Abstract

Device for reflecting light at variable intensity, the device (100) including a variable polarizer (102) for applying a selected polarization to incoming light (110), a reflector (106) and an optical phase shifter (104), located between the variable polarizer and the reflector, wherein the optical phase shifter together with the reflector, shift the relative phase between two linearly polarized components of the incoming light (114) which exits the variable polarizer, from a first direction to a second direction, thereby directing phase shifted light (120) toward the variable polarizer, and wherein the variable polarizer applies the selected polarization to the phase shifted light. An alternative embodiment is a device for transmitting light at variable intensity comprising front and rear variable polarizers. A variable polarizer for use in these devices is also disclosed.
