Description

System network of communicating electronic devices
The invention relates to a system network of communicating electronic devices comprising at least a first portable electronic device comprising battery means, processing means, memory means, display means, data input means and radio-frequency data signal processing means for receiving and transmitting data signals from and to at least a second electromc device comprising processing means, memory means, display means, data input means and radio-frequency data signal processing means, wherein suitable software schedule programs are stored in said memory means in both electronic devices so as to be processed by said corresponding processing means, and wherein radio-frequency data signal processing means of both devices are used for exchanging different scheduling entries of said schedule programs.
System networks, for example, computer networks are commonly known; therein several computers are linked together by means of a cable network for communication purposes, for example, exchanging data, etc. etc. Wireless networks wherein several electronic devices are linked together in a wireless fashion and communicate with each other by means of a wireless communication protocol, for example, Blue Tooth protocol are also known.
When working in such system or computer network users may use several electronic devices linked in said network at the same time; for example, a user can have a computer at his work office and carry a laptop or a personal digital assistant (PDA) when out of the office.
In order to maintain correct information which is up to date in both electronic devices of the same user, the user can transmit all new data contained in his portable electronic device (word processing files, appointments, etc. etc.), via the network, to his computer, whilst his portable device is updated by receiving all kinds of information from the system network, for example, e-mail and facsimile messages as well as appointments made by colleagues.
Such a known system network is, for example, disclosed in the abstract of the Chinese Patent Publication No. CN-A-1226038. Although such known system networks enable users to keep their information contained in several electronic devices up to date, conflicts can arise when all kinds of information present in both electronic devices of the same user have a different content. Such situations can arise in relation to information such as addresses and telephone numbers of clients, and more particularly in the event that the correct content of such information is replaced by the wrong content once the devices communicate with each other and are updated via said system network.
It is an object of the present invention to avoid situations where different information or scheduling entries between different electronic devices present in the same system network are exchanged, and correct or the most recent information is accidentally changed or overwritten with older, out of date or incorrect information. According to the invention the system network of communicating electronic devices is, therefore, characterized in that means are present for analyzing the different exchanged scheduling entries in both electronic devices and for displaying possible conflicts between said scheduling entries to the user.
The presence of means which analyze the exchanged information or scheduling entries and display possible conflicts in case the contents of the same information differs between the two devices eliminates the risk of loss of correct information and replacement of information by the wrong or incorrect content.
It is a further feature of the means for use in a system network according to the invention that said means resolve said conflicts by assigning a higher priority level to one of said conflicting scheduling entries. The assignment of priority levels to different kinds of conflicting information or scheduling entries can be set in advance by the user or the user can change or correct the displayed and/or resolved conflicting scheduling entries by means of said data input means at the time that they are presented to the user.
Although the system network according to the invention gives the user the opportunity to correct or change the relevant conflicting scheduling entries at his own volition said correction step can be carried out automatically whilst according to the invention said means overwrite the scheduling entry having the lowest priority level having the scheduling entry with the highest priority level.
A further automation of the system network according to the invention is obtained when said analyzing, displaying and correcting of said conflicting scheduling entries is performed once said first portable electronic device is within a pre-determined distance from said second electronic device.
In a specific embodiment said means can be present in said second device, which may be a TV set. According to the invention said scheduling entries can concern broadcasting program information, whilst all data signals are transmitted in a wireless fashion, for example, by means of infra-red signals.
The invention shall now be further explained by means of a drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 shows a specific embodiment of the system network according to the invention,
Fig. 1 shows a simplified embodiment of a system network according to the invention. For mere illustrative purposes said system network consists of two electronic devices, being a portable electronic device 1 and a second electronic device 2. The first portable electronic device can be a so-called laptop computer or a personal digital assistant (PDA), whilst the second electronic device can be in this embodiment a TV set. It will be appreciated that all kinds of electronic devices can be incorporated in the system network according to the invention; not only computers but also mobile telephones etc. can be used as electronic devices.
Both electronic devices comprise processing means (3a, 3b), memory means (4a, 4b), display means (5a, 5b), data input means (6a, 6b) as well as radio-frequency data signal processing means (7a, 7b) for receiving and transmitting data signals (9) between the electronic devices 1 and 2.
Whilst the electronic device 2 can have an ordinary power supply by means of a mains cable (220 Volts AC), the portable electronic device 1 can be provided with (rechargeable) battery means 8 (not depicted). Whilst the data input device 6a can be a well known keyboard, the data input means 6b of the TV set 2 can be a remote control or keys or buttons present on the front of the TV set 2.
Standard TV sets may contain a so-called electronic programming guide (EPG) or a Video Text-based information system which may contain all kinds of information concerning broadcast programs, but also all kinds of information relating to entertainment, business, sports, etc. Some of this scheduled information is date or time based and reminds the user of the beginning of certain broadcast programs or other date or time-related events. In order to keep the user up-to-date with said information, both devices 1 and 2 are linked in the system network such that they exchange information or schedule entries, via the radio-frequency data signal processing means (7a, 7b), by means of wireless signals, for example, infra-red signals. In order to avoid that the correct content of a specific information item or a specific scheduling entry is unduly replaced by the incorrect content of the same information contained in the other electronic device, means 11 are provided in the system network so as to analyze the different exchanged schedule entries in both electronic devices and display possible conflicts between said scheduling entries to the user. In fact said means 11 compare the content of the same scheduling entries from both the portable device 1 and the TV set 2 and in the event that both contents are not the same, said means display such conflicting scheduling entries to the user. In this embodiment said means 11 are present in the TV set 2 and display any conflicting scheduling entries on the TV screen 5b. The processing means 11 are incorporated in the TV set 2 so as not to burden the battery, processing and memory means of the portable electronic device 1.
According to the invention the means 11 not only display conflicts in scheduling entries to the user, but they can also resolve said conflicts by assigning a higher priority level to one of said conflicting scheduling entries. The assignment of priority levels to each of the conflicting scheduling entries can be based on rules developed by the user in advance, so that the means 11 can resolve such conflicts using said rules. An example of the resolving of conflicting scheduling entries by the means 11 is, for example, the replacement or overwriting of the scheduling entry with the lowest priority level with the scheduling entry with the highest priority level. However, the user can also change or correct the displayed and/or resolved conflicting scheduling entries by means of the data input means (6a, 6b). The user can thus avoid personally that information of a scheduling entry contained in one of the electronic devices is unduly replaced by wrong information of the same scheduling entry contained in the other electronic device. Although the user can activate the means 11 on its own volition at the moment that the exchange and synchronization of the scheduling entries contained in both electronic devices is necessary, said analyzing, displaying and correcting of said conflicting scheduling entries can also be performed once said first portable electronic device 1 is within a predetermined distance from said second electronic device 2. In another embodiment said analyzing, displaying and correcting of said conflicting scheduling entries can be performed between more than two electronic devices, and be based, for example, on the assignment of priority levels by the means 11.
The data signals 9 can be transmitted in a wireless fashion between the electronic devices 1 and 2 for example by means of infra-red signals. The transmission of the data signals via a specific communication protocol, for example, Blue Tooth, can also be carried out in the system network according to the invention.
It will be appreciated that the example as disclosed in the accompanying drawing is not limitative and is given merely for a proper understanding of the present invention. The portable electronic device 1 can also be incorporated in a system network consisting of several computers or other kinds of electronic devices, like mobile telephones, PDAs, etc.
