Abstract

A method of data broadcasting for providing information about entertainers and products appeared in broadcasting programs on the air and a system for implementing the same method are disclosed. The system of data broadcasting based on electronic program guide (EPG) comprises a broadcasting information database storing the information related to the broadcasting programs, the entertainers and the products, and a data broadcasting server for transmitting searching results searched from the broadcasting information database and an application to display the searching results on a TV to the TV. Accordingly, information about the entertainers and the products appeared on the air program is provided to the broadcasting viewers.

Description

METHOD FOR DATA-BROADCASTING BASED ON ELECTRONIC PROGRAM
GUIDE, AND A SYSTEM FOR PERFORMING THE SAME
Technical Field
The present invention relates to a method of data broadcasting based on
electronic program guide (EPG) for providing broadcasting viewers with information
about products and popular television entertainers appeared in a broadcasting program
on the air and a system for implementing the same method.
Background of the invention
As a digital processing technology is improved, attention is focused on data
broadcasting which transmits airwave loaded digital signals to broadcasting viewers. By
the data broadcasting, a content provider or a broadcasting station can provide the
broadcasting viewers with electronic program guide (EPG) that includes schedule
information of programs on the air.
According to the data broadcasting technology, information about broadcasting
program schedule, information about popular television entertainers appeared in a
broadcasting program on the air, and information about products such as cloths, beds and
accessories used in a broadcasting program on the air can be displayed on TV. However, broadcasting stations have that kind of information insufficient or even never have that
infomiation. On the other hand, professional content providers or information providers
have sufficient infomiation about the entertainers and products. Further, the broadcasting
stations can't provide the viewers with the infomiation about products produced by a
specified company for its obligation to public benefit even if the stations have the
information about the products. Accordingly, that kind of information can be provided to
the viewers greatly relying on the content providers.
By the way, it is difficult that the content providers provide all kind of
infomiation at the same time to the viewers because memory capacity of a digital
broadcast receiver such as a set-top box or data transmission speed is limited. Further,
even if the content providers can provide the viewers with information about all popular
television entertainers at the same time by overcoming the limitation of hardware, the
information can not be complied or matched with the programs on the air, so that the
viewers can not be provided with their demanding infomiation at an optimum time.
Disclosure of the invention
Therefore, it is an object of the present invention to overcome the problems
discussed above, and there is provided a data broadcasting system based on electronic
program guide for providing information related to a broadcasting program, comprising a broadcasting information database for storing information of broadcasting programs
and information about entertainers and products appeared in the broadcasting programs;
and a data broadcasting server for searching the infomiation from the database and
transmitting an application to display searching results on a TV and the searching results.
In accordance with the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the
broadcasting infomiation database includes: a broadcasting program database for storing
playing time of each of the broadcasting programs, channels on which each of the
broadcasting programs is transmitted, contents of each of the broadcasting programs, list
of casts appeared in the broadcasting programs, and list of products used in the
broadcasting programs; an entertainment infomiation database storing information about
personal matters of the casts such as entertainers; and a product infomiation database for
storing infomiation about the products listed on the list of products.
In accordance with the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the data
broadcasting server comprises: a broadcasting program searching module for searching
broadcasting programs wliich are on the air out of the broadcasting programs at a
predetermined interval; an entertainment infomiation searching module for searching
infomiation about the entertainers appeared in the broadcasting programs searched by
the broadcasting program searching module from the entertainment infomiation
database; a product infomiation searching module for searching information about the products used in the broadcasting programs searched by the broadcasting program
searching module from the product infomiation database; and a data broadcasting
module for generating a carousel with the searching results acquired by the broadcasting
program searching module, the entertainment infomiation searching module and the
product infomiation searching module and an application to display the searching results
on the TV, and transmitting the carousel to broadcasting receivers.
