Description

TITLE: DISPOSABLE FILTER CARTRIDGE FOR ESPRESSO COFFEE MACHINES
DESCRIPTION
Background and summary of the invention The present invention relates to a disposable filter cartridge for espresso coffee machines.
As is known, different types of disposable filter cartridges, inserts or capsules exist for espresso coffee machines. These filter cartridges comprise a generally cylindrical body for containing the coffee powder, which is closed on the filling side by a first filter and on the side for discharging the coffee infusion by a second filter. These filter cartridges are contained inside suitable filter-holder elements provided in the espresso coffee machine. The hot water under pressure produced by these machines therefore passes through the filter cartridge and by flowing over the coffee powder produces, through suitable nozzles formed in the filter holder, the coffee infusion.
The coffee infusion obtained by means of these known filter cartridges is, however, not of optimum quality, in particular if the user wishes to obtain, by means of their own espresso coffee machine, a particularly creamy coffee infusion.
The object of the present invention is therefore to provide a disposable filter cartridge for espresso coffee machines which enables a coffee infusion which is particularly creamy to be obtained in a simple and low-cost manner using any espresso coffee machine.
This object is achieved by the present invention by means of a disposable filter cartridge for espresso coffee machines, comprising a body for containing the coffee powder, provided on the side where the coffee powder is introduced with a first filter and on the side where the coffee infusion is discharged with a second filter, characterized in that this body for containing the coffee powder comprises, on the side where the coffee infusion is discharged, a part which is dome-shaped or rounded with a decreasing cross-section and is able to restrict the flow cross-section of the coffee infusion; this dome-shaped or rounded part is provided, downstream of this second filter, with one or more holes for discharging the coffee infusion. Brief description of the drawings
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will be better understood from the following description considered by way of a non-limiting example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
- Fig. 1 shows a perspective view, from above, of a first embodiment of a disposable filter cartridge according to the present invention, comprising an upper filter with a circular form;
- Fig. 2 shows a perspective view, from below, of the filter cartridge according to Fig. 1 ;
- Fig. 3 shows a side elevation and cross-sectional view of the filter cartridge according to Fig. 1 and Fig. 2;
- Fig. 4 shows a perspective view, from above, of a first variation of embodiment of the filter cartridge according to Fig. 1 , comprising an upper filter having a square or rectangular shape;
- Fig. 5 shows a perspective view, from above, of a second variation of embodiment of the filter cartridge according to Fig. 1 , comprising an upper filter with a triangular shape;
- Fig. 6 shows a side elevation and cross-sectional view of a second embodiment of a disposable filter cartridge according to the present invention; and
Fig. 7 shows a partial view, from below, of the filter cartridge according to Fig. 6. Description of the preferred embodiments of the invention
With reference to the accompanying drawings and in particular Fig. 1 , 1 denotes the body of a disposable filter cartridge for espresso coffee machines according to the present invention. This body 1 has a substantially cylindrical form and is shaped so as to have a dome-shaped part 101 with a decreasing flow cross- section, on the side where the coffee infusion is discharged, and a projecting edge 201 with a circular shape, on the side where filling with the coffee powder 2 is performed (see Fig. 3), on which a first filter 3 is arranged. As can be seen, this first filter 3 has a circular shape so as to mate perfectly along the periphery with said circular-shaped annular edge 201.
Fig. 2 shows, viewed from below, the filter cartridge of Fig. 1. The dome- shaped part 101 formed on the side where the coffee infusion is discharged from the body 1 has, at the top and therefore centrally, a small-size hole 4 for discharging the coffee infusion.
In the cross-section of the filter cartridge shown in Fig. 3 it is possible to see more clearly the form of the body 1 containing the coffee powder 2. This coffee powder 2 is contained inside the filter cartridge between said first filter 3 and a second circular-shaped filter 5 provided with a series of small holes 105 and arranged inside the body 1 of said filter cartridge substantially on the bottom of the dome-shaped part 101.
Fig. 4 shows a first variant of the filter cartridge illustrated in the figures described hitherto. The projecting edge 301 formed on the filling side of the body 1 of said filter cartridge has a square or rectangular shape and therefore the filter 6 will also have a square or rectangular shape.
A further variation of embodiment of the present filter cartridge is shown in Fig. 5. In this case the projecting edge 401 has a triangular shape and consequently the filter 7 will also have a triangular shape. Obviously it can be understood how the shape of said projecting edge formed on the filling side of the body of the present filter cartridge may assume various regular or irregular polygonal shapes, as an alternative to the circular, rectangular or square and triangular shapes described in the previous figures.
Fig. 6 shows a second embodiment of the present filter cartridge. The body 1 containing the coffee powder 2 comprises on the filling side the projecting edge 201 which, as mentioned, may have any shape, for example a circular shape, above which the filter 3 is positioned, while on the side where the coffee infusion is discharged this body 1 comprises a rounded part 501 with a decreasing cross- section and having a final flattened zone 601. A filter 9 with microscopic pores is rested inside the body 1 of the filter cartridge and above said final flattened zone 601. Holes 8 with a cross-section decreasing towards the side where the coffee infusion is discharged are formed downstream of said filter 9, in this final flattened zone 601. These holes 8 communicate with the exterior by means of the recesses 10 formed extending from the outer side of said flattened zone 601. If we consider Fig. 7, it is possible to understand more clearly the arrangement of the recesses 10 and the holes 8 provided in the flattened zone 601. As can be seen, these recesses 10 may for example be three in number and be distributed uniformly over said flattened zone 601. In this case, in fact, said recesses 10 are in the form of circle segments, having the same dimensions and spaced equally from each other, so as to optimise discharging of the coffee infusion from the filter cartridge. Four holes 8, which are also uniformly distributed, are provided inside each circle-segment recess 10.
During dispensing of the coffee infusion by means of the present disposable filter cartridge arranged inside an espresso coffee machine which is known per se, the hot water under pressure passes down through the first filter 3, 6, 7 positioned on the projecting edge 201 , 301 , 401 and flows over the coffee powder 2 contained inside the body 1 of the filter cartridge. At this point, the flow cross-section of the coffee infusion is restricted towards the dome-shaped part 101 of Fig.v1 or towards the rounded part 501 with the flattened zone 601 shown in Fig. 6: in the case of the first embodiment of the filter cartridge shown in Fig. 1 , the coffee infusion passes through the filter 5 provided with small holes 105 and reaches the hole 4 where it is dispensed, while, in the case of the second embodiment of the filter cartridge, the coffee infusion passes through the filter 9 resting on the flattened zone 601 and passes through the diverging holes 8, flowing outside the filter cartridge from the recesses 10. In both the filter cartridge embodiments, the coffee infusion passes from a restriction in the flow cross-section, the dome-shaped part 101 and the rounded part 501 as far as the holes 4 and 8, to a sudden widened part, at the outlet of the single hole 4 or holes 8, expanding so as to produce advantageously a particularly creamy coffee infusion. As regards the filters 5 and 9 with microscopic pores, they have been shown as formed by separate disks assembled on the bottom of the body 1 of the filter cartridge according to the invention, it being understood that these filters may be formed as one piece with the body 1 of the cartridge during moulding thereof.
