Description

Live Performance Entertainment Apparatus and Method
The present invention relates to apparatus and a method for providing live performance entertainment. 5
The karaoke concept allows a non-professional singer to superimpose their vocals on to a recorded backing track in a "live" situation, so providing an entertaining performance, with or without an audience. There are various ways in which this can be set up. One relatively simple set-up includes a public 0 address unit (PA) comprising a microphone, sound mixer, amplifier and loudspeaker, a TV with a VCR or DVD player, and a video cassette or DVD. The video cassette or DVD holds a recording of the backing track to a song and the lyrics in a visual format. When the video cassette or DVD is played, the backing track is played through the TV speakers, the lyrics scroll along the TV 5 screen in synchronism, and the performer sings through the PA, reading the lyrics from the screen.
In a variation on this, a dedicated karaoke unit includes the PA system with a combined DVD player. This simply uses a TV as a video monitor on which the 0 lyrics are scrolled in synchronism with the backing track which plays through the PA system, allowing the vocals to be mixed with the backing.
A more professional arrangement, comprises an integrated system with microphone, a mixer, amplifier and loudspeakers, TV monitors for performer 5 and audience, and a DVD player. A DVD will hold the backing track, the lyrics in a visual format and optionally, a video track over which the lyrics are scrolled, and which will be displayed for the performer and audience.
138393V1 It is, of course, well known to use cameras to record live events such as concerts, and indeed, it has been known to record karaoke performances. However, recorded karaoke performances tend to be visually uninspiring, even if the vocals are entertaining. 5
It is an object of the present invention to provide a karaoke system with greater visual entertainment.
According to the invention, live performance entertainment apparatus 0 comprises a sound amplification system, a video monitor, a sound and video playback facility, a video camera, and a control system; in which the control system is arranged to superimpose a live (real time) image captured by the camera onto a pre-recorded video recording or track as it is played by the playback facility to produce a composite video track which is transmitted to the 5 video monitor so that the live image and pre-recorded video track are shown simultaneously as the composite video track on the video monitor.
Preferably, the sound amplification system comprises one or more microphones, a sound mixer, optionally sound effect facilities such as echo, 0 reverb etc., an amplifier and loudspeakers. The video monitor may be a conventional TV set. Preferably, there are at least two video monitors or screens, one for the performer and one for the audience, through there may be more audience screens.
5 Conveniently, the sound and video playback facility is a DVD player. DVDs (or some other equivalent) for use with the system would be specially recorded with a backing sound track, visual lyrics scrolling in synchronism, and additionally, a backing video track with moving scenarios.
138393V1 Preferably the control system comprises suitable software which manipulates the live image from the camera in digital form and the pre-recorded video track from the DVD, also in digital form. In one embodiment, the video track includes an image of an original performer, possibly the original performer of 5 the corresponding song, and the software takes the necessary visual information from the live camera image, constructs an artificial image of the live performer following the movements of the original performer, and substitutes the artificial image for the image of the original performer. In this way, the video track viewed in the monitors will have the live performer "in the 0 video" in place of the original performer. Alternatively, the video track may be an original creation, with no existing performer present, and the image of the live performer taken by the video camera is superimposed on the video track.
In a preformed embodiment, Chroma-Key or Blue Screen technology is used to 5 superimpose the live image on to the pre-recorded background.
The apparatus therefore preferably also includes a plain background device, which may be a large sheet, preferably of a single colour, e.g. blue. In use, this is placed behind the live performer and the camera shoots the performer with 0 the evenly-lit blue sheet as background. The control system then replaces the blue content of the video recording of the performer (preferably in real time) with the content of the pre-recorded video track. In this way, the live recorded image of the performer is effectively "superimposed" on the pre-recorded background video track. 5
This process may be carried out manually, with an operator "keying out" the blue background in the live video track, allowing it to be replaced by the prerecorded background. Preferably, however, this operation is carried out
138393V1 automatically by the control system. Preferably, the process is a digital process.
