Abstract

The invention relates to a localization system(100) and a method for providing spatial information about at least one object in a surveillance area, for example about a ball(1) or a player(2) in a sport arena(10). The system comprises an array of light sources(101) for emitting (e.g. IR) light that is reflected by the object(1, 2), and an array of light detectors(102) for detecting said reflected light and for providing an associated detection signal. The detection signal is then evaluated by an evaluation unit(104) to determine the desired spatial information about the object(1, 2), for example via the identification of the light source and/or light detector closest to the object and/or via a triangulation of signal strengths or times-of-flight. To be able to distinguish the contributions of different light sources(101), the light emissions are preferably marked with individual code patterns.
