Definitions

  • the present invention relates to action figures and similar play objects and in particular an integrated audio device built into a component of an action figure, said integrated audio device being able to record, download, store and play audio files.
  • Action figures are defined in Wikipedia as possible character figurines often, made of plastic and other materials, and often based upon a movie, comic book, video game or television program. Redressable action figures are sometimes referred to as action dolls. Action figures while targeted as toys have over the years become collectors' items. As such, action figures are now being marketed to adults collectors. Manufacture of Action figures have therefore become sophisticated in view of the maturity of the collectors.
  • Action figures have been filed since the first action figure "G. I. Joe" ⁇ was marketed in 1964. Action figures are approximately 11 /4 inches high. Action figures portray the character realistically through use of specialised dresses or costumes and interchangeable parts and attention to details. Although action figures have been marketed at 3% inches high and 6V2 inches, generally collectible action figures tend to remain at 11 V-! inches, for greater details. Such collectible action figures are marketed towards adults and intended for display rather than as play objects.
  • US Publication No. US 2006/0292965 discusses a toy action figure with movable limbs operable through a gear assembly and by use of a manual actuator.
  • the invention also has features of audio output to generate sounds. Due to the size constraint, the gear assembly and actuator are situated in the inner space of the body of the action figure, thereby leaving very little space for any device to be built inside the body of the action figure.
  • the speakers for the audio output has to be positioned with any suitable portion of the body, head and/or limbs.
  • What is desirable is an action figure with features to record and playback audio files, and speakers all built into the action figure. What is even more desirable is having additional features to include storage memory capability so as to allow fresh audio files to be stored into the storage memory and even for such audio files to be down loaded and uploaded into the storage memory. What is more desirable is the feature of a communications link which would allow users to download and upload audio data files with ease. What is more desirable is the action figure to include rechargeable batteries thereby providing power replenishment for continuous enjoyment of the action figure.
  • the inventor Due to the characteristic of the action figure to have movable upper torso, the inventor has found that the most suitable place for making such an integrated component containing all the features is the 'core' of the action figure, being the abdomen of the action figure. This is because the other portion of the action figure, being the chest usually contains the movable mechanism or actuators for the action figure.
  • abdominal component of an action figure is usually smaller in dimension and therefore building all the audio features into such a small component requires inventive step.
  • the inventor has proposed a series of action figures wherein the abdomen of the action figure has a built-in integrated audio device to record, store and play audio files, storage memory, speakers, source for power and communication with a computer, with associated switches and buttons for activation of said audio recording and playback device.

Description

INTEGRATED AUDIO DEVICE FOR ACTION FIGURES AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURE THEREOF
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present invention relates to action figures and similar play objects and in particular an integrated audio device built into a component of an action figure, said integrated audio device being able to record, download, store and play audio files.
BACKGROUND ART
Dolls with audio devices are known. Patents filed for inventions in respect of such dolls have included features of devices for recording and playback, speakers, communication with personal computers and audio files storage capability. Such devices can be built into dolls because the size of such dolls and the dimensions of the dolls' body can usually accommodate such devices. However, due to the space to be taken up by incorporating all these devices into a doll, the devices would be built into whichever part of the doll with the capacity to include such devices. It is not unusual for such dolls to have speakers and other devices to be built in separate portions of the doll. As such, manufacturing and assembly of such dolls tend to be inefficient. There is a need for a more efficient way to make such dolls by manufacturing an integrated doll component with all the devices built into the component and to be manufactured as a module to be fitted into any doll.
However, there is a type of similar doll-like toys referred to as "action figures". Action figures are defined in Wikipedia as possible character figurines often, made of plastic and other materials, and often based upon a movie, comic book, video game or television program. Redressable action figures are sometimes referred to as action dolls. Action figures while targeted as toys have over the years become collectors' items. As such, action figures are now being marketed to adults collectors. Manufacture of Action figures have therefore become sophisticated in view of the maturity of the collectors.
Patents for Action figures have been filed since the first action figure "G. I. Joe" © was marketed in 1964.
The patents filed for action figures cover movements of parts of the action figures. US Publication No. US 2006/0292965 discusses a toy action figure with movable limbs operable through a gear assembly and by use of a manual actuator. The invention also has features of audio output to generate sounds. Due to the size constraint, the gear assembly and actuator are situated in the inner space of the body of the action figure, thereby leaving very little space for any device to be built inside the body of the action figure. The speakers for the audio output has to be positioned with any suitable portion of the body, head and/or limbs.