In accordance with the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the
entertainment infomiation searching module classifies the information about the
entertainers who are ranked within a predetermined grade into gender and activity
field and sends the classified infomiation to the data broadcasting module.
In accordance with the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the
information about the entertainers is stored in the broadcasting program database with
identification code corresponding to entertainer's name.
In accordance with the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the data
broadcasting system further comprises a set-top box for displaying infomiation about
the broadcasting program which is being watched by the viewer to the TV, in response
to the viewer's demand.
In accordance with another embodiment of the present invention, there is
provided a method of data broadcasting using a data broadcasting system based on electronic program guide for providing information about broadcasting programs,
comprising the steps of: searching information about entertainers and products
appeared in the broadcasting programs; and transmitting searching results searched
during the searching information and an application to display the searching results on
a data broadcasting receiver of a viewer to the data broadcasting receiver.
In accordance with the embodiment of the present invention, the searching
infomiation includes: (a) a step of searching broadcasting programs at a
predetermined interval; and (b) a step of searching information about entertainers or
products appeared in the broadcasting programs searched during the step (a), and
wherein the transmitting searching results generates a carousel with the searching
results and the application and transmits the carousel.
In accordance with the embodiment of the present invention, the step (b)
includes a step of (bl) classifying the infomiation about the entertainers into gender
and their activity field.
In accordance with the further another embodiment of the present invention,
there is provided a computer readable storage medium such as a magnetic tape, a
magnetic disc, and/or an optical disc storing the methods of data broadcasting based
on EPG. Brief description of the drawings

Preferred embodiment of the present invention
The present invention provides a method of data broadcasting comprising
searching infomiation about entertainers appeared in the broadcasting programs on the
air and products used in the broadcasting programs on the air from a database storing the
same, and providing a TV with searching result along with an application. The present
invention further provides a system for implementing the same method.
Fig. 1 is a schematic block diagram showing a data broadcasting system based
on electronic program guide (EPG) in accordance with the prefeired embodiment of the
present invention..
As shown in Fig. 1, the data broadcasting system 100 comprises a broadcasting
infomiation database storing information about broadcasting programs, entertainers
appeared in each of the broadcasting programs and products used in each of the broadcasting programs, and a data broadcasting server 110 for searching the infonnation
from the database and for transmitting searching result and an application to display the
searching results on a TV to the TV set of viewers.
The broadcasting infonnation database comprises a broadcasting program
database 120 storing information relevant to the broadcasting programs to be on air, an
entertainment infonnation database 130 storing infomiation about personal matters of
entertainers, and a product infomiation database 140 storing information about the
products used in the programs.
The broadcasting program database 120 stores schedule information of the
broadcasting programs, broadcasting channels (broadcasting stations) conesponding to
the broadcasting programs, contents (summary) of the broadcasting programs, list of
entertainers appeared in the broadcasting programs and list of products used in the
broadcasting programs.
The entertainment infomiation database 130 stores the entertainer's name, field
of their activity, gender and et al. The product infomiation database 140 stores name of
the products, company name manufacturing the products and prices thereof.
The data broadcasting server 110 searches infomiation from the databases and
transmits the searching result infonnation to broadcasting receivers of the viewers.
The data broadcasting server 110 includes a broadcasting program searching module 112 for searching infomiation about the broadcasting programs to be broadcast
at a predetemiined interval from the broadcasting program database 120, an
entertainment infomiation searching module 114 for searching infonnation about
entertainers appeared in the broadcasting program searched by the broadcasting program
searching module 112 from the entertainment infomiation database 130, a product
infonnation searching module 116 for searching infomiation about products associated
with or used in the broadcasting program searched by the broadcasting program
searching module 112 from the product infomiation database 140, and a data
broadcasting module 118 for generating a carousel using the searching result infomiation
searched by the modules 112, 114 and 116 along with an application to be displayed on
the broadcasting receivers and transmitting the carousel to the receivers of the
broadcasting viewers.
