Description

METHODS OF USE QF INFORMATION
[0001] This invention relates to methods of use of information
[0002] In this specification the terms set forth below have the following meanings :- "primary provider" means a party which provides primary data;
"secondary provider" means a party which provides primary data for access to readers;
"processor" means a party that provides processed data;
"curious reader" means a party who accesses the primary data out of curiosity and takes no action in relation thereto; "involved reader" means a party who accesses the primary data and provides feedback to the processor regarding the primary data;
"interested reader" is a party who requires access to the processed data,
"registered reader" is a party who registers with the primary provider so as to obtain regular reports of the primary data therefrom; and "specific reader" is a party who requires processed data relating to specified subject matter.
[0003] According. to one aspect of the invention there is provided a method whereby a primary provider and a processor, who conveniently is the same party as the primary party, assists one of a number of secondary providers to advertise effectively, the method comprising the primary provider providing sections of information which the secondary providers can publish in such a way that readers can access such information; and the processor acquiring knowledge of (i) which sections of the information a particular reader finds of interest, and (ii) which of the said second providers provided the information that reader accessed to indicate that it is of interest to him (which said secondary provider is hereinafter called "the accessed provider"); and sends to that particular reader further information about the said section of the information accompanied by advertising matter of the accessed provider. Thus the advertising matter can be sent to a precisely targeted party.
[0004] The secondary providers have web sites on which the said sections of the information may be published or which provide a link by actuation of which the said sections of information may be accessed.
[0005] Preferably the information is accompanied by a questionnaire (hereinafter called "the information questionnaire") relating to the particular section of the information accessed by the reader and wherein a processor which is conveniently the primary provider can acquire knowledge of the answers to the information questionnaire and processes such answers to provide processed data. The information questionnaire is preferably accompanied by a further questionnaire (hereinafter called "the demographic questionnaire") relating to the reader and wherein the processor can acquire knowledge of the answers to the demographic questionnaire and processes such answers to provide additional data to form more complete processed data.
[0006] The primary provider preferably provides the secondary providers with different sections of information at specific intervals such as once a day.
[0007] The secondary provider provides information means, which is conveniently in the form of a questionnaire, whereby a registered reader may indicate that he wishes to obtain regular reports of the said information and wherein the primary provider can obtain such indication so as to act appropriately. The secondary provider may preferably additionally provide information means, also preferably in the form of a questionnaire, whereby a specific reader may indicate that he wishes to obtain such parts of the said information as may relate to specific subject matter and wherein the primary provider can obtain such indication so as to act appropriately.
[0008] All the steps herein stated are carried out electronically, with the intervention of the internet where appropriate, with information being provided by e- mail to the interested, registered or specific readers in response to their requests.
[0009] The sections of information each preferably comprise description of the contents of a patent specification, preferably being a specification of a patent application published on a specific date.
[0010] An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example.
[0011] In this embodiment an operator who is the primary provider accesses certain information which would be of interest to a certain section of the populace. In this case the information is about inventions that are described in the specifications of
PCT patent applications which that section of the populace might be interested in acquiring or licensing from the inventor. The primary provider considers the patent specifications published over a certain period, normally one week, by the International Bureau of WIPO. The primary provider selects from these patent specifications those which relate to the inventions of individual inventors as these are more likely to be available to members of that section of the populace who are likely to be interested in acquiring or licensing such inventions. Having selected the appropriate specifications, the primary provider will assemble, in a user friendly manner, information about the inventions described in the specifications together with other essential information in relation thereto. This information will, if appropriate, use illustrations if necessary and ) the primary provider may provide one or more illustrations which are easy to read (for example being perspective views; colours may be used to enhance the readability of the illustrations). The information about a selected number (usually four) of the inventions is arranged in a publishable format. This constitutes the primary data.
[0012] The primary data is intended for publication on a publication date and subsequent versions of the primary data is published on successive publication dates.
In this embodiment the publication dates are consecutive days (excluding public holidays and weekends if desired).
[0013] The primary provider provides the primary data to a secondary provider which has a website that many members of the public seek to access. A typical secondary provider would be a newspaper such as The New York Times, a bank or a service provider which has such a website. In fact a large number of secondary providers may be enrolled to provide this primary data. A section of that website is selected in which to publish the primary data. The secondary provider publishes the appropriate primary data on its website on the publication date. Such publication may be part of the website but preferably is accessed through a link available on a banner provided in a suitable position on the web-site.
[0014] Also published with the primary data is a request to give feedback relating to one or more of the inventions. The request incorporates a questionnaire (hereinafter called the "information questionnaire") to be completed by the involved reader. The questionnaire seeks the views of the involved reader in relation to one or more selected inventions as to whether the idea has market potential. The information required would be in the form of an answer to a multiple choice question with answers that indicate (i)
) definitely yes, (ii) probably yes, (iii) probably no and (iv) certainly no. An additional questionnaire (hereinafter called the "demographic questionnaire") is provided for the interested viewer to provide personal demographic details such as age, gender, education, involvement in the arts to which the invention relates, geographic location etc. A return time for the feedback is specified. In this embodiment the return time is a specified time on an internationally recognised time zone such as Greenwich Mean
Time on the publication date.