While the system has been described with reference to a blue background, it is 5 to be understood that other colours or other known equivalent systems can be employed.
The invention is not restricted to singers and songs with lyrics; it also extends to instrumentalists, dancers etc. Thus, an entire ensemble can be filmed by the 0 camera and superimposed on a pre-recorded video track, if desired in place of some or all of existing performers on the video track, or on to an originally created video track.
Preferably, the apparatus also includes a recording facility which is arranged to 5 capture the performance. Preferably, the captured performance would include the audio backing, the vocal performance and the image of the performer superimposed on the video track, but without the scrolling lyrics. The recording facility is preferably a DVD recorder, but could be a VCR or a computer hard disk. 0
The invention also extends to a method of providing live entertainment by using the apparatus according to the invention described above.
It is also contemplated to incorporate still images as the video track or as part 5 of it. This concept could be based on a range of back drop/images/scenes that would be supplied on a digital camera memory chip. The chip would be inserted into a digital camera and the pre-edited background viewed on the camera. The live performer could then be superimposed on the background.
138393V1 In general therefore, the invention may be considered to include three main component parts.
1. DVD software that provides background to form part of the
5 performance. This could be a stage/concert environment or any other running background. It can either allow a position within the background for the performer to fit in and take the position of an original performer/artist, or may allow a pre-recorded background video track to replace the background of a live recording. The words/lyrics/script to the song or performance will be 0 displayed to help the user sing/perform along in time and with the correct words.
2. A microphone mixing facility and input that allows the performer to add their vocals to the music/instrumental/performance being played from the 5 DVD. This can either come as an add-on to an existing regular DVD player or as part of an all-in-one Karaoke type box, that will join up to a TV/Monitor/screen.
3. A camera facility that allows the performer to add their visual 0 performance to the pre-recorded background being played from the DVD.
Again, this can either come as an addron to an existing regular DVD player or as part of an all-in-one Karaoke type box, that will join up to a TV/Monitor/screen.
5 The invention may be carried into practice in various ways, and an embodiment will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which the single figure is a schematic representation of a live performance entertainment apparatus in accordance with the invention.
138393v1 Figure 1 shows the apparatus of the invention. It comprises a microphone 11, a mixer 12, a sound amplifier 13, loudspeakers 14, a digital video camera 15, a video monitor 16, a DVD player 17, a control unit 18 and a blue backdrop 19. The microphone 11 is plugged into the mixer 12 which is connected to the 5 amplifier 13 which drives the loudspeakers 14. The camera 15 feeds its digital signal to the control unit 18 to which the DVD player 17 is also connected. The DVD player 17 sends its audio signal to the amplifier 13 and its video signal to the monitor 16.
0 A DVD for a particular song for the player 17 includes a backing sound track, the song lyrics in visual form and a pre-recorded background moving video track. In practice, the mixer 12, amplifier 13, DVD player 17 and control unit 18 would all form a single consolidated unit.
5 In use, the DVD is loaded into the player 17 and played. The sound is amplified and is heard from the loudspeakers 14. At the same time, the lyrics • are scrolled across the monitor 16, over the moving video track, in synchronism with the sound track. A singer 21 sings the song into the microphone 11, and this vocal is mixed and amplified and fed to the loudspeakers 14 along with the 0 backing audio track from the DVD. Simultaneously, the camera 14 films the singer 21 against the blue backdrop 19 and feeds the live image to the control unit 18. The control unit 18 processes the live image to remove the blue background and replace it with the pre-recorded background video track, thereby effectively superimposing the live performance on to the pre-recorded 5 background video track.
The end result is a sound and video performance from the singer 21, which can be heard through the speakers 14 against the sound track and seen on the screen
138393v1 16 against the video track. Optionally, this performance can be recorded, for example on a hard disc in the control unit or on a DVD recorder.
