Abstract
An automobile hood (20, 120, 620, 720, 820) including an exterior show surface (24, 124, 624, 724) and an interior surface (26, 126, 626, 726) facing away from the exterior show surface (24, 124, 624, 724). At least one expansible gas receiving chamber (30, 130, 230, 330, 430, 530, 630, 730) in fluid communication with an inflator (250, 350, 450, 550, 650, 750, 850) for generating inflation gas is disposed in underlying relation to the inteior surface (26, 126, 626, 726). The placement and expansive character of the gas receiving chamber (30, 130, 230, 330, 430, 530, 530, 730) is such that upon expansion of the gas receiving chamber (30, 130, 230, 330, 430, 530, 630, 730), the exterior show surface (24, 124, 624, 724) and the corresponding interior surface (26, 126, 626, 726) of the hood (20, 120, 620, 720, 820) are forced outwardly by the gas receiving chamber (30, 130, 230, 330, 430, 530, 630, 730). The forced movement gives rise to an extended surface profile thereby leading to enhanced impact energy absorption.