The entertainment infomiation searching module 114 re-grades entertainers
popularity by considering appearance in the broadcasting programs and transmits the
infonnation about the entertainers who are ranked within a predetemiined grade to the
data broadcasting module 118 after classifying the infomiation of entertainers into
gender and into their activity field.
The data broadcasting system 100 in accordance with the preferred embodiment
of the present invention can further include a set-top box 300 that receives the broadcasting viewer's instruction to demand infonnation about the broadcasting
programs and transmits the broadcasting program infonnation to the TV in response to
the demand of the viewer. The set-top box 300 can be separately installed from the TV
or a TV set employing a digital broadcasting module is replaced with the set-top box.
A method of data broadcasting based on EPG is implemented using the data
broadcasting system 100 discussed above.
Fig. 2 is a flow chart for showing a method of data broadcasting based on EPG
in accordance with the preferred embodiment of the present invention.
As shown in Fig. 2, the method of data broadcasting based on EPG comprises a
step of searching a broadcasting program, infonnation about entertainers appeared in the
broadcasting program and infomiation about products used in the broadcasting program,
and a step of transmitting an application along with the searching result infomiation
acquired during the step of searching.
The step of searching includes (a) searching a broadcasting program at a
predetemiined interval (S400) and (b) searching infonnation about entertainers appeared
in the broadcasting program or infomiation about products used in the broadcasting
program (S410). The step of transmitting includes a step of generating a carousel for
data broadcasting using the searching result infonnation searched during the steps (a)
and (b) and an application to be displayed along with the searching results on the TV (430) and a step of transmitting the carousel.
The step (b) further includes a step of (bl) classifying the infomiation about the
entertainers who are ranked within in a predetemiined grade into field of their activity
and into gender (S420).
The method of data broadcasting discussed above may be stored in a computer
readable storage medium such as a magnetic tape, a magnetic disc, or an optical disc and
can be implemented by a computer.
A method for providing the infonnation about the entertainers and products
using the data broadcasting system in accordance with the present invention will be
discussed below in detail by reference to drawing 1 to 8.
First, referring to Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, the broadcasting program searching module
112 searches infonnation about a broadcasting program at predetemiined interval from
the broadcasting program database 120(S400). The searching result infonnation
searched by the broadcasting program searching module 112 is output in a format of
electronic file and transferred to the data broadcasting module 118.
For example, the infomiation about the broadcasting programs is stored in the
broadcasting program database 120 as shown in table 1. The broadcasting program
searching module 112 searches infomiation about the broadcasting programs at intervals
of one minute from the broadcasting program database 120. Assuming it is 1 :20 a.m., the programs 1000, 1001 and 1002 are retrieved from the broadcasting program database
120 as the searching result infonnation of the broadcasting program searching module
112. The searching result infonnation is presented in table 3.

In table 1 , list of the products used in the programs is omitted in the sake for
convenience of explanation. However, the list of products should be included in the broadcasting program database 120.
The entertainment infonnation searching module 114 searches information
about entertainers appeared in the broadcasting program searched by the broadcasting
program searching module 112 from the entertainment infonnation database 130(S410).
An example of the infomiation about the entertainers stored in the entertainment
infomiation database 130 is indicated in table 2.

When the entertainers 100, 101, 102 are appeared in the broadcasting program
1000, Seo In-seok, Lee Ji-hyun, Lee Yongae are retrieved from the entertainment
infonnation database 130. When a broadcasting viewer selects one of the retrieved
entertainers above using the set-top box, infomiation about the selected entertainer is displayed on the TV of the viewers as shown in Fig 4.
The grade in populaiity is updated at a regular interval by an infonnation
provider or a content provider who is providing that infonnation on an Internet website.
The entertainment information searching module 114 classifies the entertainers who are
ranked within a predetennined grade into activity field such as actor, singer, and gagman
or into gender (S420) and transfened the classified infonnation to the data broadcasting
module 118 in a format of a electronic file. Fig. 5 is an exemplary page frame for
displaying the entertainer's popularity grade infomiation classified into gender of mail.
