Description

SHELF EDGE DISPLAY FITTINGS
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to shelf edge display fittings particularly but not exclusively to tongue and frame fittings for supporting products.
In shops, and larger stores such as supermarkets, products are often
promoted in conjunction with other products in what is usually referred to as cross
merchandising. For example, washing up liquid, the primary product, might be
promoted with a secondary product such as dish cloths or tea-towels. In some cases the secondary product may usually be found in a different section of the
store to the primary product and a display is needed to draw attention to the
connection and actively promote the secondary product. It is not unusual for the
secondary product to be relatively small compared to the primary product and not
best suited to display directly on the same shelf particularly where the eye is naturally drawn to the primary product in its usual place in the store. Likewise
the shopper may not be specifically or even actively searching for the secondary
product at all.
Tongue and frame fittings are adapted to be attached to a shelf edge and
extend therefrom to display packaged products, the packaging thereof is provided
with a slot (sometimes known as a Euro slot) therein by which the packaged
product can be located thereon and thereby hung on the tongue, or other such
elongate projection. A frame is usually provided, substantially co-planar with the tongue, to act as a guard principally to protect shoppers from potential injury
caused by the tongue or elongate support member as well as to prevent the
packaged products being accidentally knocked off the tongue, or the tongue itself being broken. In some instances the frame is used to carry labels and/or label holders where required.
For convenience this fitting will be hereinafter referred to as a tongue and frame fitting although it will be appreciated that the provision of a frame is not
essential to the invention nor is the precise construction of tongue. The tongue
may therefore be any convenient projection, such as a peg, hook, rod or the like,
of any convenient length and cross-section.
Existing fittings have an integrally formed pair of spaced members each having a rib adapted to locate one in each of a pair of opposing parallel channels
in a basic design of shelf edge. Such channels usually receive labels or label
holders, particularly but not exclusively for shelving systems common in the US.
Channels of this type have what is known as a 'C channel on the shelf edge and
is described in GB 2297 789A.
Various adapters have been proposed for use outside the US, such as that
described in GB 2 297 789A, which fit on the spaced members and which are
provided with means for subsequent attachment to other shelf edge designs.
Such adapters are not generally universal and often when fitted will cause
the shelf edge display fitting to project other than substantially in a plane co-
planar with the shelf. That is, the fittings are apt to be raked upwardly or angled downwardly away from the shelf edge at an angle incompatible with the desired display .
Furthermore users of such shelf edge display fittings, such as retailers,
prefer a fitting having a single component. A number of retailers operate a large number of stores or supermarkets which may have been acquired from other
groups through purchase or merger. A wide variety of shelf designs can thus be
found across just one retailers operation.
It is one object of the present invention to provide a more universal single
component shelf edge display fitting .
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to a first aspect of the present invention a shelf edge display
fitting comprises an elongate support member adapted to carry one or more
products to be displayed, means to attach the shelf edge display fitting to a shelf
edge, which shelf edge comprises an upper and a lower section, characterised in
that the means to attach the shelf edge display fitting to the shelf edge is formed
integrally with the shelf edge display fitting and comprises at least two opposed
channels adapted to engage opposing upper and lower sections of a shelf edge,
wherein at least one of said channels is so divided as to form at least two
substantially parallel channels to provide at least two alternative pairs of opposed
channels. It will be appreciated that the division of only one channel is required to provide such an arrangement.
The channels are so formed as to be capable of hooking part of an corresponding section of shelf edge between the side walls of the channel thereby
having the effect of gripping the shelf edge and thereby holding the shelf edge
display fitting firmly in place.
Most shelves are usually provided with a label holder of some type which
may be integral with or attached to the edge of the shelf and is conventionally of
the type which extends along all or substantially along all of the length of the
shelf edge. For clarity the term shelf edge will be used to denote either the edge
of a shelf and/or a label holder located at or along the edge of a shelf. Such label holders are usually angled to face slightly upwardly from the shelf edge and in
most embodiments are applied continuously, or substantially continuously along
the shelf edge. The angle of rake of label holders varies throughout the industry
and therefore a considerable degree of adjustability may be preferred.
The division of one channel into two parallel channels allows the simplest
degree of adjustability and, although either the upper channel or the lower channel
may be so divided , the lower channel is usually divided in such an arrangement.
In practice the division of a channel is provided by at least one dividing
wall or rib along all or part of the length of the channel, said wall, rib or ribs
acting with one or other of the channel walls to hook about part of the appropriate
section of shelf edge. The opposing channels extend from the shelf edge display fitting such
that they are appropriately spaced apart to receive the shelf edge therebetween.
