Abstract

A method of monitoring and classifying vehicle traffic (figure 14) comprises Eceiving a plurality of video frames of traffic (item 100) data; subtracting a background image from each video frame of the plurality to form a segmented image having at least one object region (item 108); connecting adjacent object regions in each segmented image into a combined region in response to the adjacent object regions having centers in a common lane region of the video frame, distances between the centers less than a threshold distance, and a similar characteristic in proximate boundary portions (item 110); separating object regions in each segmented image that are located in multiple lane regions of the segmented image into sub-regions Corresponding to the lane regions (item 1 14); subtracting sub- regions from the segmented image that are smallerthan a threshold size (item 1 18); and labeling the combined regions and the remaining sub-regions as single vehicle regions (item 124).
