Description
LED SURFACE LIGHTING DEVICE USING EDGE-ILLUMINATED LIGHT-GUIDE PLATE
The present invention refers to a lightning device, comprising a plurality of light emitting diodes as light sources.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The light produced by light emitting diodes (LEDs) is characterised, at a perception level, by an intense light concentrated in a very small point. In fact, as this technology advances, this relation tends to increase (more intensity and a smaller emitting point). This feature involves that its use must be followed by accessory elements to protect the direct perception of the emitting source.
The means usually used to mitigate these uncomfortable effects to the direct vision is the interposition of light diffuser materials between the LED and the observer, or simply placing the lighting apparatuses so that they cannot be observed directly, such as e.g. at the ceiling.
From a functional point of view, we can divide the lightning produced by LEDs into two great groups. The first group is that formed by LEDs that produce light not "lightning", i.e. they are only lightened themselves. This feature make then specially useful for signalling applications, to the point that nowadays their application for this end covers all the scopes of our usual life in a lot of apparatuses.
The second group are the LEDs whose features of power and configuration permit to lighten with a greater or lower intensity, but, as stated previously, some measures must be taken in their application to prevent undesired effects.
Some of the most common systems to prevent these undesired effects and their consequences are the following ones : interposition of a translucent diffuser screen, that has the drawback that it decreases the light efficiency and the point of the LEDs can be seen;
- interposition of a prismatic screen of diffusion effects, that presents a good light efficiency, but it is not suitable for direct vision; - lightning by reflection of the light of the
LEDs on an opaque screen, that decreases very considerably the lightning performance;
- parabolic cone around the emitter LED, that has a efficient lightning, but it is not suitable for direct vision;
- increase of the number of low power emitting LEDs in the place of few of high power, which increases substantially the emitting surface.
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
With the lightning device of the invention said drawbacks can be solved, presenting other advantages that will be described. The lightning device of the present invention comprises a plurality of light emitting diodes as light source, and it is characterised in that it comprises a transparent plate that is lightened by said light emitting diodes, said plate defining a frontal face and a rear face, and four small faces, two lateral faces, an upper face and a lower face, and it that the rear face and three of said small faces are coated with an opaque material that reflects the light, said light emitting diodes being placed in front of the small face free of said opaque material that reflects the light.
Preferably, said light emitting diodes are of different colours, red, green and blue alternated to each other. Therefore, the device of the present invention emits light of any colour, combining these basic colours. Advantageously, said light emitting diodes are placed aligned in front of one of the side faces of the transparent plate.
Furthermore, the frontal face of said transparent plate can comprise a margin also coated with an opaque material that reflects the light, said margin being wider than the side of said frontal face adjacent to the side face in front of which said light emitting diodes are placed.
According to a preferred embodiment, said opaque material that reflects the light is white paint and said transparent plate is made from methacrylate .
The objective of the lightning device of the present invention is to find a cold lightning system by LEDs that produces enough intensity, balanced, and with an optimal direct perception of the emitter source.
Thanks to the device of the present invention it is possible to obtain lighting apparatuses that do not produce heat, comfortable for the direct perception at a short distance (20 cm) and with an acceptable light performance.
Therefore, the advantages that the present invention presents are the following: it is obtained a uniform diffusion of the light not being observed the emitting LEDs; - it is obtained a compact, modular and versatile system; and its lighting quality is acceptable in a distance up to about 2 meters.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
For a better understanding of what has been disclosed, some drawings are attached, in which, only as a non-limitative example, a practical embodiment is shown. Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the lightning device of the present invention; and
Fig. 2 is a side view of a strip of LEDs included in the lightning device of the present invention.
DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
As it can be seen from Fig. 1, the lighting device of the present invention is formed by a transparent plate, designated generally by reference numeral 1, which is lightened by a plurality of light emitting diodes or
LEDs 2.
Said transparent plate 1 is preferably made from methacrylate and is coated by an opaque material that reflects the light except at its frontal face 3 and at one of its side faces 4. Said opaque material that reflects the light is preferably white paint.
Said LEDs 2 are placed aligned and they are of different colours, particularly they are red, green and blue, and they are alternated to each other, so that it is possible to lighten with any desired colour from these primary colours.
The frontal face 3 also comprises opaque material that reflects the light, forming a margin 5, that is wider than the side placed adjacent to the side face 4 lightened by said LEDs 2.
If whished, the lightning device of the present invention can be modular, i.e. several transparent plates 1 can be joined to each other, forming a single device.
As a non-limitative example the dimensions of said transparent plate 1 are reported.
Said dimensions are:
- Height: 660 mm.
- Width: 95 mm.
- Thickness: 8 mm. - Maximum width of the margin of the frontal face: 18 mm.
It is apparent that the dimensions of said transparent plate 1 can be any if the desired lightning level is obtained. As stated previously, with the device of the present invention a desired lightning is obtained in about
2 meters, and the user does not see the light points.
Furthermore, the device of the present invention is extremely light, and can be adapted easily to another elements. E.g. it is a device suitable for applications in wall lights, modular panels, ceiling roses, chrome therapy and architectural lightning.
Even though reference is made to a specific embodiment of the invention, it is apparent for a person skilled in the art that the described lighting device is susceptible of numerous variations and modifications, and that all the details cited can be substituted by other technically equivalent ones, without departing from the scope of protection defined by the attached claims.
