Abstract

A packaging material (1) for a number of consumer goods of a certain type, comprising a packing means suitable for containing a number of consumer goods, a balloon (2), a holder (3) filled with a liquid gas suitable for inflating the air balloon, and a connecting mechanism (4, 5) for maintaining the filled air balloon at a certain height above the packaging material.

Description

Packaging material for a number of consumer goods
The invention relates to a packaging material for a number of consumer goods.
Such a packaging material is of prior art.
It is general practice to pack consumer goods in boxes, bags and the like in order to transport the goods from the production unit to the whole trade and from the wholesale trade to the retail trade. Here the method of packing is optimised in terms of the transport costs, which among other things determines the shape, volume and weight of the packaging material.
The problem here is that the packaging material is not optimum for the purposes of sale. Consequently the consumer goods in the retail trade must frequently be repaired in order to ensure that they are in a presentable, saleable condition. This imposes an additional burden on the retail trade.
This problem is all the more serious in the case of consumer goods with a limited shelf life, where the consumer goods whose use by date has been exceeded or is about to be exceeded must first be replaced in the packaging material, whereupon the fresh consumer goods can be unpacked.
The object of the invention is to provide a packaging material in which this problem is largely avoided.
This object is achieved according to the invention by means of the measures according to Claim 1.
By simply inflating the balloon the packaging material can be deposited anywhere in the retail shop, in which case the balloon is able to attract sufficient attention with the appropriate advertising message to ensure that the product remains saleable.
Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will become clear from the following description in which reference is made to the attached drawing in which a packaging material according to the invention is diagrammatically represented.
C COPY In a packaging material 1 with products (for example, flowers in flowpack packing), to which attention must be directed in order to encourage sales, a balloon 2 printed with advertising messages is also packed. A disposable cartridge 3, filled with helium, is also included in packaging material 1. The empty balloon and helium cartridge 3 are packed clearly visibly above or next to the product when packaging material 1 is still closed, so that they are immediately visible on opening. The quantity of helium in disposable cartridge 3 is sufficient to inflate balloon 2 easily as soon as packaging material 1 is installed in the shop. Balloon 2 is connected to two flexible strips or cords 4, 5 on two opposing sides (the long and short sides) of packaging material 1 so that balloon 2 remains floating at approximately eye height just above packaging material 1. If desirable, packaging material 1 may be positioned obliquely so that the visibility of the product can be further enhanced. A light poster 6 or other light promotional material may possibly also be suspended underneath balloon 2.
In a preferred embodiment cartridge 3 and balloon 2 are fitted in a closed packaging material 1 so that they are connected to each other by means of a short hose. When packaging material 1 is closed there is no connection between cartridge 3 and balloon 2. When packaging material 1 is opened in the usual manner balloon 2 is automatically connected to gas cartridge 3, thereby inflating balloon 2 and causing it to rise. When balloon 2 has attained a height at which strips 4, 5 are fully extended, the connection between balloon 2 and gas cartridge 3 is therefore broken and the gas cartridge drops down at a point where it can be removed.
This can be achieved very easily by fitting a shutoff device in the hose connecting cartridge 3 and balloon 2, which valve, when packaging material 1 is opened, is removed or opened. Such a shutoff device may consist of a valve which is opened or of a clamping strip around the hose which is removed by the opening of the packaging material. Cartridge 3 and balloon 2 may be detached by the action of gravity, which may be remedied by means of an elastic connection between cartridge 3 and packaging material 1. Of course a check valve should be fitted in the filling opening of balloon 2.
It is clear that the invention is not limited to the embodiments described and reproduced, but that numerous modifications can be provided, within the scope of the description of the claims that can form part of the invention.

Claims

Claims
1. A packaging material for a number or consumer goods of a certain type, comprising a packing means suitable for containing a number of consumer goods, a balloon, a holder filled with a liquid gas suitable for inflating the air balloon, and a connecting mechanism for maintaining the filled air balloon at a certain height above the packaging material.
2. The packaging material according to Claim 1, characterised in that the balloon carries an advertising message relating to the consumer goods.
3. The packaging material according to Claim 1 , characterised in that the balloon has the shape of a consumer product in the packaging material.
4. The packaging material according to Claim 1 , characterised in that the gas holder only contains gas suitable for inflating the balloon.
5. The packaging material according to Claim 1, characterised in that the connecting mechanism consists of one or two flexible holders.
6. The packaging material according to one of Claims 1 - 5, characterised in that the packaging material also contains promotional material that is sufficiently light to rise with the balloon.
7. The packaging material according to Claim 6, characterised in that the promotional material consists of a power or the like.
8. The packaging material according to one of Claims 1 - 7, characterised in that when the packaging material is closed, the balloon is connected by a short hose to the gas holder, which hose, when the packaging material is closed, does not form a connection between the gas holder and the balloon, and in that means are provided which, when the packaging material is opened in the usual manner, make a connection between the balloon and the gas holder.