Once an action figure collectible is sold, the action figure remains in the condition it was sold. In view of the market for action figure collectibles, the inventor realise a need for an action figure which could always remain up to date with sound bites, thus offering variety in enjoyment of the action figure.
What is desirable is an action figure with features to record and playback audio files, and speakers all built into the action figure.
What is also desirable is the action figure to have buttons for playback, adjustment of sound volume, switches and the like for independent playback of audio files without connection to a personal computer or to the Internet.
What is most desirable is if ail these features in the action figure can be made into an integrated audio device and manufactured as one fully integrated component of the action figure so that this integrated audio device cum component can then be assembled with the other components of the action figure such as head, chest and limbs, to form the action figure and in so doing, save time and improve productivity.
Due to the characteristic of the action figure to have movable upper torso, the inventor has found that the most suitable place for making such an integrated component containing all the features is the 'core' of the action figure, being the abdomen of the action figure. This is because the other portion of the action figure, being the chest usually contains the movable mechanism or actuators for the action figure.
However the abdominal component of an action figure is usually smaller in dimension and therefore building all the audio features into such a small component requires inventive step.
The inventor has proposed a series of action figures wherein the abdomen of the action figure has a built-in integrated audio device to record, store and play audio files, storage memory, speakers, source for power and communication with a computer, with associated switches and buttons for activation of said audio recording and playback device.
By housing all the components for audio recording, storing and playback, source for power and communication, speakers and buttons for activation of said recording and playback device in a component of the action figure, manufacturing and assembly of the action figure is simplified. The action figure consisting of all the components such as head, limbs, upper chest and abdomen (with integrated audio device in built therein) can be manufactured separately and all the components assembled to form the entire action figure.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
A brief description is made herein to the manufacturing process for an action figure, which is well known to the art.
After the clay sculpted prototype is approved, a master mold is made from the finished clay prototype. Some action figures are simply molded from a single piece of plastic resin (such as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene or ABS). Softer plastics such as polypropylene and polyethylene are commonly used to mold smaller accessory and costume pieces. For action figures with greater articulation, each moveable part is molded as a separate component. Such action figures are also designed with a hollow chest; abdomen and solid vinyl limbs. The entire action figure is built with swivel joints that allow the limbs to move or rotate.
The action figure contains small gears and washers in the joints of the arms and legs that allow the action figure to be bent to any angle and to hold that pose. Movement of the hands and legs are carried out through use of actuators centrally fitted into the chest of the action figure.
This is because the chest is usually the most ideal location for the actuators due to space requirements and also due to mechanical constraints. As a result of the size and limited internal space for any kind of electronic circuitry to be built into such action figures, action figures have always lack a recording and playback feature of bigger dolls. An example of action figures with such constraints is the action figure discussed in US Publication No. US 2006/0292965. The toy action figure has movable limbs operable through a gear assembly and by use of a manual actuator. The action figure also has basic audio output to generate sounds. Due to the size constraint, the gear assembly and actuator has to be located in the inner space of the abdomen of the action figure. Given the very little space, manufacturers of action figures face a problem in building a complete recording device with playback feature, speakers, data memory, PCB with programmable software. Since some action figures are collectibles, there is a demand from adult collectors for action figures with better quality speakers and other features.
However, having good sound system would not suffice if the audio recordings cannot be changed over time. Further, such devices would not be useful if it does not come with power source. Again, for power source, due to the small size, normal batteries would not be acceptable. There is a need for rechargeable batteries, since replacing batteries would also be a problem, due to the small size of the action figure. Along with rechargeable batteries is a requirement for a source for input of power. Also with a source for input of power, is a requirement for the recording and playback device to have the capability to download audio files so that the audio files can always be changed and replaced with new audio files.
The inventor has proposed fitting an integrated audio recording and playback device into a component making up an action figure. An action figure is made by fitting a head, chest, abdomen, lower body, hands and legs together. The inventor proposes the component of an action figure best suited for building an integrated audio device into it is the abdominal portion of the action figure. The abdominal portion is the core of the action figure from which the upper chest and legs are articulated. Although the abdominal portion is ideally suited for building an integrated audio recording and playback feature, the inventor has to overcome the problem of size. Miniaturisation of all parts alone would not suffice. A novel approach is to build an integrated audio device so that it can be operated independently, with rechargeable battery, speakers and at the same time be fitted into a small portion of the action figure, being the abdomen component of the action figure.
With reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings, Fig 1 shows an outline of a typical action figure. Such action figures are approximately 11 Vz inches high. The integrated audio device (10) is built into a component of the action figure, preferably the abdomen component. Although the integrated audio device (10) inside the action figure is operable by pressing the play/function buttons (20) on the abdomen of the action figure, wireless operation is preferred. Some action figures which are collectors' items are often displayed by collectors. Frequent handling of the action figure would introduce much wear and tear and therefore a wireless solution is preferred. Operation commands such as on/off switch (22) and activation of play/function buttons (20) would be transmitted by a Bluetooth enabled remote control (24) to the integrated audio device (10) in the action figure. By using the Bluetooth enabled remote control (24), audio files can similarly be downloaded to the integrated audio device (10) from a Bluetooth enabled computer (32) including mobile devices. Therefore the only periodic handling of the action figure would be reduced to charging of the rechargeable battery (34) in the integrated audio device (10).
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the features of the inventive device. The audio device can save or record audio files for playback. By incorporating an audio device with microphone (28), speakers (30) and other features described herein to form an integrated audio device (10) and fit it into an component of the action figure, which in this case is the abdomen, manufacturing and assembly of the action figure is simplified. The integrated audio device cum component (1 ) can be manufactured separately as the abdomen component. The integrated audio device (10) will be completely operable on its own to record, store and play audio files, without the necessity to connect other devices in other components of the action figure. However, this should not limit the inclusion of other devices in other components of the action figure and the possibility of connecting these other devices to some devices in the integrated audio device (10) such as rechargeable battery (34).
The essential features for an integrated audio device cum component (1 ) would include the following:-
a device to record and playback audio data files (54); a storage memory (56) for audio data files and program software; one or more speakers (30); a port for supply of power from an external source (40); a port for transmission of data (42); a rechargeable battery (34); a panel for play/function buttons (20) to operate record, store and play audio files
The preferred transmission means for the invention is wireless transmission of audio files and operation of the integrated audio device (10). By using wireless transmission, remote control (24) of the integrated audio device
(10) is possible. In the preferred embodiment, the port for transmission of data uses wireless transmission with a Bluetooth enabled device (42) in the integrated audio device (10) communicating with a Bluetooth enabled device (42) in a remote control (24) to operate both the integrated audio device (10) and a computer (32) for transfer of audio files from a computer
(32) to the integrated audio device (10).
Another embodiment uses wired data transmission with an USB cable (38). In this case, the wired data transmission port is an L)SB port (44) which also serves as the power port (40) for power supply (hereinafter also referred to as "data cum power port"). Use of the USB port (44) and USB cable (38) will save valuable space in the abdomen component of the action figure, reduce costs and also simplify the manufacturing process. Reference is now made to Fig. 3, 4, and 5.
Fig. 3 shows a front view of the integrated audio device cum component (1 ) of the action figure. The front has a series of small openings for sound from the speakers (32) to be transmitted outwards. Another series of small openings at the side is for picking up of sounds for recording using a microphone (28), which is built into the integrated audio device (10), with the microphone (28) directly behind the series of small openings.
Fig. 4 shows a view from one side of the integrated audio device cum component (1 ). Shown in this view is a data cum power port (40) for wired data transmission and connection to a power supply. The data cum power port (40) uses a "B" connection for connection to an USB cable (38). The same "B" connection of the USB cable (38) can serve to supply electrical energy from an external power source to recharge the rechargeable battery (34).
In the preferred embodiment, a wireless data transmission port such as a Bluetooth enabled device (42) in the integrated audio device (10) will pick up signals from another Bluetooth enabled device (42) in a remote control (24) having a panel of play/function buttons (20) and other command buttons such as on/off switch (22).
Fig. 5 shows a view from the other side of the integrated audio device cum component (1 ). This view discloses one or more LED (26) and an on/off switch (22). The LED (26) gives indication of the status of the integrated audio device (10). The "on/off" switch (22) allows the collector of the action figure to switch on or switch off the integrated audio device (10).