Fig. 6 is an exemplary page frame for displaying the entertainer's popularity grade
infomiation classified in the activity field.
As shown in Fig. 6, when the entertainer's names are displayed on the TV of the
viewer, names of the entertainers only appeared on the broadcasting program on the air
are displayed, so that the viewers can easily and quickly find and acquire their
demanding infomiation.
The product information searching module 116 searches the products associated
with or used in the broadcasting program searched by the broadcasting program module
112 from the product information database 140, outputs the searching result in an
electronic file and sends the same to the data broadcasting module 118(S410).
The data broadcasting program module 118 generates a carousel using an application to be displayed in the data broadcasting receiver of the viewers and the
searching result infomiation searched by the searching modules 112, 114, 116 and sends
the carousel to a stream generator 210 (S430). The searching result infonnation and the
application is transfoπned to stream signals by the stream generator 210 and transmitted
to the data broadcasting receiver via a data broadcasting apparatus 220 and a satellite
antenna 230.
Signals received by an antenna of the data broadcasting receiver such as a set-up
box 300 is processed in the set-box 300 so that the viewers can watch the broadcasting
program on a TV screen.
When the viewer wants to know about entertainers and products appeared in the
broadcasting program during watching the TV, the viewer changes the broadcasting
channel to a data broadcasting channel (for example to channel no. 800) and demands
the infonnation via the set-box 300 using for example a remote controller or the like.
When the set-top box 300 receives an instruction to change the broadcasting
channel to the data broadcasting channel (channel no. 800) from the viewer, the set-top
box 300 first records the broadcasting channel that is being watched by the viewer right
before the viewer changes the channel to the channel no. 800 and displays the
broadcasting program infomiation being played on the recorded channel on the TV 310.
That is, in case that the viewer has watched a broadcasting program on channel no. 6 and then changes the chamiel 6 to channel 800 to acquire an broadcasting program
infomiation, the set-top box 300 transmits the broadcasting program information on the
channel no. 6 to the TV 310 as shown in Fig. 7.
In case the set-top box 300 can not recall the channel which is being watched by
the viewer right before changing the channel, or the viewer demands the information
during watching a program on the channel no. 800, broadcasting program information
such as program list of the broadcasting programs on the air on every channels at that
time is displayed on the TV 310 as shown in Fig. 3.
W en the viewer selects an entertainer or a product from the broadcasting
program infonnation displayed on the TV 310, infomiation about the selected entertainer
or the selected product is displayed on the TV 310 as shown in Fig. 4. In case, no
infomiation about the selected entertainer or the selected product is stored in the
databases, a message "no information" is displayed on the TV 310.
Fig. 8 shows an exemplary page frame displaying the message "no infomiation"
when the searching modules can not search the information demanded by the viewer.
In the page frame shown in Fig. 5, one of the broadcasting programs is selected,
the set-top box 300 transmits the selected broadcasting program to the TV 310, so that
the viewer can easily selects the broadcasting program that he or she wants to watch.
As discussed above, the present invention can provide the broadcasting viewers with infonnation about broadcasting programs, entertainers and products appeared in
broadcasting programs on the air.
Further, the present invention provides selective information about entertainers
only appeared in the broadcasting programs on the air using EPG to the viewers instead
of providing infonnation about all entertainers, so that infonnation providers or
broadcasting stations can provide the infomiation that the viewers wants to acquire
without depending on limitation of the hardware such as memory capacity of the data
broadcasting receiver or the data transmission rate.
According to the present invention, the viewers can be provided with affluent
infomiation about broadcasting programs and can easily finds and selects a broadcasting
program in wliich favor entertainers are appeared.
