Abstract

The present invention is an apparatus for developing a brain by using an audio-visual stimulus. The apparatus further includes, in comparison with a conventional audiovisual apparatus, means for downloading a program, a memory for storing the program downloaded, a signal generator including a LCD activator, light pulse generator, beat pulse generator, and a voice generator, and a microprocessor for control, Static or dynamic images generated by the LCD activator outputted through LCD formed in a main body, light pulses generated by the light pulses generator outputted through light goggles, and beat pulses generated by the beat pulse generator and a voice signal compounded by the voice generator outputted through an earphone.

Description

Apparatus for Developing Brain with Audio- Visual Stimulus
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to an apparatus for developing a brain. Particularly the present invention relates to an apparatus for inducing a brain wave of specific frequency by providing light pulses, voice comments and image stimulus, which are all adjusted to be suitable to a user's characteristics by inviting a new program from outside so that it can develop a brain and improve concentration and learning ability.
Background of the Invention
A brain wave is a current induced by activities of nerve cells, and an electrical signal measured by attaching electrodes to a surface of a human head. Brain waves are classified into alpha wave (below 4 Hz), theta wave (4 Hz ~ 8 Hz), and beta wave (8 Hz ~ 13 Hz) according to those frequencies. The beta wave is created during mental activity, the alpha wave during relaxation and meditation, and the theta wave in a more deeply relaxed and meditative state. Like above there is a definite correlation between a brain wave and a state of consciousness.
On the basis of the correlation, it has been known that the efficiencies of social activity of working men and learning of students are much more improved when the brain waves of them are in a specific state.
In 1839 H W Dove discovered a binaural beat phenomenon that sounds are perceived, when the two respective sounds of similar frequency are let heard respectively by two ears, as if they are created at an interior and central part of a brain because of the frequency difference. Through this phenomenon it became generally known that a specific brain wave could be created by sound stimulus. For example, the two sounds of low frequencies different each other by 10±2 Hz induce alpha wave of composed state. By use of dual binaural beats obtained by using two binaural beats, one can induce the same brain wave. Further it has -known that a stimulus by light pulses induces a certain brain wave. Accordingly, a variety of apparatuses for inducing artificially specific brain waves from humane brain waves are developed on the basis of above theory.
Conventional apparatuses for changing state of consciousness or inducing brain waves may be classified into three types.
Object of the invention
It is an object of the present invention to provide an apparatus for developing a brain that uses light pulses, sounds, and image stimuli. It is further an object of the present invention to provide an apparatus for developing a brain that can download a new program for developing brain and get upgrade.
It is further an object of the present invention to provide an apparatus for developing a brain that can cause change of state of consciousness
Summary of the Invention
The apparatus for developing a brain of the present invention comprises a means for downloading a program from an outside input means including at least a computer; a memory in which said downloaded program is stored; a key input means for choosing a program stored in the memory, including a choice key; a signal creator comprising an LCD activator for creating at least static image signals, a light pulse creator for creating light pulses with specified frequency, a beat signal creator for creating binaural beat signals, and voice creator for creating voice signals; an LCD for outputting the image signals; a light goggle for outputting the light pulses; an earphone for outputting the beat signals and said voice signals; and a microprocessor for controlling at least the means for downloading, the memory and the signal creator.

