The system comprises a location system which works at least with location units provided in the portable receiver devices (4).

Description

SIGNAL SYSTEM
The present invention relates to a signal system intended for use in a limited area or in a limited public event.
At present, it is not possible e.g. at downhill skiing centers to observe the movements and location of slalom skiers, and therefore no direct information about what happens on ski slopes and in surrounding areas during the day can be obtained.
The object of the invention is to achieve a local information channel e.g. for skiing centers, to be used for transmitting a program format prepared especially for skiing centers and their visitors, including bulletins about ski slope safety, information about local events and announcements and presentation of local service providers.
Another object of the present invention is to achieve a channel for internally transmitting announcements and information in connection with sports events and similar public events, e.g. competitions in which field announcements can- not be heard, e.g. in motor sports, or when no announcements are provided in remote areas (e.g. running, skiing and cycling competitions). This program format can be focused on giving competition coverage during the competition and on interviews and announcements and services associated with the competition event.
The signal system of the invention is characterized in that it comprises a transmitting station and receiver devices communicating with it, at least some of which are portable, a location system working with the receiver devices, and an alarm system in which at least the portable receiver devices function both as receivers and as alarm transmitters.
In detail, the features characteristic of the system of the invention are presented in the claims below. The services provide the advantage of fast real-time transmission of information to clients. Using the system of the invention, it is possible to considerably improve the safety and comfort of persons present within a limited area, e.g. slalom skiers, hunters and the like.
In the following, the invention will be described in detail by the aid of an example with reference to the attached drawings, wherein Fig. 1 presents a signal system according to the invention in a skiing center with a ski slope.
In the system, a transmitting station 2 equipped with local radio technology and a transmitting capability is built on the highest point on the ski slope 1. The amplifier power is as large as is required for the center and its ski track network. Slalom skiers 3 and other skiers are given or sold a simple earphone receiver, e.g. an UHF radio receiver whose frequency has been set to be the same as the frequency of the transmitting station of the center.
The transmitting station works as a ski slope radio which normally during the day transmits a radio broadcast, e.g. non-stop music, and if there are e.g. construction machines working on the slope or if anything extraordinary happens there, corresponding information is transmitted via the radio system to the people in the recreation area, who will thus be able to take the situation into account.
Likewise, the users can also hear e.g. weather reports, ski slope opening hours and after-ski tips via the radio system.
The center is also equipped with a location system which, using e.g. GPS technology, locates a skier in trouble (e.g. a victim 5 buried in snow in consequence of an avalanche) by means of the receiver 4 with an accuracy as good as 1 m. The person can send an alarm by means of his/her receiver either automatically, e.g. when the receiver 4 has remained motionless for a given length of time, or manually, whereupon relief (rescue squad 6, rescue helicopter 7, etc.) can be sent using a helicopter from a nearby rescue station 8. The costs of the system can be reduced by transmitting a commercial program which can be merged with a music program. A hotel 9 can be provided with a stationary receiver.
For the location system, the receiver 4 is provided with a location chip resistant to humidity, moderate heat, sunlight and frost. The chip has a memory where it can store information about the user, such as personal data etc. If the chip is lost, it can activate itself. The chip sends an alarm about its movements to desired targets, such as a rescue coordination center. By the aid of the chip, the movements of the object can be followed e.g. using a location program installed on a computer in the neighborhood, possibly together with a pre-installed map application in which the movements of the object can be easily observed. The object can be located in many circumstances, e.g. when buried in snow in the case of an avalanche.
The receiver 4 may be e.g. a palm computer provided with a display and with moving image, sound and subtitle properties integrated in it, so it can be used as a means to follow sports performances in real time. Via a touch-sensitive display, it is possible to select a general program or a desired competitor, whose performance can be monitored by a mini-camera installed on a motor car.
In addition, public address in sports competitions can be implemented via an UHF frequency to reach remote areas without cables. In this case, the public watching the competition is given earphone receivers or protectors with integrated radio receivers. The receivers may comprise a location function, which can be used to follow the movements of the public when necessary. Thus, e.g. in panic situations, the public can be guided individually to move in proper directions so as to avoid serious damage.
It is obvious to the person skilled in the art that different embodiments of the invention are not limited to the example described above, but that they may be varied within the scope of the claims presented below.