Further, the broadcasting station does not need to additionally construct
databases storing infonnation about entertainers and products. Still further, the present
invention has an advantage of rising rating (viewership) of broadcasting programs in
which popular entertainers are appeared.
Still further, the present invention is of benefit to common carrier such as the
Korean Digital Satellite Broadcasting Company, the benefit that subscribers and the
rating (viewership) are increased because the affluent infonnation about the broadcasting
programs, popular entertainers and products used in the programs can be provided to the viewers.
Further, the contents or infomiation provider benefits from the present invention
because advertising revenue and product sales revenue are increased as the viewership is
increased due to the affluent information.
For the entertainers and products manufacturers, the present invention is of
benefit to them too because distinction thereof is raised.
The present invention is not limited to the prefeired embodiment discussed
above, and it will be understood by those skilled in the art that the foregoing and other
changes in foim and details may be made therein without departing from the spirit and
scope of the invention.

Claims

What is claimed is:
1. A data broadcasting system based on electronic program guide for providing
infonnation related to a broadcasting program, comprising:
a broadcasting information database for storing information of broadcasting
programs and infonnation about entertainers and products appeared in the broadcasting
programs; and
a data broadcasting server for searching the infonnation from the database and
transmitting an application to display searching results on a TV and the searching results.
2. The data broadcasting system according to claim 1, wherein the broadcasting
infonnation database includes:
a broadcasting program database for storing playing time of each of the
broadcasting programs, chaimels on which each of the broadcasting programs is
transmitted, contents of each of the broadcasting programs, list of casts appeared in the
broadcasting programs, and list of products used in the broadcasting programs;
an entertainment infonnation database for storing information about personal
matters of the casts such as entertainers; and
a product infomiation database for storing infomiation about the products listed
on the list of products.
3. The data broadcasting system according to claim 2, wherein the data
broadcasting server comprises:
a broadcasting program searching module for searching broadcasting programs
which are on the air from the broadcasting program database at a predetermined
interval;
an entertaimnent infomiation searching module for searching information about
the entertainers appeared in the broadcasting programs searched by the broadcasting
program searching module from the entertaimnent infonnation database;
a product infomiation searching module for searching infomiation about the
products used in the broadcasting programs searched by the broadcasting program
searching module from the product infonnation database; and
a data broadcasting module for generating a carousel with the searching results
acquired by the broadcasting program searching module, the entertaimnent
infomiation searching module and the product infonnation searching module and an
application to display the searching results on the TV, and transmitting the carousel to
broadcasting receivers.
4. The data broadcasting system according to claim 3, wherein the entertainment
infomiation searching module classifies the infomiation about the entertainers who are ranked within a predetennined grade into gender and activity field and sends the
classified infomiation to the data broadcasting module.
5. The data broadcasting system according to claim 2, wherein the infomiation
about the entertainers is stored in the broadcasting program database with
identification code conesponding to entertainer's name.
6. The data broadcasting system according to claim 1, further comprising a set-
top box for displaying infomiation related to the broadcasting program which is being
watched by the viewer to the TV, in response to the viewer's demand.
7. A method of data broadcasting using a data broadcasting system based on
electronic program guide for providing information related to broadcasting programs,
comprising the steps of:
searching infonnation about entertainers and products appeared in the
broadcasting programs; and
transmitting searching results searched during the searching information and an
application to display the searching results on a data broadcasting receiver of a viewer
to the data broadcasting receiver.
8. The method according to claim 7, wherein the searching information
includes:
(a) a step of searching broadcasting programs at a predetennined interval; and
(b) a step of searching infomiation about entertainers or products appeared in
the broadcasting programs searched during the step (a),
and wherein the transmitting searching results generates a carousel with the
searching results and the application and transmits the carousel.
9. The method according to claim 8, wherein the step (b) includes a step of (bl)
classifying the infomiation about the entertainers into gender and their activity field.
10. A computer readable storage medium storing the methods according to
claim 7 to claim 9.
