferred embodiment, the search keyword may be specified separately to each of the plurality of web sites Alternatively, however, a single keyword may be commonly specified to all the web sites belonging to a channel When carrying out the search, the program accesses a search page of each web site and provides the keyword to the search page, so that the server of the web site performs the search for the keyword and transmits the search result In case that the web site does not provide the search page, the program requests the search to an external search engine with the specification of the keyword, domain name, and created date Alternatively, the program of the present invention may include its own search robot If the channel setting is completely specified or changed in step 88, the channel is activated
Referring back to FIG 2, when it is determined that a button is clicked m the step 72 and the clicked button is the "EXECUTION" (step 78), information search process is carried out immediately according to the channel settings Searched information is sequentially stored in the hard disk FIG 5 illustrates the searching and saving process in detail First, the program searches and downloads information of the activated channels according to the setting of the channels (step 100) The downloaded web documents are stored in the hard disk (step 102) Upon completion of the search process, the program shows a completion message on the display so that the user may know the completion FIG. 6 illustrates an example of a directory structure of web documents stored in the hard disk. As shown in the drawings, the name of each subdirectory is assigned according to the date and time at which the saving task is carried out. For example, when a downloading and saving process is initiated at 05:00 of July 29, a subdirectory "0500" is created under a directory "0729" so that download web documents are stored in this directory. In case that the saving processes by the program are carried out twice in a day, for example at 05:00 and at 12:30, two subdirectories "0500" and "1230" are created and download web documents are stored in the directory corresponding to the respective session. Meanwhile, the directory structure of FIG. 6 applies in the case that each web document is saved into at least one file. However, in the case that the "Search/Saving Style" field has been set so that only the titles of web titles are stored, all the titles downloaded in a session are saved into a single file.
Referring back to FIG. 2, when it is determined that the "RESERVATION" button is clicked in the step 80, reserved search process is carried out according to the channel settings (step 26). In a preferred embodiment, the user may reserve a time and keyword after clicking the "RESERVATION" button 61 (step 92). Accordingly, the search process is carried out at the reserved time using the reserved keyword. All the channel settings mentioned in connection with the steps 86 and 88 other than the reserved time and keyword are used In the reserved search process. Alternatively, the reservation time and keyword may not be input after the "RESERVATION" button is clicked, so that all the channel settings input through the channel setting console may be used in the reservation search precess. Particularly, the reservation search precess may be performed periodically as long as the computer is turned on. In such a case, it is preferable that dialog boxes for inputting "RESERVATION TIME", "PERIODIC RESERVATION CHECK" and "RESERVATION PERIOD" is added in the channel setting console of FIG. 4. The web documents searched and downloaded during the reservation search precess are stored in the hard disk according to the directory structure of FIG. 5, also.
