Definitions
- This invention relates to a pad for facilitating the safe disposal of surgical instruments which have been used and which are sharp.
- the surgical instruments may be, for example, scalpel blades, syringe needles and stitching needles.
- a pad for facilitating the safe disposal of the surgical instruments comprises a base sheet, a sheet of a foam material secured to the base sheet, a layer of adhesive on part of the sheet of the foam material, and a peel-off protective sheet on the layer of adhesive.
- the pad is such that the used surgical instruments are able to be stuck, on the layer of adhesive after removal of the protective sheet.
- the pad is also such that it is foldable back on itself with the layer of adhesive retaining the pad in its folded condition, and the used surgical instruments then being safely inside the folded pad.
- the above mentioned known pad is well known for use in places such for example as operating theatres and hospital wards . Surgeons and/or nurses place unwanted used surgical instruments on the layer of adhesive . When the surgeons and/or nurses are finished,, the pad is simply folded and then discarded. In addition to being well known, the pad has been available for many years. A problem found by many persons that use the pad has been that the pad has a tendency to slip on any support surface on which it is placed during use. Unexpected slippage of the pad during use and whilst the pad is in its open condition is highly undesirable because it could lead to someone cutting themselves or cutting someone else with one of the used surgical instruments. This could in turn lead to persons being cut becoming infected, for example with the HIV virus, hepatitis A or hepatitis B, or any other contagious virus or disease.
- a pad for facilitating the safe disposal of surgical instruments which have been used and which are sharp which pad comprises a base sheet, a sheet of a foam material secured to the base sheet, a layer of adhesive on part of the sheet of the foam material, and a peel-off protective sheet on the layer of adhesive, the pad being such that the used surgical instruments are able to be stuck on the layer of adhesive after removal of the protective sheet, the pad also being such that it is foldable back on itself with the layer of adhesive retaining the pad in its folded condition and with the used surgical instruments then being safely inside the folded pad, and the pad being characterised in that it has securing means for releasably securing the pad in position on a support surface whereby the pad does not slip on the support surface during use.
- the use of the securing means enables the pad of the present invention to overcome a problem which has existed for many years with the known pad.
- the securing means retains the pad securely in position on the support surface. Because the securing means is a releasable securing means, the pad can be folded on the support surface and then simply removed from the support surface.
- the pad is one in which the securing means is positioned on a face of the base sheet remote from the sheet of foam material.
- the securing means is such that the pad is only secured over a relatively small area of the pad and such that the ends of the pad are not secured and are thus easily lifted for the folding.
- the securing means is an adhesive securing means .
- the adhesive securing means will usually be protected by a peel-off protective sheet.
- the adhesive securing means may be an a'dhesive strip or a plurality of separate adhesive areas. Any suitable and appropriate adhesive may be employed for the adhesive securing means .
- the adhesive will normally be one that is sufficient to hold the pad securely in position which at the same time enables the pad easily to be peeled off the support surface when required.
- the pad is not normally subjected to strong sliding forces and so a high-tack adhesive will not normally be required.
- a low tack adhesive will usually be more appropriate .
- Securing means other than an adhesive securing means may be employed.
- the securing means may be a magnetic securing means.
- the magnetic securing means may be a magnetic strip or a plurality of separate magnetic areas.
- the securing means may also be part of a securing means of the type in which interlocking plastics members are pushed together for securing purposes and are pulled apart for release purposes.
- a typical securing means of this type is the hook and loop securing means sold under the Registered Trade Mark VELCRO .
- the base sheet is provided with fold- assisting means.
- the fold-assisting means may be at least one crease line in the base sheet.
- Other types of crease-assisting means may be employed.
- the base sheet is made of a cardboard material . Any suitable and appropriate material may be employed for the base shee .
- the foam material is a closed cell foam material .
- An open cell foam material may however be used if desired.
- the foam material will usually be a plastics foam material, for example polyethylene. Generally, any suitable and appropriate type of foam material may be employed.
- the adhesive used for the layer of adhesive which receives surgical instruments will usually be stronger than the adhesive used to retain the pad in position. Any suitable and appropriate type of adhesive may be employed and the adhesive may be the same or different from the adhesive used in other parts of the pad.
