Abstract

A universal cable and system are provided that includes a universal cable and miniature quick connectors with interchangeable ends. The system allows for easy construction of various desired cable configurations that may include USB and Firewire(R) computer architecture, and other electrical communication wiring schemes. As a result, electrical connection between computers, computer peripherals, and other electrical equipment is quickly accomplished without a need for many cables and connectors, and their associated added costs. Universal cabling methods for using the system and cables are also provided.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS[received by the International Bureau on 26 January 2004 (26.01.04); original claims 1-29 replaced by amended claims 1-23 (5 pages)]WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:
1. A universal cable comprising: a universal cable portion having a first end and a second end electrically connected; and a universal cable connector portion attached to said second end and electrically connected to said first end through said cable, portion and further comprising: a connector body; and at least six pins disposed within said connector body and electrically connected to said second end.
2. The universal cable according to claim 1 including a connector shelf disposed in said connector body dividing said at least six pins into two rows of three pins each.
3. The universal cable according to claim 1 wherein said at least six pins are female p is.
4. The universal cable according to claim 1 wherein said at least six pins are male pins.
5. The universal cable according to claim 1 including a quick connect mating connector portion releasably engaging said universal cable connector portion and electrically connecting with at least four of said at least six pins, said quick connect mating connector portion and said universal cable connector portion forming a universal cable connector.

The universal cable according to claim 5 including a converter having a quick connect housing with said quick connect mating connector portion disposed therein, and an electrical connector portion disposed in said quick connect housing and electrically connected to at least four of said at least six pins through said quick connect mating connector, said electrical connector portion having a different pin arrangement than a pin arrangement of said quick connect mating connector portion.

7. The universal cable according to claim 6 wherein said electrical connector portion is one of a Firewire 4-circuit plug, a Firewire 6-circuit plug, a 4-pin USB Series "A" receptacle, a 4-pin USB Series "A" plug, a 4-pin USB Series "B" plug, a 5-ρin USB Mini "A" plug and a 4-pin USB Mini "B" plug.
8. The universal cable according to claim 5 including a converter having a quick connect housing, an electrical connector portion disposed in said quick connect housing, and a quick connect cable portion connecting said electrical connector portion to said quick connect mating connector and connected to said and electrically connected to at least four of said at least six pins through, said electrical connector portion having a different pin arrangement than a pin arrangement of said quick connect mating connector portion.
9. The universal cable according to claim 1 including an electronic device connected to said universal cable portion first end.
10. A universal cable comprising: a universal cable portion having a first end and a second end electrically connected; a first universal cable connector portion attached to and electrically connected to said first end; and a second universal cable connector portion attached to and electrically connected to said second end, each of said first and second universal cable connector portions including a connector body and at least six pins disposed within said connector body and electrically connected to said respective first and second ends.
11. The universal cable according to claim 10 including a connector shelf disposed in each said connector body dividing said at least six pins into two rows of three pins each.
12. The universal cable according to claim 10 including first and second quick connect mating connector portions each releasably engaging a respective one of said first and second universal cable connector portions and electrically connecting with said at least six pins, said first and second quick connect mating connector portions and said first and second universal cable connector portions forming a pair of universal cable connectors.
13. A universal cable system comprising: a universal cable portion having a first end and a second end electrically 0 connected; a universal cable connector portion attached to and electrically connected to said second end, said universal cable connector portion including a connector body and at least six pins disposed within said connector body and electrically connected to said second end; 5 a quick connect mating connector portion releasably engaging said universal cable connector portion and electrically connecting with at least four of said at least six pins; and a converter having a quick connect housing with an electrical connector portion disposed therein and electrically connected to at least four of said at least 0 six pins through said quick connect mating connector, said electrical connector portion having a different pin arrangement than a pin airangement of said quick connect mating connector portion.
14. The universal cable system according to claim 13 wherein said electrical 5 connector portion is one of a Firewire 4-circuit plug, a Firewire 6-circuit plug, a 4-pin
USB Series "A" receptacle, a 4-pin USB Series "A" plug, a 4-pin USB Series "B" plug, a 5-pin USB Mini "A" plug and a 4-pin USB Mini "B" plug.
15. The universal cable system according to claim 13 wherein said quick connect o mating connector portion is disposed in said housing.

16. The universal cable system according to claim 13 wherein said quick connect mating connector portion is connected to said electrical connector portion by a quick connect cable portion.
17. The universal cable system according to claim 13 including an electronic device connected to said universal cable portion first end.
18. The universal cable system according to claim 13 further comprising: another universal cable connector portion attached to and electrically connected to said first end, said another universal cable connector portion including a connector body and at least six pins disposed within said connector body and electrically connected to said first end; another quick connect mating connector portion releasably engaging said another universal cable connector portion and electrically connecting with at least four of said at least six pins; and another converter having a quick connect housing with another electrical connector portion disposed therein and electrically connected to at least four of said at least six pins through said another quick connect mating connector, said another electrical connector portion having a different pin airangement than a pin arrangement of said another quick connect mating connector portion.
19. A universal converter for connecting an electronic device to a cable comprising: a quick connect mating connector portion adapted to releasably engage and electrically connect with a universal cable connector portion of a universal cable and having at least four pins; a quick connect housing; and an electrical connector portion disposed in said quick connect housing and electrically connected to said at least four pins, said electrical connector portion having a different pin arrangement than a pin arrangement of said quick connect mating connector portion.

The universal converter according to claim 19 wherein said electrical connector portion is one of a Firewire 4-circuit plug, a Firewire 6-circuit plug, a 4-pin USB Series "A" receptacle, a 4-pin USB Series "A" plug, a 4-pin USB Series "B" plug, a 5-pin USB Mini "A" plug and a 4-pin USB Mini "B" plug.
21. The universal converter according to claim 19 wherein said quick connect mating connector portion is disposed in said quick connect housing.
22. The universal converter according to claim 19 wherein said quick connect mating connector portion is connected to said electrical connector portion by a quick connect cable portion.
23. The universal converter according to claim 19 wherein said at least four pins are male pins.
