Abstract

An orthopedic stabilization structure including a threaded fastener (60) capable of articulation to accommodate various skeletal geometries, a rod (136), and a cup (24) supporting said threaded fastener and said rod (136) to be subsequently held in a fixed position with respect to the skeletal structure.

Claims
I Claim:
Claim 1 - An orthopedic device, comprising, in combination: a threaded shaft said shaft having one terminus provided with rotational means about a single axis transverse to a long axis of said threaded shaft and means to prohibit all other rotation, a cup having an upper end with interior threads and having a lower rotational means receiving area dimensioned to allow rotation of said threaded shaft about said one terminus and about a single axis transverse to a long axis of said threaded shaft and means to prohibit all other rotation, said cup having a transverse slot, a rod passing through said slot and abutting said rotational means in proximate tangential registry, and bolt means threaded to said cup's interior threads to fix said rod and said threaded shaft into a fixed position relative to said cup.
Claim 2 - The device of claim 1 wherein said threaded shaft has first and second thread patterns thereon.
Claim 3 - A method for supporting a skeletal structure, the steps including: deploying a plurality of fasteners within a plurality of support cups; screwing the fasteners into a bone to be mended such that the bone is subjected to both axially compressive and radially inward forces relative to the fastener; deploying a support rod within the support cups; orienting the cups relative to the rod so the rod abuts the fasteners; and fixing the rod and fasteners together by inducing a radially inward force on the cups.
Claim 4 - The device of claim 2 wherein said threaded shaft first and second thread patterns have differing thread pitch, such that said second thread pattern has finer threads than said first thread pattern.
Claim 5 - The device of claim 4 wherein said thread patterns have crests which are axially offset from their respective roots, inducing a radially inward directed force.
Claim 6 - The device of claim 5 wherein said first and second thread crests face each other inducing compressive force axially.
Claim 7 - An orthopedic device, comprising, in combination: a fastener having a threaded body and a top portion provided with a saddle; said saddle having an upper face and a- an uninterrupted lower face; said upper face contoured to receive a cylindrical rod thereon; said upper surface is in tangential registry with approximately one half a circumference of said rod; and said lower face including a seating area for reception within a cup whereby shoulders of said fastener are in tangential registry with and can articulate within said cup-, said cup having a seat complemental to said shoulders, and said cup having upwardly projecting inwardly threaded free ends provided with angle threads, and a bolt having angled threads disposed within said cup threads to provide radially inward forces to obviate the need for a collar.
Claim 8 - An orthopedic fastener, comprising in combination: a bone engaging shaft having a first thread pattern at one end and a second thread pattern at another end, one said thread pattern being bone engaging and having means to draw radially inward bone within which it is embedded.
Claim 9 - A method for deploying an orthopedic fastener into a bone, the steps including inserting the fastener into the bone to induce axial compressive forces and radially inwardly directed forces with respect to the fastener.
Claim 10 - An orthopedic device, comprising, in combination: a support rod; a plurality of fastener supports attached to said support rod; and a plurality of fasteners coupled with said plurality of fastener supports, wherein said fasteners include a threaded body and means to mate with said fastener supports in a fixed orientation, wherein subsequent movement of said fasteners is prevented by the interaction of said fastener supports and said means to mate with said fastener supports.
Claim 11 - An orthopedic device, comprising, in combination: a clamp having means to receive and secure a support member and means to mate with and secure a fastener, said fastener having a threaded body and complemental means to mate with and be secured by said clamp, and wherein said fastener includes means to mate with said clamp in a finite number of orientations. Claim 12 - An orthopedic device, comprising, in combination: a clamp having means to receive and secure a first support member and means to receive a second support member, wherein said second support member
14 includes a support cup containing a fastener and means to allow rotational movement of said fastener in said support cup.
Claim 13 - An orthopedic device, comprising, in combination: a clamp having means to receive a support member and means to mate with a fastener, wherein said means to mate with said fastener includes a split shaft, wherein said split shaft is an extension of said means to receive a support member, said fastener having a threaded body and complemental means to mate with said clamp, and wherein said fastener includes means to mate with said clamp in a finite number of orientations; and securing means, said securing means mating with said fastener to secure said support member in said clamp and to secure said fastener to said clamp by means of compression of said split shaft.
Claim 14 - The fastener of claim 8 wherein said thread patterns include a sharpened crest having a major diameter and a root defining a minor diameter, said threads having an upper surface extending from a bottom edge of said root to said sharpened crest and a lower surface extending from a top edge of said root to said sharpened crest, said surfaces angle to a medial portion of said fastener.
