COMMUNICATION DEVICE DISPLAYING A NUMERIC INFORMATION SEQUENCE IN GROUPS OF DIGITS
Field of the invention
This invention is related to a phone and more specifically to keypad and display of the phone. By a selection made by the keypad, the phone is configured to arrange the numeric information sequence displayed on the display into groups of digits so that the groups have predetermined length. The invention can be applied either for fixed or mobile phones.
Background art
The numeric information displayed on the display is usually not in groups, i.e. the whole number having n digits is displayed as one continuous sequence of digits. In the case of longer numbers such displaying of information makes it difficult to get overview of the information on the display.
EP 0844777 discloses a radiotelephone, where a user interface includes a single multi- functionality key with multiple functionality including call handling. The said multi- functionality key is controlled by a controller, which monitors the information displayed on the display and controls the functionality key in dependence on the displayed information.
EP 0946031 discloses a display controller including a memory for storing information related to the phone numbers.
The deficiencies of the prior art is that for the user of the phone, to whom is being called or who is calling, so that the number is displayed as one continuous sequence of digits on the display, it is difficult to get overview of the displayed sequence of digits.
Summary
The object of the invention is to overcome the deficiencies known in the prior art. For that a phone is provided, wherein by the selection made by the keypad, the phone is configured to arrange the numeric information sequence displayed on the display into groups of
predetermined length so that within a group the digits are as continuous sequence of digits, and the groups are separated from each other by blanks or other suitable characters. There are constantly designed new functions for the phones, which are selected and controlled by the keys of the keypad. In order to not to increase the number of keys every key has one or several functions for switching between different modes. Similarity in one embodiment of the present invention the keys of the keypad have one or several functions, so that in one mode by the key can be entered letter and numeric characters. By switching the same key into another mode by that key the phone can be configured in that way that the numeric information sequence displayed on the display can be grouped into groups of digits of predetermined length. In another embodiment of the present invention the object of the invention can be achieved by adding an additional key to the keypad, so that by that additional key the phone can be configured in that way that the numeric information sequence displayed on the display can be grouped into groups of digits of predetermined length. In the preferred embodiment of the present invention the user can configure the phone so that displaying of the digits in groups depends on the length of the entire number and the last group of the displayed digits comprise at least two digits.
Brief description of the drawings
All the above mentioned as well as other features of the present invention can easily be understood with the help of the following description, claims and accompanying drawings where: fig. 1 illustrates a general overview of a phone; fig. 2 illustrates the display of the phone of the present invention with displayed digits; fig. 3 illustrates of the display of the present invention with displayed digits; fig. 4 illustrates another embodiment of the display of the fig. 3; fig. 5 illustrates yet another embodiment of the display of the present invention with displayed digits; fig. 6 illustrates another embodiment of the display of the fig. 5.
Detailed description of the invention
In fig. 1, there is a general overview of a phone according to preferred embodiment of the present invention. Although the invention will be described as a mobile phone, the invention is applicable for any type of phones, which display the calling or called number.
Phone 1 has display 2 and keypad 3. Other elements of the phone are known from the prior art and will not be dealt in details. The phone is configured to group the digits according to a predetermined algorithm. In a preferred embodiment the keypad has a key 4, which enables the user to make a selection to configure the phone to group first the callers country code digits, which are displayed as a separate group of digits 5 (look fig. 2), i.e. depending on country either as one, two or three digit group. The digits following the country code are grouped according to the selection made by the user and depending on the length of the remaining number into groups consisting of two or three digits 6. Between the groups of the digits are blanks 7 or other suitable characters. In the preferred embodiment of the present invention the digits are grouped into groups of equal length. From the other hand all phone numbers cannot be grouped into groups of equal length. In that case groups of different length will be displayed based on a selection made by the user. For example fig. 3 illustrates the groups of digits displayed on the display if the number has seven digits. In the embodiment as illustrated on the fig. 3 the groups of the digits are separated by blanks. In the embodiment as illustrated on the fig. 4 the same groups of the digits of the fig. 3 are separated by strokes. Alternatively the the same seven digits number of the fig. 3 can be displayed so that the fist group consists of one digit and the remaining two groups each consist of three digits (fig. 5). In the embodiment as illustrated on the fig. 6 the same groups of the digits of the fig. 5 are separated by asterisks.
The calling or called number can be grouped by the selection of the user to consist the groups of either one, two, three, four or five digits.
In one preferred embodiment of the present invention the keypad of the phone comprises a key 8, having several functions for switching between different modes, wherein one mode enables the phone to be configured to group the calling or called number into groups of digits. Switching between the different modes and making the selections by the key 8 can be completed in different ways, including multiple short term successive pressing, single long term pressing, by voice command, etc.
Although the invention has been described in terms of preferred embodiments as illustrated, it is not the intention to restrict the invention to cover only those embodiments. For example in the preferred embodiment the groups were separated by blanks. However
the object of the invention is to group the displayed digits and separate the groups.
Therefore the invention should include all suitable means for separating the groups, for example by characters like stroke, asterisk, slash etc. Those skilled in the art, however, will easily recognize that the invention may be practiced with modifications and adaptations without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the following claims.