Preferably the channels are connected to the shelf edge display fitting by an extension to one of the side walls of each channel, which extended side wall may be attached to each other along their lengths.
In one alternative embodiment at least the upper of lower of the channels
is formed in at least two separate lengths so that the opposed channels are
diametrically opposed such that at least one upper or lower channel is
diametrically opposed to at least two lower or upper channels. This arrangement may assist in fitting the shelf edge display fitting to a shelf edge as the usually
shorter channels may prove more flexible than a pair of longer channels.
Additionally it is a particular advantage in manufacturing the shelf edge display
fitting to arrange diametrically opposed channels so that none of the channels are obstructed thereby allowing ready access of tooling during injection moulding, for
example.
Any practical combination of channel division is possible to provide a
variety of upper to lower channel ratios, such as 1:2 ; 2:1 ; 2:2 ; 1:3 ; 2:3 ; 3:1
for example providing a number of different angles in each case, i.e. 2; 2; 4; 3; 6;
3. Each configuration provides at least two common angles of fit with, in some
cases up to a further 4 alternative angles.
According to a second aspect of the present invention a method of
supporting a shelf edge display fitting on a shelf edge comprises at least one pair of opposed detent means adapted to grip respective opposing parts of said shelf edge characterised in that at least one of said detent means has a plurality of
detent positions arranged so that the plane defined by the distance between the position of one of the at least one detent means and the position of at least one
opposed detent means can be substituted by at least one other plane between
opposing detent means whereby the angle of the particular plane in relation to the
shelf edge dictates the angle of presentation of the shelf edge display fitting in relation to said shelf edge.
Both said detent means may be provided with a plurality of detent
positions.
Any suitable configuration of opposing detent positions may be available
so as to provide a wide variety of angles of planar presentation of shelf edge
display fitting to the shelf edge.
According to a third aspect of the present invention of independent
significance a shelf edge display fitting comprises an elongate support member
adapted to carry one or more products to be displayed, means to attach the shelf
edge display fitting to a shelf edge, a frame substantially co-planar with the
elongate member and surrounding the area around said member and adapted to
receive tags or other label holders characterised in that the frame is provided with
at least one portion thereof of a different cross-section to that of the remainder of
the frame. The majority of tags or other label holders for attachment to display fittings of this type have at least one integrally formed inverted channel member
comprising a pair of converging sides depending from a connecting member and
adapted to clip over that part of the frame having, usually, a rectangular cross- section. In most embodiments this part of the fitting is the frame and it is a
disadvantage of the rectangular cross-section that whilst it provided a secure fit
with a number of label holders it cannot receive the many existing types of swing
tabs, or EPoS labels, of the type having a substantially cylindrical clip or other
attachment means and which are usually adapted to attach to a rod or bar-like member.. Custom swing tabs could be provided to fit a rectangular cross-section
but such a solution does not permit the use of existing swing tabs which may
already be in use in the store, and which the retailer will probably have in some
quantity. Preferably said different cross-section has a major focal length, e.g. diameter of a dimension less than the long side of the rectangular cross section.
Thus by providing a portion of frame of a different cross-section existing swing
tabs can be used alongside or, in the alternative, other label holders.
It will be apparent that any suitable cross-section may be used but
preferably one of a diameter less that the focal length or the length of the 'long
side' of the rectangular cross-section, such as a circular or cruciform or square
cross-section or even a rectangular cross-section having a reduced 'long side'.
It will be appreciated that such a portion or portions of frame will be
formed integrally with the main portion of the frame for the shelf edge display fitting which as stated elsewhere is made from injection moulded plastics. Adjustable tooling may be used to provide a variety if different portions at any
required position on the frame to suit any particular retailer's requirements.
The frame is a necessary requirement which can be formed with integral
labels/label holders but such a construction is not adaptable to the varied requirements of retailers.
It is common practise for the shelf edge display fitting to be securely
fitted to the shelf edge by forcing the spaced members apart and thus causing the
ribs to be pushed firmly into the channels. Usually this achieved by a screw
through a tapped hole in one member which screw is adapted to abut the other
member and as the screw is tightened against the other member the members are forced apart.
As will be seen by one skilled in the art, for this method to operate it is
preferable for the members to correctly line up, one above the other. However, in
order to assist in the manufacture of such shelf edge display fittings, by injection
moulding, for example, it has been proposed to split one of the spaced members in to two separate members diametrically opposed to, and one to each side of the
other spaced member. Thus access for the part of the tooling which forms the
single space member is provided between the spaced members. As will be
apparent the spaced members are no longer aligned as before and thus it is not
practical to use the screw method as described above on the non-aligned
members. According to a fifth aspect of the present invention of independent significance a shelf edge display fitting comprises an elongate support member
adapted to carry one or more products to be displayed, means to attach the shelf
edge display fitting to a shelf edge comprising at least two co-planar members
diametrically opposed to, and one to each side of at least one spaced member each
member having a rib adapted to locate in an appropriate channel of a pair of
opposing parallel channels in the shelf edge, characterised in that there is
provided bridge means adapted to join at least two co-planar members thereby to
provide a bridge section directly aligned with at least one spaced member, and means to adjust the spacing between the diametrically opposed members.
