Abstract

An improved air filter (10) for removing and destroying harmful pathogens in the airstream of an HVAC system. The air filter (10) includes natural, synthetic or a combination of natural and synthetic fibers (12) woven to trap particulate matter. Interspersed in these fibers are microcapsules (16) containing a suitable biocide for disinfecting and/or deodorizing the exhaust air. The selected biocide is microencapsulated to provide a uniform diffusion rate of the biocide over the useful life of the filter (10). The method of preparing the microcapsules (16) for incorporation with the filter is disclosed using readily available broad spectrum disinfecting agents.