Detailed description of the building of the integrated audio device cum component (1 ) is given herein, by way of illustration. The illustration given herein should not be limiting as to the method of forming the integrated audio device cum component (1 ) nor arrangement of parts making up the integrated audio device (10) nor layout of the various parts in the integrated audio device cum component (1 ). The abdomen shell, just like the other components of the action figure, is formed by the process of molding plastic resin such as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. In the case of the abdomen shell, which is then fitted with the integrated audio device (10) and speakers (30), the abdomen shell consists of two portions, a front portion and a back portion. Both the front portion and back portion are shaped to receive the front and back faces of the integrated audio device ( 10), speakers (30), microphone(28), Bluetooth enabled device (42), data cum power port (40) for connection to USB cable (38), LED (26), play/function buttons (20) and on/off switch (22). In place of the Bluetooth enabled device (42), an infra red device (46) can be substituted for operation of the integrated audio device (10) using an Infra red enabled remote control (48).
When the front portion and back portion are joined together it then forms the abdomen of the action figure. The front portion can be fitted with certain parts and the back portion can be fitted with the remaining parts. The method of forming the front and back portion of the abdomen shell will not be described herein, being known in the art. However, the front and back portion of the shell when fitted together will form the abdomen component of the action figure.
The integrated audio device ( 10) is assembled from these:-
a device to record, store and play audio data files (54); a storage memory (56) for audio data files and program software; one of more speakers (30); a microphone (28); a port for power and wired data transmission (40); a port for wireless data transmission being a Bluetooth enabled device
(42); a rechargeable battery (34); a panel for play/function buttons (20) to operate device to record, store and play audio files In place of the Bluetooth wireless transmission embodiment, other embodiments could include a FM radio receiver (not shown in the drawings) which can be a source for recording of audio files or an Infra red sensor (50) to receive commands from the infra red remote control (48).
The integrated audio device (10) is assembled separately from the abdomen shell. The abdomen shell consists of the front and back portions. The inner face of each portion is formed or shaped with a cavity for insertion of the integrated audio device (10) and has holes or openings, as follows:-
Front
Holes for transmission of sound from speakers (30)
Back
Play/Function buttons (20)
One Side
Data cum Power port (40) to connect an USB cable to computer (32) for wired data transmission and power supply
Other Side
On/Off Switch (22) with Power on/Power off LED (26)
Since the Bluetooth enabled device (42) is wireless, no opening is provided for signal transmission from a remote control (24) or audio files from a computer (32). Likewise, if a FM radio (36) is used, no opening is provided for transmission of signals.
Where an infra red remote control (48) is used, provision has to be made for reception of infra red signals, leading to a receiver circuit. Fig. 6 shows a back view of the integrated audio device cum component (1 ) of the action figure. At the back of the integrated audio device cum component ( 1 ), are the play/function buttons (20).
Description of the features of the play/function buttons (20) and how these are operated is given herein by way of illustration of the various features.
Button 1 - Activates on/off Switch (22) Button 2 - Sound recording play/function buttons (20) Button 3 - Recording device (54) Button 4 - Volume up Button 5 - Volume down
The on/off switch (22) is used to switch on the recording and playback device (54) in the action figure.
Short release: Time after pressing button until release is less than 1 second.
Long release: Time after pressing button until release is more than 2 seconds.
On/off: Long release/switch on (green light) Playing (green light blinking) Pause (green light steady) If during pause, no processing, the device will automatically shut down in 20 seconds
Volume Up: Short release (one song up)
Long release (recording into the player mode)
Volume Down: Short release (one song down)
Long release (recording into the player mode)
PLAY/MP3button: The device will automatically boot into the MUS (Musical) mode, and plays songs in MP3 format. Green light will continue flashing. Short press: Pause song
Long press: Shut down power saving mode
PREV/NEXT button: Short press - up/down song selection
PREV/NEXT button: Long press - increase or decrease volume
The play/function buttons (20) can be operated by pressing the selected button at the back of the action figure.
However the preferred method is wireless transmission of signals from the Blue tooth enabled remote control (24) to operate the integrated audio device (10), including switching on/off (22), operation of play/function buttons (20) as well as communication with a computer (32).
By using a remote control (24), the action figure will be able to produce sounds/music/speech at a distance. Since many action figures are put on display for enjoyment by collectors, the use of a remote control (24) to operate the play/function buttons (20) will allow collectors to enjoy the action figure without regularly handling it, thus ensuring the action figure remains in pristine condition. The use of a Bluetooth enabled device (42) in the remote control (24) will also allow the collector to switch the integrated audio device (10) in the action figure on or off without handling the action figure.
