Definitions
- the invention generally relates to molded or cast products and more particularly to a molded product adapted for use as housewares, furniture, architectural components or the like preferentially made from coarse wood particles, flakes, chips, or any other suitable castable particulate materials such as glass, dried grass, plastic, shell particles or a combination thereof.
- the present invention provides a molded coarse particle product preferentially made from wood flakes, chips or bits which is adapted for use as housewares, furniture, architectural components or articles such as decorative tiles, ornamental vases, garden accessories or the like.
- the invention includes a molded product comprised of coarse particles, preferentially wood bits, flakes, strands or chips, admixed and bonded together with an adhesive binder and lightly cold pressed into a mold preferably manually, together with a reinforcing means in a form of permeable sheet element such as wire mesh, textile, fabric, fiberglass mat or gauze-like materials, being integrally interposed and embedded therein.
- Another object thereof is to provide a molded coarse particle product for use as housewares, furniture, architectural components or the like that is provided with a reinforcing means, giving it the needed structural strength and durability for its intended applications, say, an ornamental vase, chair or table components, decorative wall covering or facing, etc.
- Still another object thereof is to provide a molded coarse particle product for use as housewares, furniture, architectural components or the like that is very economical and most practical to manufacture as it only utilizes indigenous materials and simple technology or craftsmanship.
- Fig. 1 is a cut-away plan view of a preferred embodiment of the invention
- Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view thereof taken along line 2-2 of Fig. 1 ;
- Fig. 2a is an enlarged inset view thereof taken from Fig. 2;
- Fig. 3 is a cut-away plan view of another embodiment of the invention;
- Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view thereof taken along line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
- Fig. 5 is a cut-away plan view of still another embodiment of the invention.
- Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view thereof taken along line 6-6 of Fig. 5;
- Figs. 7 to 9 are perspective views of illustrative examples of possible applications of the present invention.
- Fig. 1 a preferred embodiment of a molded coarse particle product for use as housewares, furniture, insulation, architectural components or the like generally designated by reference numeral 10 comprising coarse particles 11 , preferentially wood bits, flakes or chips, shredded wood, mulch, organic leftover or waste materials 1a, e.g.
- the particles 11 that are of random irregular sizes can be in forms of flakes, chips, fragments, pellets, bits, strands or combination thereof of any suitable materials such as wood, glass, plastic, shell, metal, dried grass, organic leftover (leaves, twigs or bark) or waste materials, e.g. rice hulls, coconut husks, fruit coverings/peels, vegetable and seeds, etc., the admixture thereof with the binder 12 being applied into a mold (not shown) that can be of any desired shapes or forms with light pressing pressure, preferably manually for small to medium- size volume of production, and preferably automatically by mechanized process for large-size production level such as the use of injection molding or any suitable molding processes so known.
- any suitable materials such as wood, glass, plastic, shell, metal, dried grass, organic leftover (leaves, twigs or bark) or waste materials, e.g. rice hulls, coconut husks, fruit coverings/peels, vegetable and seeds, etc.
- the binder 12 is preferably water-based or resin- based.
- the surface texture 14 of the product 10 has the natural or original characteristics, that is, in terms of profile, contour, appearance, color and any inherent properties, of the particles 11 comprising thereof such that it looks as natural as the particles 11 when viewed collectively together in plurality, and the quality and degree of roughness being defined by the natural features of the same particles 11.
- the surface texture 14 may be ground resulting in a product having flattened surface with smoothened or relatively rough finish which may be varnished as desired and have toughness as a result of grinding.
- Such product characteristics are illustrated in another embodiments of the invention shown in Figs. 3 to 6. Figs.
- FIG. 3 and 4 show the molded particle product generally designated by reference numeral 10a that utilizes particles 11b in a form of dried grass strands 15a cut into small pieces.
- Figs. 5 and 6 show the molded particle product generally designated by reference numeral 10b that uses particles 11c in a form of a needle-like wood chips 15b. Both these other embodiments are molded in the same manner as the preferred embodiment shown in Fig. 1.
- the invention can have various applications as houseware articles such ornamental vases 16 and 17 or utility item holder 18 shown in Figs. 7 to 9, chair or table components, decorative wall covering or facing, etc. (not shown).
- the invention is preferably adopted in combination with other components 19 made of different materials such as metal frame 20, cast stone base 21, complementary part 22 or any other desired elements or structures.
- the product is preferably treated as normally or conventionally adopted in the handicraft industry especially for wooden articles to protect it against material damage due to environmental adversities such as temperature changes, improper handling, damage caused by insects, etc.
- the product is also preferably provided in part or in its entirety with a finishing, protecting or enclosing layer in forms of dye, varnish, coating, paint which can either be alcohol-based, water-based or oil-based, or any suitable finishing materials preferred.
- the particles 11 may also be pre-treated and pre-coated by dyeing, coating, or painting using any suitable protecting and finishing materials as above-mentioned such as dye, varnish, coating and paint to provide surface protection and to obtain a variation in appearance and design of the product.