Brief Description of the Drawing
FIG. 1 is a constitutional view of an apparatus for developing a brain of the present invention.
Detailed Description of the Embodiment of the Invention
A constitutional view according to the present invention is schematically showed in Fig. 1. An apparatus according to the present invention comprises a main body 1, an earphone 3, and a light goggle 2. The main body 1 comprises an LCD 20 for representing static or dynamic images, an LCD activator 12 for activating the LCD, a light pulse creator 13 for creating light pulses and transmitting the light pulses to the light goggle, a beat signal creator 14 for creating beat signals, a voice creator 16 for creating voice signals, an amplifier 15 for amplifying and transmitting the beat signals transmitted by the beat signal creator and the voice signals transmitted by the voice creator to the earphone, a means for downloading a program from outside device 18, a memory 17 for storing the program transmitted from the memoiy, a microprocessor 11 for controlling operation of the main body, and key input means 19 for a user's handling the main body. Preferably the LCD activator, light pulse creator, beat signal creator, voice creator, and amplifier may be included in a signal creator 21. A user can turn on and off the apparatus according to the present invention by use of the key input means 19 installed in the main body 1. If the user chooses a program by use of a program choice key of the key input means 19 and pushes a start key, the program chosen by the user is executed for a predetermined time according to each program. In this case, time of execution, and beat sound and frequency of light pulse created are different according to a program chosen.
The program is stored in a Ferroelectric Random Access Memory (hereinafter referred to as a "FRAM"), the microprocessor 11 built in the main body 1 deciphers the program stored in the memory, and controls the apparatus to make beat sounds, light pulses, and images. Preferably one program is executed for about 10-60 minutes. More preferably the program is a program for developing a brain by improving a user's memory, concentration, and latent facilities, or a meditation program for relaxation, awakening, study assistance, sleep inducing, dementia prevention, and the like. A user may employ the apparatus of the present invention by choosing a program suitable to his physical characteristics and purpose of the use. The LCD activator 12 creates and transmits images according to the program to the LCD 20, which is means for representing the images. The LCD 20 induces a user to be sunk in meditation not by using the light goggle 2 but by use of images displayed on the LCD. The images may comprise static or dynamic images suitable for developing a brain.
The light pulse creator 13 creates and transmits electric signals to the light goggle 2, wherein the signals induce light diodes of the light goggle 2 to flicker according to a program. Light diodes are installed in the light goggle 2, and the light diodes may emit directly light pulses to a user's left and right eyes. Preferably the light diodes may be multi color LED's, which may change their own colors according to a program or in course of progress of the program. Strengths of the light pulses may be adjusted suitably by use of a light pulse's strength adjustment key of the key input means 19. A user may use stimulus of the light pulses with his eyes closed, and at this very moment strength of the light pulses may be adjusted so suitably that the user with his eyes closed can respond the stimulus. The beat signal creator 14 creates dual binaural beat electric signals under the control of the microprocessor 11. The electric signals are transmitted to the amplifier 15 and amplified to have enough strength to activate the earphone 3.
The earphone 3 receives the dual binaural beat electric signals and creates sounds so that the user can hear. The sounds created at right and left portions of the earphone 3 respectively may have the same or opposite(180° ) phases. The user experiences a binaural beat effect when the two sound signals are heard by the user's right and left ears respectively. For an example, the binaural beat signals of the sound may have tones of 400 Hz and 410 Hz respectively. In this case, one can know that the two frequencies of the sound are in the range of low frequency, and the difference of the two frequencies is in the range of alpha wave. An alpha or beta brain wave may also be induced by adjusting differences of the two frequencies.
By using a program in which the frequencies vary as time goes on, state of the user's consciousness changes gradually, for example awakening, relaxation, and awakening.
The voice creator 18 creates voice comments or natural sounds like the sound of running water and birds according to a program and voice data stored in the memory 17, and transmits them to the amplifier 15. The voice comments or the natural sounds transmitted to the amplifier 15 may be mixed with the binaural beat signals, and then transmitted to the user. Brain waves wanted can be induced more efficiently due to this mixing than by conventional simple binaural beat. Additional effect that the user does not feel bored due to the mixing, furthermore, can be obtained.
The means for downloading a program 18 has an interface through which the means for downloading a program 18 is connected to an outside device like a computer. Due to the interface a user can download a new program with the exception of the programs stored already in the memory. In the preferred embodiment, the means for downloading a program 18 has an interface to which a ROM-pack may be connected. And programs stored in the ROM-pack may be used. In the apparatus of the present invention the memory 17 is a FRAM on which new data can be written or ROM-packs instead of conventional ROM. The memory 17 is used in order to store a new program or to update an existing program. The programs in the description of the apparatus according to the present invention are things including beat signals, constructions and changes of programs, voice comments, and images displayed on a LCD.
The key input means 19 may include a beat tone adjustment key for varying beat tone, a light pulse adjustment key for varying strengths of light pulses, a program choice key for choosing a program of programs stored in the memory 17, a key for storing a new program or eliminate a program stored in the memory 17, a switch key for turning on and off the apparatus of the present invention, a key for adjusting the quality of beat tones, and so on.
In the apparatus of the present invention, the light pulses, the beat sounds, and image stimulus may be used respectively or in combination one another. Furthermore the voice creator 16 mix the beat signals with natural sounds and inducing comments so that a user may be trained gradually, for example, inducing relaxation state in the beginning, meditation state in the following, and then finishing state in the end.
The present invention can be easily carried out by an ordinary skilled person in the art. Many modifications and changes may be deemed to be within the scope of the present invention defined in the following claims.

Claims

What is claimed is:
1. An apparatus for developing a brain, comprising: a means for downloading a program from an outside input means including at least a computer; a memory in which said downloaded program is stored; a key input means for choosing a program stored in the memory, including a choice key; a signal creator comprising an LCD activator for creating at least static image signals, a light pulse creator for creating light pulses with specified frequency, a beat signal creator for creating binaural beat signals, and a voice creator for creating voice signals; an LCD for outputting the image signals; a light goggle for outputting the light pulses; an earphone for outputting the beat signals and voice signals; and a microprocessor for controlling at least the means for downloading a program, memory and signal creator.
2. An apparatus for developing a brain in claim 1, wherein said means for downloading a program further comprises an interface for ROM-pack.
3. An apparatus for developing brain in claim 1 , wherein said signal creator further comprises an amplifier for amplifying the beat signals created by the beat signal creator and said voice signals created by the voice creator.
4. An apparatus for developing a brain in claim 1, wherein said microprocessor controls at least one of the LCD activator, light pulse creator, beat signal creator, and voice creator according to a program chosen by the key input means.
5. An apparatus for developing a brain in claim 1, wherein said key input means further comprises a beat signal modulation key for varying magnitudes of the voice signals, a light pulse modulation key for varying strengths of the light pulses, and a memory key for updating or eliminating a program stored in the memory.
6. An apparatus for developing a brain in claim 5, wherein said light goggle is a multi-color light-emitting diode that may change the color of light.
7. An apparatus for developing a brain in claim 1, wherein said voice signals created by the voice creator are voice comments or natural sounds.
8. An apparatus for developing a brain in claim 5, wherein said amplifier mixes the beat signals created by the beat signal creator and the voice signals created by the voice creator, and then amplifies the result.
9. An apparatus for developing a brain in claim 1 , wherein said means for downloading a program, memory, key input means, signal creator, microprocessor, and LCD are installed in a main body.
