Description

APPARATUS FOR DISPENSING TOOTHPASTE
The present invention relates to an apparatus for dispensing a paste, such as toothpaste or other more or less pasty substances such aε glue, mastic and cosmetic substances, comprising a housing, a channel which is located in the housing and extends from an inlet opening to an outlet opening, and pressure means coupled to the channel.
Such an apparatus is known from the Netherlands patent l 008 955 of applicant. he known apparatus makes use of two supply chambers which are arranged in the channel and which are closed by two respective ball valves that are under spring action. A problem in the known apparatus is the rapid wear of the components, including the ball valves, by abrasive present in the paste. This problem occurs particularly in the case of toothpaste. A further problem is the solid structure of the paste, whereby the paste remains adhered to the apparatus during use thereof.
.-It is an object of the present invention to obviate the above stated problems and to provide an improved apparatus for dispensing paste wi'τrh»-"lι&& -wea .
A further object of the invention is to provide an apparatus wherein during use of the apparatus the paste drops from the apparatus at a desired moment due to the force of gravity.
The invention provides for this purpose an apparatus for dispensing (tooth) aste, comprising:
- a housing;
- an inlet opening arranged in the housing; - an outlet opening arranged in the housing;
- a channel which is connected at one outer end to the inlet opening and which is connected at the other outer end to the outlet opening; - dispensing means coupled to the channel for creating an underpressure at the inlet opening.
Such an apparatus has a better resistance to wear, since the paste is situated in the channel and the parts susceptible to wear are located outside the channel. Operation of the dispensing means results in an underpressure at the inlet opening, so that a tube or container with (tooth)paste is emptied more completely and efficiently than by hand, so that the apparatus also has a cost-saving effect. The volume of a tube also decreases due to the underpressure, so that the consumption status is visible.
In a preferred embodiment the dispensing means comprise ; - a body arranged rotatably about a shaft in the housing;
- two or more rollers arranged on the body concentrically and for rotation on their longitudinal axis, wherein at least one of the rollers of the dispensing means presses sealingly against the channel.
With such a construction an underpressure can be developed in effective manner at the inlet opening by operating the dispensing means, wherein the paste is drawn from the inlet opening and pressed to the outlet opening.
In a preferred embodiment the apparatus comprises a conically formed inlet piece coupled to the inlet opening. A tube with the (tooth) aste therein is placed on the inlet piece. Because the inlet piece is formed conically, the apparatus is suitable for different tubes or containers with different openings. In a further preferred embodiment a membrane of flexible plastic is arranged in the outlet opening, in which membrane a slit-like opening is arranged.
Since the' membrane is flexible, the slit-like opening opens easily under pressure of the (tooth) aste, whereby it can exit through the opening. By moving back the dispensing means the plastic of the membrane will move back and close the siit-like opening, wherein the (tooth)paste which has come out is severed so that it drops from the apparatus owing to the force of gravity. In a preferred embodiment the membrane is of siliσone rubber, polyure hane, teflon or a combination of these materials.
The use of these materials reduces the adhesion, whereby no (tooth)paste is left behind on the membrane in the outlet opening, ' which is more hygienic.
In a further preferred embodiment the dispensing means comprise at least one knob which is arranged outside the housing and connected to the shaft of the body.
The peristaltic movement is caused by operating th knob, whereby the (tooth) aste leaves the apparatus. By arranging a second knob, wherein one knob is arranged on the right-hand side of the housing and a second knob is arranged on the left-hand side of the housing, the apparatus is suitable for a left-handed as well as a right-handed user.
In one embodiment a motor is coupled to the shaft of the body. The dispensing means are hereby motor- operated and the apparatus is likewise suitable for the disable .
In a further embodiment the apparatus comprises a mounting mechanism arranged on the housing. The apparatus can hereby be fixed to a wall- and easily removed therefrom, for instance to clean the apparatus, which is hygienic.
Further advantages and features of the invention will be described with reference to the annexed figures, in which:
- Fig. 1 is a perspective and partly cut-away view of the apparatus according to the invention in a first preferred embodiment;
- Fig. 2A is a perspective view of the channel and the dispensing means according to the invention in a first preferred embodiment;
- Fig. 2B is a perspective view of the outlet opening with the e ra e.
An apparatus 1 for dispensing (tooth)paste is for instance arranged on a wall 2 so that it can be operated easily (fig. 1), but can also be embodied as hand model. Apparatus 1 comprises a housing 4, which consists of a left-hand part 6 with side part 12 and a right-hand part 10 with upper part 8. Said parts are connected, for instance with screws 14, to other parts of the housing and to further elements of apparatus 1. Arranged on the top side of the housing is an inlet opening 16 having thereon a conically tapering inlet part 18. Because inlet part 18 is coniσally tapering, a tube 20 with (tooth)paste therein having a random opening can be pushed onto the conical inlet part 18, wherein a satisfactory fit is obtained. A differently formed inlet part can be mounted for tubes with a different shape or size of opening. On the underside of the housing is arranged an outlet opening which is connected to an interchangeable nozzle 22. On a right-hand side of the housing is arranged a round turning knob 24 with which dispensing means, which are described with reference to fig. 2, are operated in the housing. On a left-hand side of the housing can optionally be arranged a second turning knob which likewise engages on the dispensing means, whereby the apparatus l is suitable for both a left-handed and a right-handed user. In the housing there is further arranged a channel which consists of a hose 26 of silicone rubber and which connects the inlet opening IS to the outlet opening, so that (tooth) paste from tube 20 is guided via hose 26 to nozzle 22 (Fig. 1, 2A) . Wot shown is a mounting mechanism consisting of a plate fixed to wall 2 and, fitting thereto, a coupling part on the housing. Apparatus 1 can thus be easily detached from the wall so that it can for instance be cleaned under a tap or taken away without being disassembled. A refillable closed container (not shown) can also be arranged instead of a tube, for instance in accordance with a bellows principle, whereby consumption status can be more readily monitored.
Dispensing means consist of round plates 28, 29 which are arranged rotatably on a shaft 30. Rollers 32, for instance four thereof (fig. 2A) , are arranged on the plates for rotation on their' shaft 34. Coupling pieces 36, 38 couple the channel to respectively the inlet and the outlet opening.
During use of apparatus 1, a user turns the knob 24, which is coupled with a coupling mechanism 40 to shaft 30, in the direction of the arrow (fig. 2A) , wherein one or more rollers press aealingly against hose 26 and roll therealong, thus creating underpressure at the inlet opening, and (tooth) paste is drawn with a peristaltic movement out of tube 20 and pressed to the outlet opening. Owing to the pressure there opens a slit-like opening 42 in an elastic material 44, such as polyurethane, silicone rubber, teflon or a combination of these materials, which is arranged in nozzle 22 (fig. 2B) . When sufficient (tooth) paste 28. has been pressed out of opening 42, a user can turn the knob in opposite direction to the arrow, wherein opening 42 closes and severs the (tooth) aste so that it dropB downward due to the force of gravity. The material 44 herein remains practically free of (tooth)paste, which is hygienic The apparatus according to the invention is therefore suitable for automatic dispensing of (tooth) aste from a tube of random dimensions, wherein a tube can be emptied more completely than by hand, wherein a variable dispensing is possible and wherein the outlet opening is fouled little, so that the apparatus is hygienic.
The above described preferred embodiment serves only by way of example and diverse modifications thereof are possible. The scope of protection is defined by the appended claims.