- the protective sheet for the layer of adhesive is preferably a silicone covered protective sheet. Other types of protective sheet may be employed.
- the protective sheet for the layer of adhesive may be the same or different from the peel-off protective sheet used for the adhesive securing means .
- the sheet of foam material is preferably secured to the base sheet by a layer of adhesive .
- the same adhesive may be employed as in other parts of the pad, or a different type of adhesive may be employed.
- Other means of securing the sheet of foam material to the base sheet may be employed if desired.
- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a known pad
- Figure 2 is a perspective view like • Figure 1 but shows the pad in use and containing several used surgical instruments;
- Figure 3 shows the pad of Figure 2 in a folded condition and ready for removal from the support surface and disposal
- Figure 4 is an end view of the pad as shown in Figure 1;
- Figure 5 is a top plan view of the pad as shown in Figure 1 ;
- Figure 6 is an underneath plan view of the pad as shown in Figure 1; and Figures 7 - 12 are views of a pad of the present invention, the views corresponding to Figures 1 - 6 respectively of the known pad.
- a pad 2 for facilitating the safe disposal of surgical instruments 4 which have been used and which are sharp.
- the pad 2 comprises a base sheet 6 and a 'sheet 8 of a foam material secured to the base sheet 6.
- a layer 10 of an adhesive is provided on part of the sheet 8 of the foam material.
- a peel-off protective sheet 12 is provided on the layer 10 of adhesive.
- the pad 2 is such that the used surgical instruments 4 are able to be stuck on the layer 10 of adhesive after removal of the protective sheet 12.
- the pad 2 is also such that it is foldable back on itself as shown in Figure 3.
- the layer 10 of adhesive then retains the pad 2. in its folded condition.
- the adhesive in the layer 10 is a high tack adhesive. In the folded condition of the pad 2, the used surgical instruments 2 are then safely inside the folded pad 2.
- the support surface 14 may be any convenient and appropriate support surface in, for example, an operating theatre or a hospital ward.
- the support surface 14 may be a table top, the top of a floor mounted cupboard, or the top of a trolley.
- Figures 7 - 12 there is shown a pad 16 of the present invention.
- Figures 7 - 12 correspond respectively to Figures 1 - 6.
- Parts of the pad 16 that are the same as the corresponding parts in the pad 2 have been given the same reference numerals for ease of comparison and understanding.
- the pad 16 is provided with securing means 18 for releasably securing the pad 16 in position on the support surface 14.
- the use of the securing means 18 ensures that the pad 16 does not inadvertently slip on the support surface 14 during use .
- the securing means 18 is positioned on a face 20 of the base sheet 6 remote from the sheet 8 of the foam material .
- the securing means 18 is such that the pad 16 is only secured over a relatively small area of the pad 16 and such that the ends 22, 24 of the pad 16 are not secured and are thus easily lifted for the folding.
- the securing means 18 is an adhesive securing means 18.
- the adhesive used is a low tack adhesive.
- the securing means is protected by a peel-off protective sheet 26.
- the securing means 18 is in the form of a strip as shown.
- the base sheet is provided with fold-assisting means in the form of two crease lines 28, 30.
- the crease lines 28, 30 are spaced apart from each other as shown so as to form a spine 32 when the pads 2, 16 are folded.
- the base sheet 6 is made from a cardboard material .
- the foam for the layer 10 is a closed cell plastics foam.
- the closed cell plastics foam is a polyethylene foam.
- the protective sheet 12 is a silicone release sheet .
- a similar material may be utilised for the protective sheet 26 in the pad 16.
- the layer 10 of the foam material is secured to the base sheet 6 by a layer 34 of adhesive.
- the adhesive in the layer 34 may be the same as the adhesive in the layer 10. The adhesives may be sprayed into position during manufacture.
- the securing means 18 may be in the form of separate areas of adhesive rather than a single strip as- shown in Figure 7 - 12. Still further, the securing means 18 may be magnetic securing means instead of an adhesive securing means.
