Abstract

Provided is a non-alkaline composition for the preservation of wood and other cellulosic materials. The composition comprises an aqueous dispersion of micronized inorganic compounds and/or organic biocides. Also provided is a method for making the composition.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS received by the International Bureau on 21 September 2006 (21.09.2006)
1. An aqueous wood preservative composition comprising an inorganic compound component comprising micronized particles, said inorganic component selected from the group consisting of copper, copper compounds and combinations thereof and, optionally, an organic biocide component, which optionally comprises micronized particles; wherein the pH of ihe composition is less than 7, and wherein greater than SO wt percent of the particles are micronized.
2. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition comprises an organic biocide component selected from the group consisting of biocides listed in Table I.
3. The composition of claim I wherein the pH of the composition is in the range of from S to 7.
4. The composition of claim 1 wherein the composition comprises an inorganic compound "which comprises copper, one or more copper compounds, or conxbinations thereof .
5. The composition of claim 4, wherein the inorganic compound component is micronized and comprises one or more copper compounds selected from the group consisting of copper hydroxide, copper oxide copper carbonate, basic copper carbonate, copper oxychloride, copper 8-hydroxyquinolate, copper dimethyldithiocarbamate, copper omadirte and copper borate.

The composition of claim 2, wherein the organic biocide component comprises tebuconazole,propiconazole, cyproconazole, bifenthrin, permethrin, cypermefhrin, 2- (thiocyanatomefhyluiio)benzothiazole, Chlorothalonil, Dichlofluanid, KATEtON 930, KATHON WT, Methylisothiazolinone, Benzisothiazolin-3-one, 2-octyl-3-isothiazolonea Imidacloprid, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Fipronil, Carbendazim or Cyfluthrin.
7. The composition of claim 6, wherein the inorganic component is copper carbonate or copper hydroxide and the organic biocide is a compound selected from the group consisting of didecyidimethylarπmoπium chloride, didecyldimethylammonium carbonate, tebuconazole and cyproconazole.

8. The composition of claim 1 wherein greater than 60 wt % of the παicronized particles have diameters in the range of 0.05 to 1.0 microns.
9. The composition of claim 2 wherein the composition comprises am organic biocide component which is selected from the group consisting of Cyproconazole, Piropiconazole,
Tebuconazole, Busan (TCMTB), 2-(thiocyanatomethylthio) benzothiazole, Chlorothalonil, Dichlofluanid, KATHON 930, KATHON WT, Methylisothiazolinone, Benzisothiazolin-3-one, 2-octyI-3-isothiazo!one, Irnidacloprid, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate (IPBC)3, Bifenihrin, Cypermethrin, Permethrin, Chitin, Chitosan, Clorpyrifos, 4-cumyIphenol, Kpronil, Carbendazim, Cyfluthrin, and 4-aIpha-Cumylphenol.
10. The composition of claim 1, further comprising an agent selectecϋ from the group consisting of water repellants, coloiants, emulsifying agesnts, dispersants, stabilizers and TJV inhibitors.
11. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition for treating wood further comprises one or more enhancing agents.
12. A method for fabricating a preserved wood product comprising tlie steps of: a) providing a wood preservative composition comprising 1) a micronized inorganic component selected from the group consisting of a metal, metal coanpound, or combinations thereof and, optionally, 2) an organic biocide; wherein the inorganic compound component and, optionally, *he organic biocide component comprises a dispersion of particles; wherein greater than 80 wt r»ercent of the particles are micronized; b) adding one or more acids to the composition, wherein the ^H of the composition after addition is less than 7; and c) contacting the product with the wood preservative composition.
13. The method of claim 12, wherein step c) comprises pressure treating the wood product with the preservative composition.
14. The method of claim 12, wherein the composition comprises a microtdzed inorganic component and an organic biocide which is either water soluble or micronized.
15. The method of claim 14, wherein the inorganic component comprises one or more copper compounds that are selected from the group consisting of copper hydroxide, copper oxide copper carbonate, basic copper carbonate, copper oxychloride, copper 8-hyάroxyquinolate3 copper dimethyldithiocarbamate, copper omadine and copper botate; and wherein the organic biocide component comprises tebuconazole, propiconazole, cyproconazole, bifenthrin, permethrin, cypermethrin, 2-(thiocyanatomethyltnio)ben2X3thiazole, Chlorothalonil, Dichlofluanid, KATHON 930, KATHON WT, Methylisothiazolinone, Benzisothiazolin-3-one, 2-octyl-3-isothiazolone, Imidacloprid, lodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Fipronil, Carbendazim or Cyfluthrin.
16. The method of claim 12 wherein fhepH of the composition after step b) is in the range of from 5 to 7.

17. The method of claim 13 wherein greater than 60 wt % of the micronized particles have diameters in the range of 0.05 to 1.0 microns..

The method of claim 14 wherein the composition comprises an organic biocide component which is selected from the group consisting of Cyproconazole, Propiconazole, Tebuconazole, Busan (TCMTB), 2-(thiocyanatomethylthio) benzothiazole, Chlorothalonil, Dϊchlofluanid, KATHON 930, KATHON WT, Methylisothiazolinone, Benzisothiazolin-3- one, 2-octyl-3-isothiazolone, Imidacloprid, Iodopropynyi Butylcarbamate (TPBC)3 Bifenthrin, Cypermethrin, Permethrirt, Chitin, Chitosan, Clorpyrifbs, 4-cumylphenol, Fipronil, Carbendazim, Cyfluthrin, and 4-alpha-Ctimylphenol.
19. The method claim 12, wherein the wood preservative composition further comprises an agent selected from the group consisting of water repellants, colorants, emulsifying agents, dispersants, stabilizers and UV inhibitors.
20. The method of claim 12, wherein the wood preservative composition further comprises one or more enhancing agents.
