Abstract

An emergency notification system (10) includes various terminals having emergency activation elements that when activated by a user sends an emergency notification over a packet-based data network to a central system, such as an emergency dispatch center (112). Upon activation of the emergency activation element, an emergency call is placed. Associated with the emergency call is the issuance of a message to enable identification of the location of the system so that the emergency dispatch center (112) can determine the location of the source of the emergency call. Upon receiving the activation request, a locator unit (104) communicates location information to the emergency dispatch center (112). As a result, a dispatcher at the emergency dispatch center (112) is notified of the emergency call and the location of the source of the emergency call so that the dispatcher is able to send emergency personnel to respond to the emergency call.
