Abstract
Embodiments of the invention relate to method of, and system for, controlling access to a plurality of communications sessions involving a plurality of users. In a method according to an embodiment of the invention each of the communications sessions is for access by a plurality of users and data identifying said plurality of communications sessions have been stored in association with data indicative of one or more associated characteristics. The method comprises: receiving a request (M1) to initiate communications among members (T1, T2, T3, T4) of a group of users, said request comprising data identifying the group of users; responsive to receiving said request, selecting a communications session on the basis of data identifying the group and at least some of said stored data indicative of characteristics of a given communications session; and transmitting messages to at least some members of the group, the or each message (M2a, M2b, M2c) having a message body comprising data providing access to the selected communications session and a destination address determined from data indicative of a given member of the group.
Claims
1. A method of controlling access to a plurality of communications sessions, each of said communications sessions being for access by a plurality of users, wherein data identifying said plurality of communications sessions have been stored in association with data indicative of one or more characteristics thereof, the method comprising: receiving a request to initiate communications among a plurality of members of a group of users, said request comprising data identifying the group of users; responsive to receiving said request, selecting an active communications session on the basis of data identifying the group and at least some of said stored data indicative of characteristics of a given communications session; and transmitting messages to at least some members of the group, the or each message having a message body comprising data providing access to the selected communications session and a destination address determined from data indicative of a given member of the group.
2. A method according to claim 1, in which said request to initiate communications is received via a data message.
3. A method according to claim 2, in which the data message contains a group identifier, and the method includes accessing a storage system so as to identify group members corresponding thereto.
4. A method according to claim 2 or claim 3, in which the data message contains one or more keywords, and the method includes accessing a storage system so as to identify users having preference data corresponding to said keywords, whereby to identify members of the group. 15
5. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, in which said request to initiate communications is received from a terminal associated with a member of the group, and the method includes identifying the group members on the basis of an identifier associated with said terminal.
6. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the said request to initiate communications is received from an information source, and the method includes identifying the group members on the basis of an identifier associated with said information source.
7. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, including selecting said communications session from a list of predetermined communications sessions.
8. A method according to claim 7, including selecting said communications session on the basis of priority information associated with said predetermined communications sessions.
9. A method according to claim 7 or claim 8, including identifying preference data associated with said identified members of the group and matching said identified preference data with preference data associated with said predetermined communications sessions, whereby to select the communications session.

A method according to any one of claim 7 to claim 9, including identifying preference data associated with said identified members of the group and matching said identified preference data with preference data associated with said members of a group previously notified of the communications session, whereby to select the communications session 16
11. A method according to any one of claim 7 to claim 10, including creating a plurality of messages for transmission to said at least some of the group members, in which each said created message contains a selectable link to the selected communications session.
12. A method according to claim 11, including identifying content accompanying the data indicative of said group of users, and appending said identified content to each said created message.
13. A method according to claim 11 or claim 12, including accessing an information source so as to retrieve information relating to said at least some of the group members, and appending the retrieved information to each said created message.
14. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the communications session is in progress at the time of transmission of the messages to said at least some members of the group.
15. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the communications session is triggered in response to receipt of a HTTP request from one of said members of the group.
16. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the communications session is publicly accessible.
17. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the data indicative of a group of users is received via the short messaging service (SMS). 17
18. A method according to any one of claim 1 to claim 16, in which the data indicative of a group of users is received via the Unstructured Supplementary Services Data (USSD) messaging service.
19. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the messages are transmitted to at least some members of the group via the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) Push messaging service.
20. A system for controlling access to a plurality of communications sessions, each of said communications sessions being for access by a plurality of users, wherein data identifying said plurality of communications sessions have been stored in association with data indicative of one or more characteristics thereof, the system comprising: an interface arranged to receive data indicative of plurality of members of a group of users ; a processing system arranged to select an active communications session on the basis of data identifying the group and at least some of said stored data indicative of characteristics of a given communications session, the processing system being arranged to transmit messages to at least some members of the group upon selection of the communications session, wherein the transmitted messages comprise a message body having data providing access to the selected communications session and a destination address determined from data indicative of a given member of the group.
21. A system according to claim 20, wherein said data indicative of a group of users comprising a group identifier and the processing system is arranged to access a storage system so as to identify group members corresponding to said group identifier.
22. A system according to claim 20 or claim 21, wherein the data indicative of a group of users is received via a data message containing one or 18
more keywords, and the processing system is arranged to access a storage system so as to identify users having preference data corresponding to said keywords, whereby to identify members of the group.
23. A system according to any one of claim 20 to claim 22, wherein the processing system is arranged to derive an identifier associated with an origin of the data message and to identify the group members on the basis of said identifier.

A system according to claim 23, wherein the processing system is arranged to identify preference data associated with said identified members of the group and to match said identified preference data with preference data associated with said members of a group previously notified of the communications session, whereby to select the communications session

A system according to any one of claim 21 to claim 24, wherein the processing system is arranged to create a message body comprising a selectable link to a publicly accessible network location corresponding to the selected communications session and to transmit a plurality of messages comprising said message body to said at least some of the group members.
26. A system according to claim 25, wherein the system is further arranged to identify content accompanying the data indicative of said group of users, and to append said identified content to said message body.
27. A system according to claim 25 or claim 26, wherein the system is further arranged to access an information source so as to retrieve information relating to said at least some of the group members and to append the retrieved information to said message body. 19