Claim 15 - The fastener of claim 14 wherein said upper surface defines a lower angle of inclination than said lower surface.
Claim 16 - An orthopedic stabilization device, comprising, in combination: a threaded shaft having both axial and radial bone engaging compressive threads, said shaft having a free end terminating in a disc constrained within a cup having a recess complemental to said disc to permit relative rotation of said cup and said shaft about a geometrical center of said disc, a rod received within said cup and a tangential registry with said disc, and means to hold said rod, cup and disc in fixed relationship. Claim 17 - An orthopedic stabilization device, comprising in combination: a cup having a recess for receiving a threaded shaft, said cup recess and said shaft including means to permit shaft rotation only in one plane, said cup having an interior thread on a portion of said recess which is not addressing said threaded shaft, said interior thread having a thread pattern complemental to a bolt such that when said bolt is threadly engaged in said interior thread and said bolt reaches its limit of travel, a radially inward force is applied to said interior thread.
15 Claim 18 - The device of claim 17 wherein said bolt includes a stem projecting away from said cup, said stem operatively coupled to a clamp with means to adjust the position of said clamp along said stem, and a rod adjustably disposed within said clamp. Claim 19 - The device of claim 17 wherein said threaded shaft includes two thread patterns similar to said bolt and interior thread, said two thread patterns facing each other and one having a finer pitch than the other.
Claim 20 -. The device of claim 18 wherein said threaded shaft includes two thread patterns similar to said bolt and interior thread, said two thread patterns facing each other and one having a finer pitch than the other.
Claim 21 - An orthopedic stabilization device, comprising in combination: a cup having a recess for receiving a threaded shaft having a saddle residing in said cup, said cup recess and said shaft including seating means to permit shaft rotation only in one plane, said cup having an interior thread on a portion of said recess which is not addressing said threaded shaft, said interior thread having a thread pattern complemental to a bolt such that when said bolt is threadly engaged in said interior thread and said bolt reaches its limit of travel, a radially inward force is applied to said interior thread. Claim 22 - The device of claim 21 including: a rod adjustably disposed within said cup seated in said saddle. Claim 23 - The device of claim 21 wherein said threaded shaft includes two thread patterns similar to said bolt and interior thread, said two thread patterns facing each other and one having a finer pitch than the other.
Claim 24 - The device of claim 22 when said threaded shaft includes two thread patterns similar to said bolt and interior thread, said two thread patterns facing each other and one having a finer pitch than the other.
Claim 25 - An orthopedic stabilization device, comprising, in combination: a threaded shaft having both axial and radial bone engaging compressive threads, said shaft having a free end terminating in a saddle constrained within a cup having a recess complemental to said saddle to permit relative rotation of said cup and said shaft about a geometrical center of said saddle, a rod received within said cup and a tangential registry with said saddle, and means to hold said rod, cup and saddle in fixed relationship. Claim 26 - An orthopedic device, comprising, in combination:
16 a threaded shaft said shaft having one terminus provided with rotational means about a single axis transverse to a long axis of said threaded shaft and means to prohibit all other rotation, said threaded shaft further having radially inward force drawing means on threads which engage bone, a cup having an upper end with interior threads and having a lower rotational means receiving area dimensioned to allow rotation of said threaded shaft about said one terminus and about a single axis transverse to a long axis of said threaded shaft and means to prohibit all other rotation, said cup having a transverse slot, a rod passing through said slot and abutting said rotational means in proximate tangential registry, and bolt means threaded to said cup's interior threads to fix said rod and said threaded shaft into a fixed position relative to said cup.
Claim 27 - An orthopedic stabilization device, comprising in combination: a cup having a recess for receiving a bone engaging threaded shaft having bone engaging threads inducing a radial inward force, said cup recess and said shaft including means to permit shaft rotation only in one plane, said cup having an interior thread on a portion of said recess which is not addressing said threaded shaft, said interior thread having a thread pattern complemental to a bolt such that when said bolt is threadly engaged in said interior thread and said bolt reaches its limit of travel, a radially inward force is applied to said interior thread.
Claim 28 - The device of claim 27 wherein said threaded shaft includes two thread patterns similar to said bolt and interior thread, said two thread patterns facing each other and one having a finer pitch than the other.
Claim 29 - An orthopedic stabilization device, comprising, in combination: a threaded shaft having both axial and radial bone engaging compressive threads, said shaft having a free end terminating in a disc constrained within a cup having a recess complemental to said disc to permit relative rotation of said cup and said shaft about a single axis of rotation defined by a geometrical center of said disc, a rod received within said cup and a tangential registry with said disc, and means to hold said rod, cup and disc in fixed relationship.
