Abstract

Fabrication Process for an Optical MEMS Device for Fiber Alignment and Variable Optical Attenuation. According to one embodiment of the present invention, a method is provided for fabricating a variable optical attenuator. The method comprises forming a groove on a surface of a substrate for positioning an optical microstructure at least partially in the groove. Furthermore, the method comprises forming an overlayer structure interconnected to the substrate and extending at least partially over the groove for maintaining an optical microstructure in place against the groove. The method also comprises forming a micro-electro-mechanical mechanism on the substrate wherein the microelectro-mechanical mechanism is movable for intercepting light from the optical microstructure