The means to adjust the spacing between the diametrically opposed
members may be provided by any convenient means, such as by screw means. In
one preferred embodiment a self-tapping screw is screwed through a through bore
in the member directly opposite the bridge section of the bridge, which screw
engages said bridge section and forces the opposed members apart as it is
tightened thereby securely locating the ribs in appropriate channels of the shelf
edge.
It will be readily apparent that where required a bore may be provided in the bridge means whereby continued tightening of the screw means will
alternatively bring the spaced members together. Such an arrangement would be
used where the members grip opposing sections of a shelf edge and need to be
tightly secured thereon. The bridge means may be a simple planar element adapted to be trapped against the separate members by screw pressure. Conveniently and in one
preferred embodiment the bridge means is provided with at least one channel
adapted to receive the separate members prior to fitting the shelf edge display
fitting to the shelf to ensure a more secure fit thereon.
Preferably each member is received in a separate channel on either side of
a solid bridge section in the bridge means against which the screw means abuts.
To allow for a relatively simple construction of bridge means and to
compensate for the planar difference between the ribs and the members, at least
one longitudinal rib may be provided on each member to allow the channel to be
of a dimension between its upper and lower sides to allow egress of the rib on each member and thereafter the longitudinal ribs support the upper sides of the
channels. Any convenient number of longitudinal ribs may be used
The bridge means may be made of any suitable material, preferably the
same material as the rest of the shelf edge display fitting, such as, conveniently,
injection moulded plastics.
In another alternative embodiment of the present invention the bridge
means is provided by a resilient elongate 'c' clip adapted to engage adjacent
separate members. Screw means of the type described above may be used, or
alternatively a self tapping screw may be inserted through a slot in one leg of the 'c' clip and screwed through a throughbore in the other leg of the 'c' clip to abut a
section of opposing member thereby to force the members apart as described. The resilient clip can thus be of a dimension to tightly embrace the separate members
but through its resilience can be forced over the ribs or preferably slid laterally
onto the members without the need to encounter the ribs. Thus the need for additional longitudinal ribs on the separate members is obviated.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
Referring to the embodiment illustrated in Figures 1 to 3 a shelf edge
display fitting 10 comprises an elongate support member 12 in the form of a
tongue having a central strengthening rib 14, means 16 to attach the shelf edge
display fitting 10 to the edge 18 of a shelf 20, which shelf edge 18 has an upper
section 22 and a lower section 24. The means 16 comprises upper and lower
opposed channels 26 and 28 adapted to engage upper and lower sections 22 and
24 respectively of the shelf edge. Channel 28 is divided along its length by a wall
30 to form two parallel channels 32 and 34. Displayed product 36 is hung on the elongate support member 12 by means of a slot 38 provided in the product packaging 40.
The channels 26, 32 and 34 are so formed as to be capable of hooking part of an appropriate section 22,24 of shelf edge 18 between the side walls 42 of the
channels thereby having the effect of gripping the shelf edge 18 and holding the shelf edge display fitting 10 firmly in place.
As can be seen in Figure 1, in which only part of the shelf/shelf edge is
shown, a shelf edge label holder 44 is attached to the shelf edge 18 and extends
along all or substantially all the length of the shelf edge.
The channels 26 and 28 are connected to the shelf edge display fitting by
an extension of one of the side walls 46 and 48 of each channel.
The shelf edge display fitting 10 is further provided with a frame 50 or
guard-rail which carries a label holder 52s seen in Figure 2 and having an
integrally formed inverted channel member 54 comprising a pair of converging
sides 56 and 58 depending from a connecting member 60 which clips over the
frame.
The shelf edge display fitting 10 is located on the shelf edge by first
engaging the channel 26 on the upper section 22 of the shelf edge 18 and then the
natural resilience in the plastics construction allows the channel 28 to engage the
lower section 24 of the shelf edge 18 as the means 16 flexes. The positioning of
the shelf edge display fitting 10 can be readily altered by engaging the appropriate
channel 32 or 34. Referring now to the embodiment shown in figures 4 to 6, which
correspond to Figures 1 to 3 but show only part of the shelf edge display fitting 10
together with the means 16 to attach the shelf edge display fitting to a shelf edge
(not shown), the shelf edge display fitting 10 again comprises an elongate support member 12 in the form of a tongue, having a central strengthening rib 14, and a
frame 50. The upper channel 26 is formed in two separate lengths 26a and 26b
above and to each side of a lower channel 28, which is reduced in length so the
channel lengths 26a and 26b do not overlie lower channel 28. As can be seen a space 62 is created between channel lengths 26a and 26b to allow ready access of
appropriate tooling (not shown) during manufacture by injection moulding.