[0015] To facilitate processing of the information given in answer to the information and demographic questionnaires, the feedback must be given in a specific format. Once the aforesaid answers are entered, the information is passed to a processor. Together with this information, data will be sent to the processor identifying the reader and the secondary provider whose website was accessed by the reader (hereinafter called "the accessed provider"). The processor, which in this embodiment is also the primary provider (but need not be), assembles the information and processes it to provide the processed data. The processed data indicates the following:- the number of respondents, the percentage of respondents who think the invention is certainly viable, is certainly not viable, probably viable and probably not viable (which information may be illustrated graphically in a pie chart and/or a bar chart and/or any other desired graphical representation so as to be easily comprehendible by the reader).
This information would serve to provide important factors to the reader who is endeavouring to decide whether the viability of the invention is such that it is to his advantage to involve himself in this invention. In addition the processed data will give the result of the answers to the demographic questionnaire, again preferably graphically. This will enable the reader to assess the weight to be given to the processed data.
[0016] A further questionnaire asks the reader if he wishes to access readers' views about the invention giving statistics from various readers. This questionnaire pops up when the reader has given the answers mentioned above. The interested reader will answer the question positively.
[0017] Once the return time has passed, the processor will assemble the data supplied in response to the questionnaires to provide a document containing processed data. This document comprises an analysis of the answers to the information and demographic questionnaires. The document is arranged to carry advertising matter provided by the accessed provider. The document may also carry advertisements provided by e.g. Google. The document is sent to the interested reader by e-mail. The reader thus receives a "pamphlet" containing information in which he is interested and which carries the advertising matter of the accessed provider. Because the reader is receiving information in which he is interested, the advertising matter reaches the audience that the advertiser desires and for this reason tends to be very effective.
[0018] The web page will also provide two additional question sections that the readers can select. The first section (hereinafter referred to as the "registered questionnaire") appeals to the registered reader. It requires actuation if the registered reader wants regular information about all the inventions published each day as the primary data. The second section (hereinafter referred to as the "specific questionnaire") appeals to the specific reader. It requires actuation if the user requires ZA2008/000126
desires to be informed about inventions in specific fields of industry. On actuation of the specific questionnaire, a pop-up screen gives an indication of the various fields of the industry to be selected. After the desired field or fields have been selected the user will choose when the information is to be sent to him - usually a specific day each week or on a specific day each fortnight.
[0019] When the registered reader selects the registered questionnaire, the provider will send an e-mail to him each day. The e-mail will comprise all of the primary data being published that day on the website. The registered reader may complete the information questionnaire in respect of one or more of the inventions. The primary data will be supplemented each day with the processed data of the inventions for which the registered user completed the questionnaire on the previous day. All the information will be produced on a document carrying advertising matter of the selected provider. This document will be sent on an e-mail to the specific reader on the selected day of the week (or other period selected). The information sent to a specific reader will include the primary data and the processed data. Because this information would be supplied after the time for responding to the information question that has expired the selected reader would not be supplying with the information questionnaire. The information sent to the specific reader will also be sent on a document carrying the advertising matter of the second provider.
[0020] If desired a link can be provided on the information sent to any one of the readers so that that reader can become a secondary provider.
[0021] In use, the banner abovementioned will be published on the website of the secondary provider. The readers who might be interested in the information about inventions will access the appropriate link through the banner on this website. The curious reader will read the data but will take no action in relation thereto. The involved reader will answer the information questionnaire in relation to one or more inventions but will not request to be sent the processed data. The interested reader will j answer the information questionnaire and will request that he be sent the processed data in relation to any invention in respect of which he has completed the information questionnaire. The registered reader will complete the registered question and will, if he desires, answer the information questionnaire in respect of one or more inventions. On the next day he will receive an e-mail containing the primary data for that day
3 together with the processed data for the invention in respect of which he answered the information questionnaire. This will be repeated for as long as the provider desires. The specific reader will complete the specific questionnaire. He will thereafter receive the primary data as well as the processed data for all inventions in the fields of art that he has selected will be sent to him by e-mail on the days which he has designated.
5 [0022] The program may specify that the information given to the registered and specific readers will be given for a finite length of time, for example one year. These readers can thereafter re-register.
[0023] As mentioned above all information sent to the various readers is contained on documents that bear the advertising matter of the accessed provider. :0 Because the reader is receiving information in which he is interested, the advertising matter reaches the audience that the accessed provider desires and for this reason tends to be very effective. [0024] The invention is not limited to the precise details hereinbefore described.
The information may relate to other matters.
