Abstract

A barrier layer, e.g. an electrically permeable layer such as a hydrogel layer (30) is provided on electrodes (50) of a dielectrophoretic device for the purpose of preserving the viability of cells and in particular preventing electric field-induced cell damage and lysis. The barrier layer provides a physical barrier that keeps the cells at a certain distance from the surface of the electrodes, where the electric field has the highest intensity. In contrast to an insulating layer, the hydrogel layer is essentially permeable to the electric field. The electric field on the surface of the layer is therefore still sufficient for the dielectrophoretic manipulation of the cells such as trapping the cells in a field cage. The device can be integrated into Lab-on-chip (LOC) microsystems.