Channels 26 and 28 may each be divided variously to provide different
combinations of channel division. Three different combinations are illustrated in
Figures 7 to 9 and show part of a shelf edge display fitting 10 including part of
the frame 50 and the means 16, and which provide respectively a variety of upper
to lower channel rations, 2:1 ; 1:3 ; 2:3 thereby providing a number of different
angles of connection in each case, i.e. 2 ; 4 ; 6 respectively.
In Figure 10 the arrangement of Figure 7 is attached to a raked shelf edge
label holder 64 itself attached to a shelf edge 66 of shelf 68. As can be seen the
angle of rake of the label holder 64 is compensated by engaging upper and lower
sections 70 and 72 of label holders 64 in diametrically opposed channels 76 and
78 of means 16. One of the usual label holders for attachment to the frame 50 is shown in
Figure 2 and described above. Swing tabs or EPoS labels cannot be fitted to a rectangular cross section such as is employed for the frame. In Figures 11 to 13 a
shelf edge display fitting 10 having the same general components of the
embodiments of Figure 1 described above, has, in this embodiment, a frame 50,
two sections 80 and 82 of which are of a circular cross-section, and one of which sections 80 carries a swing tag 84 having a label carrying portion 86 and a
cylindrical clip 88 attached to the frame section 80 so that the tag 84 can swing
freely. As can be seen the diameter of the sections 80 and 82 is less than the
length L of the long side of the rectangular cross-section of the main part of the
frame 50.
Figures 14 to 16 show alternative cross-sections for sections 80 and 82. In
Figures 14 a square or diamond cross-section 90 is shown. Figure 15 shows a
cruciform cross-section 92 whilst Figure 16 shows a rectangular cross-section 94
having a reduced length LL.
Referring to the embodiment illustrated in Figures 17 to 21 a shelf edge
display fitting 110 comprises an elongate support member 112 in the form of a
tongue and a frame 114, means to attach the shelf edge display fitting to a shelf
edge 116 (not shown in Figures 17, 19, 21) comprising a pair of co-planar separate
members 118a, 118b diametrically opposed to a single member 120, each of said members 118a, 118b and 120 has a rib 122 adapted to locate in an appropriate
channel 124 (see Figure 18 in particular) in the shelf edge 116. As can be seen in Figures 17 and 18 no convenient means is available to force the members
118a, 118b and 120 apart. Bridge means 126 shown in figures 19-21 and
connecting members 118a, 118b comprises a planar element having channels
128a, 128b therein to receive members 118a, 118b respectively and a solid bridge section 130 . Self tapping screw 132 through throughbore 134 in boss 136 in
member 120 abuts against bridge section 130 and thereby forces members
118a, 118b apart form member 120 and thus respective ribs 122 into channels 124.
As can be clearly seen in figures 19 and 20 the channels 128a,128b need to be of a dimension between upper side 138 and lower side 140 to allow the bridge
means to fitted over the ribs 122 on members 118a,118b. Longitudinal ribs
142a,142b are provided on the members 118a,118b respectively to support upper
side 138 of channels 128a,128b.
In use, the embodiment shown in Figures 19 to 21 and described above
can be fitted and removed quite readily. The bridge means 126 is slid on the
separate members 118a, 118b prior to attaching the fitting to a shelf edge, the
screw 132 can be slightly tightened to retain the bridge means 126 on the
members 118a,118b but not so tight as to prevent subsequent location of ribs 122 in channels 124. Subsequent to location of ribs the screw 132 may be further
tightened by any suitable driver.
The embodiment shown in Figure 22 may be fitted as before or subsequent
to location of ribs 122 in channels 124 and comprises a shelf edge display fitting
as before but with a bridge means comprising an extended resilient 'c' clip 142 which engages both members 118a, 118b, a self-tapping screw 144 passes through slot 146 in leg 148 of clip 142 and through throughbore 150 in leg 152 of clip 142
to abut section 154 of opposing member 120. As before subsequent tightening of
screw 144 forces opposed members 118a, 118b and 120 apart with the same
effect. This embodiment may again be made of any suitable material, such as
injection moulded plastics or in the alternative may be made from spring steel.
