Abstract

High-speed hitless switches (10, 12) for directing optical beams are provided. These switches may use semiconductor-based materials whose refraction and absorption characteristics are modified by applying a voltage. The induced changes in these characteristics allow an optical signal to be directed from one branch to another without the loss of any signal data. These switching devices (10, 12) may be cascaded in a Mach-Zehnder configuration with each switch residing in the coupling area of the Mach-Zehnder configuration. The use of a multi-section switching device may also be performed so that certain optical losses can be reduced and better tuning can be achieved. A capacitive phase shifter (19) in the pi shift region of a Mach-Zehnder configuration may also be used to remove certain frequency dependencies.
