Description

CARD CONNECTOR WITH REDUCED FEXT
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to an electrical connector, and more particularly to a circuit card connector.
Background of the Invention
In a computer or telecommunication system, an interface connecting to external devices is generally designed as a bus for transmitting various data. The hardware interface is fabricated to be an expandable slot, e.g. a card connector. The slot is attached to a motherboard of the computer. A modular daughter board or circuit card, such as an interface card or memory card, can be inserted into the slot, so as connect to the motherboard.
In recent years, the speed of central processing unit (CPU) for computers is improved continuously, from the earliest 33 MHz, 66 MHz, to Pentium III 500 MHz and to the latest Pentium IV 3.06 GHz. As such, the electronic signal transmission speeds of main board and computer peripherals must be increased accordingly, so as to match the processing speed of the CPU.
Signal transmission through a connector can be classified into two modes, namely single-ended signal and differential mode signal. The single-ended signal means that only one conductor is used when transmitting one signal between two electronic elements or devices that are connected. The transmission of a differential mode signal requires two matching conductors, so as to transmit the signals back and forth between two electronic elements or devices that are connected.
The differential mode signals transmitted on two conductors are two complementary signals, i.e., having the same amplitude but opposite polarities (with a phase difference of 180 degrees). In a high-speed transmission environment, a better electrical characteristic is obtained by differential mode signal transmission. The time sequence and response capability required by the system can be easily achieved, thereby the probability of the system's misjudging or missing part of the data can be reduced. Therefore, in practice, when an edge connector is used to connect various interface cards and memory modules to the motherboard, each pair of conductors (generally referred to as
"contacts") on one side of the connector is mostly used to transmit signals under the differential mode.
Although better electrical characteristics of a connection system can be obtained by using differential mode signal transmission, the electrical characteristics of a pair of differential mode signals with opposite polarities is affected by the factors of the connector, such as the material and shape of the conductor, the arrangements of the conductors in relation to each other, as well as the arrangement of the conductors with the insulative material. Particularly, as computers and communication apparatus are getting smaller, the structure of the electronic connector also becomes more and more impact, e.g. with the distance between the conductors of the connector greatly reduced, and the density of the pins increased,. These changes, however, aggravates the problems related to signal transmission with high speed or high frequency, such as impedance, cross talk, propagation delay, attenuation, skew and rise time degradation. Therefore, obtaining desired performance of the system with a appropriate connectors has become a challenge to the industry.
Summary of the Invention
A purpose of the present invention is to provide a card connector for transmitting differential mode signals with a good electrical characteristic in an environment of high- 5 density pins and high-speed transmission environment.
In one embodiment, a connector for establishing electrical connection between a motherboard and a daughter board is provided. The connector has a housing and a plurality of electrically conductive terminals disposed in the housing. Each terminal has a l o connecting portion disposed along a first row and a second row defining a channel therebetween. An elongated electrical conductor such as a metal plate is attached to the housing and disposed in the channel.. The elongated electrical conductor can effectively reduce Far End Cross Talk (FEXT) level of the connector, as well as increase the strength and rigidity of the connector.

Detailed Description Of Preferred Embodiments
As shown in Figs. IA and 2, a card connector 1 includes a housing 20, a plurality pairs of first terminals 38, a plurality pairs of second terminals 39, and first and second elongated electrical conductor, such as metal plates 4a and 4b. Housing 20 has a slot 23 formed by a pair of walls 24 and 25, for receiving a circuit card such as a daughter board (not shown).
As shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 3A, the plurality pairs of first terminals 38 are disposed in housing 20. Each pair of the first terminals 38a, 38b has a contact portion 32c, 32a and a connection portion 32d, 32b. Connection portions 32d and 32b of the plurality pairs of first terminals 38 are bent from respective contact portions along a first direction 138.
As shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 3B, the plurality pairs of second terminals 39 are disposed in housing 20, in a manner staggered with respect to the plurality pairs of first terminals 38. Each pair of the second terminals 39a, 39b has a contact portion 36c, 36a and a connection portion 36d, 36b. Connection portions 36d and 36b of the plurality pairs of second terminals 38 are bent from respective contact portions along a second direction 139 which is opposite to first direction 138.
Connection portions 32, 36d, 32b, 36b form respective connection pin rows 52, 54, 56 and 58. Between first row 52 and second row 54 there is defined a first channel 70a. between third row C and fourth row D there is defined a second channel 70b. First and second plates 4a and 4b, made of electrically conductive material such as copper, are disposed in, but electrically insulated from, the respective first and second channels 70a and 70b, and fixed to housing 20. First and second plates 4a and 4b may extends over a partial or full length of channel 70a or 70b.
In one embodiment, first and second plates 4a and 4b are positioned such that when card connector 1 is attached to a PCB, there remains a gap between first and second plates 4a and 4b and the PCB, i.e. first and second plates 4a and 4b do not contact the PCB. As shown in Figs. IB and 1C, first and second plates 4a and 4b may have barbs 42 and/or projections 44 formed on the side walls. Recesses 242, 244 may also be provided in housing 20 for receiving barbs 42 and/or projections 44. When metal plate 4a and 4b are inserted into the housing, barbs 42, projections 44 and the corresponding housing portion may be deformed, so that metal plates 4a and 4b can be firmly fixed to housing 20. Alternatively, the groove or recess provided on housing 20 may be slightly narrower than the thickness of plates 4a and 4b, and plates 4a and 4b can be inserted and fixed into the groove or recess by interference fit.
Fig. 4 shows the conductors and metal plate structure of a card connector according to another embodiment of the invention. In this embodiment, conductors 38 and 39 form connection pin rows 52, 54, 56 and 58. Between second row 54 and third row 56, there is defined a third channel within which, a third plate 4c is disposed.
With one or more metal plates disposed between the conductor rows, a card connector can achieve a far-end cross talk performance improvement of about 1 to 2.5 db, when the connector is used for transmission of 2.0 - 4.0 GHz signals, compared to a conventional connector, as shown in Fig. 5. An added advantages is that, as the housing is made of insulative material and with the insertion of the metal place(s), the strength and rigidity of the housing is increased.
Although embodiments of the present invention have been illustrated in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and described in the foregoing detailed description, it should be appreciated that the invention is not limited to the embodiments disclosed. For example, although metal plates 4a, 4b and 4c are disclosed as examples, elongated electrical conductors with shapes other than a plate, e.g. a metal layer, a wire, a rod, a bar or the like, may be used. Therefore, the present invention should be understood to be capable of numerous rearrangements, modifications, alternatives and substitutions without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth and recited by the following claims.
