Abstract

A method (P1-P5) includes determining, by a processor (20) within a peripheral device (14), that an amount of a consumable associated with the peripheral device (14) has decreased below a predetermined thresold and transmitting an email from the peripheral device (14) to order additional supplies of the consumable.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS

1. A method (P1 -P5) comprising: determining, by a processor (20) within a peripheral device (14), that an amount of a consumable associated with the peripheral device (14) has decreased below a predetermined threshold; and transmitting an email from the peripheral device (14) to order additional supplies of the consumable, the transmitting includes transmitting the email to a personal computer (12) associated with the peripheral device (14), and further including transmitting a second email from the personal computer (12) to a vendor web site across a firewall (19), wherein the personal computer (12) and the peripheral device (14) communicate using an object-oriented request reply protocol.
4. The method (P1 -P5) of claim 1 , wherein the peripheral device (14) comprises a hard copy output engine (14) and determining comprises determining when a toner level in the hard copy output engine (14) has decreased below a toner low threshold.
5. A computer implemented control system for a hard copy output engine (14), the system comprising: memory (24) configured to store a software module; and processing circuitry (20) configured to employ a software module to: determine that an amount of a consumable associated with a peripheral device (14) has decreased below a predetermined threshold; and transmit an email from the peripheral device (14) to order additional supplies of the consumable, the transmit step includes transmitting the email to a personal computer (12) associated with the peripheral device (14), and transmitting a second email from the personal computer (12) to a vendor web site across a firewall (19), wherein the personal computer (12) and the peripheral device (14) communicate using an object-oriented request reply protocol.
6. The computer implemented control system of claim 5, wherein the processing circuitry (20) is further configured to employ the software module to: 17
determine that an amount of a consumable associated with the peripheral device (14) has decreased below a predetermined threshold; and transmit an email from the peripheral device (14) to order additional supplies of the consumable.

The computer implemented control system of claim 5, wherein the peripheral device (14) comprises a hard copy output engine (14) and wherein the processing circuitry (20) and memory (24) together comprise an embedded web server (26), and the embedded web server (26) is further configured to: determine when a toner level in the hard copy output engine (14) has decreased below a toner low threshold; and transmit an email across a firewall (19) to a vendor web site to order additional toner in response to determining.

The computer implemented control system of claim 5, wherein the peripheral device (14) comprises a hard copy output engine (14) and wherein the processing circuitry (20) and memory together comprise an embedded web server (26), and the embedded web server (26) is further configured to transmit the email to a personal computer (12) associated with the peripheral device (14) for retransmission from the personal computer (12) to a vendor web site across a firewall (19).
9. The computer implemented control system of claim 5, wherein the peripheral device (14) is chosen from a group consisting of: facsimile machines, photocopiers and printers and wherein the processing circuitry (20) and memory (24) together comprise an embedded web server (26).

The computer implemented control system of claim 5, wherein the processing circuitry (20) is further configured to employ the software module to: determine when a predetermined work threshold has been reached; and transmit an email to request periodic service in response to reaching the predetermined work threshold. 18
11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the object-oriented request reply protocol is configured to document requests from the peripheral device (14) and replies received from external devices configured to communicate with the peripheral device (14).
12. The method of 1 1 , wherein the object-oriented protocol comprises printer management language (PML).
13. The method of claim 12, wherein the PML is used within the peripheral device (14).
14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the firewall is configured to permit select external devices to communicate with the peripheral device (14).
15. The method of claim 14, wherein the select external devices configured to communicate with the peripheral device (14) are identified in a list as authorized to communicate with the peripheral device (14), wherein the list is stored in a memory of the peripheral device (14).
16. The method of claim 15, wherein the processing circuitry (20) and the memory (24) together comprise an embedded web server (26), and the embedded web server (26) is configured to manage the peripheral device (14).
17. The method of claim 16, wherein the embedded web server (26) is configured to provide an interface to the peripheral device (14) from one or more external devices communicating with the peripheral devices.

The method of claim 16, wherein the peripheral device (14) comprises a hard copy output engine and the embedded server (26) is configured to: determine when a toner level in the hard copy output engine has decreased below a toner low threshold; and transmit an email across the firewall to the vendor website to order additional toner in response to the determine step. 19
19. The control system of claim 5, wherein the object-oriented request reply protocol is configured to document requests from the peripheral device (14) and replies received from external devices configured to communicate with the peripheral device (14).
20. The control system of claim 19, wherein the object-oriented protocol comprises printer management language (PML).
21. The control system of claim 20, wherein the PML is used within the peripheral device.
22. The control system of claim '5, wherein the firewall is configured to permit select external devices to communicate with the peripheral device (14).
23. The control system of claim 22, wherein the select external devices configured to communicate with the peripheral device are identified in a list as authorized to communicate with the peripheral device, and further wherein the list is stored in a memory of the peripheral device (14).