A method of coordinating a communications session involving a plurality of users, the method comprising: receiving data indicative of a group of users, said group of users comprising a plurality of members; responsive to identifying members of the group, transmitting messages to at least some members of the group, the or each message having a message body comprising data providing access to a communications session and a destination address determined from data indicative of a given member of the group, wherein the communications session accessible via a said transmitted message involves participants other than the group members.
29. A method according to claim 28, including receiving a request to initiate communications, said request comprising said data indicative of the group of users.
30. A method according to claim 29, in which the request includes a group identifier, and the method includes accessing a storage system so as to identify group members corresponding thereto.
31. A method according to claim 29 or claim 30, in which the request includes one or more keywords, and the method includes accessing a storage system so as to identify users having preference data corresponding to said keywords, whereby to identify members of the group.
32. A method according to any one of claim 29 to claim 31 , in which said request to initiate communications is received from a terminal associated with a member of the group, and the method includes identifying the group members on the basis of an identifier associated with said terminal. 20
33. A method according to any one of claim 29 to claim 32, in which the said request to initiate communications is received from an information source, and the method includes identifying the group members on the basis of an identifier associated with said information source.
34. A method according to any one of claim 28 to claim 33, including selecting said communications session from a list of predetermined communications sessions.
35. A method according to claim 34, including selecting said communications session on the basis of priority information associated with said predetermined communications sessions.
36. A method according to claim 34 or claim 35, including identifying preference data associated with said identified members of the group and matching said identified preference data with preference data associated with said predetermined communications sessions, whereby to select the communications session.
37. A method according to any one of claim 34 to claim 36, including identifying preference data associated with said identified members of the group and matching said identified preference data with preference data associated with said members of a group previously notified of the communications session, whereby to select the communications session
38. A method according to any one of claim 34 to claim 37, including creating a plurality of messages for transmission to said at least some of the group members, in which each said created message contains a selectable link to the selected communications session. 21
39. A method according to claim 38, including identifying content accompanying the data indicative of said group of users, and appending said identified content to each said created message.
40. A method according to claim 38 or claim 39, including accessing an information source so as to retrieve information relating to said at least some of the group members, and appending the retrieved information to each said created message.
41. A method according to any one of claim 28 to claim 40, in which the communications session is in progress at the time of transmission of the messages to said at least some members of the group.
42. A method according to any one of claim 28 to claim 41, in which the communications session is triggered in response to receipt of a HTTP request from one of said members of the group.
43. A method according to any one of claim 28 to claim 42, in which the data indicative of a group of users is received via the short messaging service (SMS).
44. A method according to any one of claim 28 to claim 42, in which the data indicative of a group of users is received via the Unstructured Supplementary Services Data (USSD) messaging service.
45. A method according to any one of claim 28 to claim 44, in which the messages are transmitted to at least some members of the group via any one of the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) Push messaging service, the Short Messaging Service (SMS), or the Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). 22

A system for coordinating a communications session involving a plurality of users, the system comprising: an interface arranged to receive data indicative of a group of users, said group of users comprising a plurality of members; a processing system arranged to transmit messages to at least some members of the group, the or each message having a message body comprising data providing access to a communications session and a destination address determined from data indicative of a given member of the group, wherein the communications session accessible via a said transmitted message involves participants other than the group members.
47. A system according to claim 46, wherein said data indicative of a group of users comprising a group identifier and the processing system is arranged to access a storage system so as to identify group members corresponding to said group identifier.
48. A system according to claim 46 or claim 47, wherein the data indicative of a group of users is received via a data message containing one or more keywords, and the processing system is arranged to access a storage system so as to identify users having preference data corresponding to said keywords, whereby to identify members of the group.
49. A system according to any one of claim 46 to claim 48, wherein the processing system is arranged to derive an identifier associated with an origin of the data message and to identify the group members on the basis of said identifier.
50. A system according to claim 49, wherein the processing system is arranged to identify preference data associated with said identified members of the group and to match said identified preference data with preference data 23
associated with said members of a group previously notified of the communications session, whereby to select the communications session

A system according to any one of claim 48 to claim 50, wherein the processing system is arranged to create a message body comprising a selectable link to a publicly accessible network location corresponding to the selected communications session and to transmit a plurality of messages comprising said message body to said at least some of the group members.
52. A system according to claim 51, wherein the system is further arranged to identify content accompanying the data indicative of said group of users, and to append said identified content to said message body.
53. A system according to claim 51 or claim 52, wherein the system is further arranged to access an information source so as to retrieve information relating to said at least some of the group members and to append the retrieved information to said message body.
54. A method of announcing a group communications session for access by a plurality of users, wherein data identifying said communications session have been stored in association with data indicative of one or more characteristics thereof, the method comprising: receiving data indicative of a group of users, said group of users comprising a plurality of members; selecting an active communications session on the basis of data identifying the group and at least some of said stored data indicative of characteristics of a given communications session; and transmitting messages to at least some members of the group, the or each message having a message body comprising data providing access to the selected communications session and a destination address determined from data indicative of a given member of the group, 24
wherein the message body includes an information portion providing information in relation to the communications session, the information portion being selected at least on the basis of stored data associated with the selected communications session.
55. A computer program, or a suite of computer programs, comprising program code means being adapted to perform the steps of any one of claim 1 to claim 19 when the program is run on a computer or on a suite of computers.
56. A computer-readable medium having stored thereon a data structure comprising the computer program product according to claim 55.
57. A computer program, or a suite of computer programs, comprising program code means being adapted to perform the steps of any one of claim 28 to claim 45 when the program is run on a computer or on a suite of computers.
58. A computer-readable medium having stored thereon a data structure comprising the computer program product according to claim 57.
