Description
Application for Patent
Interface for conversion of electronic currency to accepted method of payments to merchants/entites.
Brief Summary of Invention:
The request for a patent is for the system/process/method of performing as an interface for holders of electronic currency (otherwise known as electronic money) and pre-paid cards, account numbers or electronic wallets so as to enable the holder to purchase any goods or services offered by merchants or entities on the Internet. An interface web site allows holders of the electronic currencies to shop through the interface shopping portal web site at any merchant on the Internet and then the interface site accepts the customer's electronic currency or pre-paid card and pays the merchant in the form that he requires. Most often this method will be in the form of the corporate credit card payment belonging to the interface site, but is not limited to this method. Currently there are electronic currencies and pre-paid Internet cards that have been developed, but there is extremely limited acceptance of these by merchants. This interface is designed to make electronic currencies spendable at any merchant through the use of the interface which pays the merchant in the form he requires and thus makes electronic currencies and pre-paid cards spendable at every merchant that ordinarily would not accept the electronic currency or pre-paid card directly as payment.
This interface invention is also claimed for real, hard-currency accounts held by a bank or financial services company. A bank or financial institution would have an Internet interface web site would allow customers who hold an account to shop any merchant on the Internet and have their account debited and the interface would pay the merchant in the form he requires, i.e. a bank owned credit card. This is convenient for bank account holders who do not have a credit card to shop on the net or due to security concerns do not want to use their credit card for Internet purchases.
This function of an interface as described above is also claimed to work with ATM and POS systems as well where the POS or ATM would accept the electronic currency and pay the merchant in the form required.
The interface may be used for remittances via SWIFT or Western Union where the interface site accepts the electronic currency and pays the financial intermediary in the form required by the intermediary.

Detailed Description of Invention:
The invention is generally directed to electronic money/Internet/POS/ATM payment systems, and specifically relates to a procedure and method whereby customers can purchase goods and services on the Internet/POS/ATM or other similar mechanism with an electronic currency or a pre-paid card or number by using a web site portal interface, or POS/ ATM or other mechanism, to accept the electronic currency as payment that will make payment to the merchant in a payment form that the merchant accepts. In most cases the payment will be made by corporate credit card of the interface company, but is not limited to this method of payment. The electronic currency interface allows for holders to spend their electronic currency anywhere on the Internet/POS/ATM that normally only accepts payments in forms other than electronic currency, such as credit cards. The invention will also allow persons to purchase goods or services on the Internet/POS/ATM or other mechanism without having to reveal their identity, personal financial information or shipping/delivery information.
In a first, separate aspect of the invention (for the Internet), the customer would go to the URL address of the web site portal electronic interface and then the customer chooses a destination merchant for where the customer will shop from either activating an icon on the web site or typing in the URL in a space provided on the web page. This will open the merchant's site where the customer can shop. The merchant's site may be opened inside a window of the interface site.
The customer will shop as normally as if he had gone to the merchant's site directly. When the customer clicks on "checkout" on either the merchant's site or on a pop up window that is displayed or on the interface window. When this is done the customer will be requested to type in his pre-paid card number or account number into a specified space. Then there will be an authorization process that will confirm whether or not the customer has the funds available for the purchase. If the customer does have funds available then the payment interface makes the payment to the merchant in the form that he requires. Most often this form with be in the form of a corporate credit card from the interface site. The interface site inserts the credit card number onto the merchant's template and the sale is concluded as normal for the merchant since he is still receiving payment via a credit card. The customer still types in his name and shipping address on the merchant's template. The sale is concluded and the customer is notified of the conclusion of the sale.
If the interface is being used by hard currency accounts at a bank or financial institution, there would still be an interface on the Internet/POS/ATM that would accept payment from debiting the customer's account and make payment on his behalf to the merchant in the form of a credit card or other payment method belonging to the finanicial institution. The same system as the above discription would still take place.
Thus, we have achieved making any pre-paid card or electronic currency accepted at any merchant on the Internet that accepts payment via credit cards and allows the huge market of those without credit cards or those who have them but do not want to
use them on the Internet the ability to purchase items on the Internet without a credit card and offers pre-paid cards or electronic currency universal acceptance on the net where the merchants do not have to sign any agreements or install any software to accept payment from those with pre-paid cards or electronic currencies.
Field of the Invention:
The invention is in the field of electronic money/Internet payment systems.
Background of the Invention:
In part due to the advent of the Internet, electronic currencies and their purchasing, dispensing, recording and accounting have been developed. Examples of developed electronic currencies are "Cybercash" and "Digicash" or "ecash". Pre-paid Internet cards have been developed, however they have very limited acceptance from Internet merchants who have to sign agreements and install software in order to accept payment from these new payment methods.
So far, merchants have shown little interest in accepting payment via pre-paid cards since their acceptance is so small. With our interface, we are able to give pre-paid cards and electronic currencies universal spendability on the Internet just as large of spendability as Visa/MasterCard and other major credit cards.
The Internet is now huge and will only continue to grow. E-commerce is growing at more than 60% per year and will continue to expand rapidly. Most merchants on the Internet only accept credit cards as payment for goods and services.
The electronic currencies and current patents provide for the form, structure, methods of issuance, recording and accounting. However, there is a difficulty that most suppliers of goods and services do not accept electronic currency. The electronic currency interface solves this problem by acting as an interface to accept the electronic currency and convert it into a form that is accepted by the merchant.
Another solution provided by the electronic currency interface relates to shoppers that are able to purchase goods and services on the Internet, however at present over 60% cite an aversion to providing their credit card information to a shop on the Internet. Thus, there is a market need that this invention proposes to fill by providing the structure that allows customers not to release payment information along with the need of a method for individuals to be able to spend their electronic currency since it is not widely accepted or in use by merchants. For shoppers wanting anonymity and therefore do not want to provide either credit card information or shipping/delivery address, the electronic currency interface provides the solution by providing anonymity.
For electronic currency to gain acceptance, there must be such an interface or otherwise the majority of merchants/entities must begin to accept electronic currency directly as payment.