Fig. 7A and Figure 7B are illustrative layouts of an embodiment of integrated audio device (10) using wireless transmission with a Bluetooth enabled remote control (24).
Fig. 8A and Figure 8B are illustrative layouts of an embodiment of integrated audio device (10) using wired transmission with an Infra Red remote control (48).
Fig. 9A and Figure 9B are illustrative layouts of an embodiment of integrated audio device (10) using wired transmission with an Infra Red remote control (48) with FM radio (36) and a FM radio receiver (not shown in the drawings) in the integrated audio device (10).
With reference to Fig. 7A and Fig 7B, the integrated audio device (10) consists of a recordable and playback audio device (54) and storage memory (56) with these:-
a multi control unit circuit (60); a memory circuit (62); a microphone circuit (64); a play/function circuit (66); a LED circuit (68); an AMP circuit (70); a power circuit (72); and a data transmission circuit. (74)
The data transmission circuit (74) could be connected to a wireless device or wired device. If wireless data transmission is provided, a Bluetooth circuit (76) has to be included in the integrated audio device (10). If a wired data transmission is provided, an USB circuit (80) has to be included in the integrated audio device (10).
If remote control (24) using infra red control is provided, there is a circuit for an infra red sensor (50) in the integrated audio device (10), as shown in Fig. 8A and Fig 8B and also Fig 9A and 9B.
If a FM radio (36) is provided, as shown in Fig 9A and Fig 9B, a FM receiver circuit (not shown in Fig 9A and Fig 9B) is included in the integrated audio device (10).
While the integrated audio device (10) on its own may be independently operated, additional devices have been built into the integrated audio device cum component (1 ) including :-
a microphone (28); a memory to store audio data files and program software (56); a port for power and wired data transmission (40); a port for wireless data transmission (42); a rechargeable battery (34); a panel for play/function buttons (20) to operate, record and play audio files; and
LED (26) status indicators
to form an integrated audio device (10) with capability to record, store and play audio files either from a recording via a microphone (28) in the abdomen component or via audio files from a computer (32) using wired transmission such as an USB cable (38) or wireless transmission such as a Bluetooth enabled device(42).
A rechargeable battery (34) and data cum power port (40) are also added onto the integrated audio device (10) and fitted into the inner shell of the abdomen component, said data cum power port (40) having an opening in the external shell for connection to an USB cable (38).
If a remote control (24) is used, then the integrated audio device (10) would have to include means for communication with the remote control (24). The remote control (24) can communicate with the integrated audio device (10) in wireless mode either by Bluetooth enabled device (42) or infra red device (46).
For wireless embodiment, using Bluetooth enabled device (42), the collector is able not only to remotely operate the integrated audio device (10), but remotely download audio files from a computer (32) using another Bluetooth enabled device (42). Using Bluetooth enabled device (42) would offer almost hands-free operation and enjoyment of the action figure except for the occasional recharging of the rechargeable battery (34).
If a FM radio receiver is fitted inside the integrated audio device (10), the FM radio receiver may allow recording of audio files in the integrated audio device (10). Speakers (30) for output of audio files during playback are then fitted, said speakers (30) facing the holes in the front of the abdomen shell of the integrated audio device cum component (1 ).
A panel for play/function buttons (20) is fitted into the integrated audio device (10), the play/function buttons (20) being located at the back of the abdomen of the action figure. Use of remote control (24), with wireless transmission devices like Bluetooth enabled device (42) or infra red device (46) allow remote operation of the integrated audio device (10) when the action figure is on display. Use of remote control (24) would also reduce handling of the action figure, keeping handling of the action figure to a minimum, thereby maintaining the condition and value of the action figure.
A rechargeable battery (34) is also connected to the integrated audio device (10). The integrated audio device (10) is then fitted into the inner cavity of the abdomen component, with the panel with play/function buttons (20), facing the back of the shell. The speakers (30) are then connected to the integrated audio device (10), with the speakers (30) facing the holes formed at the front of the shell. The LED (26), wireless transmission device {either Bluetooth enabled device (42)} or Infra red device (46) and on/off switch (20) are similarly fitted through the appropriate holes or locations and connected to the integrated audio device (10). The data cum power port (40) is then connected to the integrated audio device (10), with an opening for insertion of an USB cable (38).
The integrated audio device (10), speakers, wireless transmission device such as Bluetooth enabled device (42) or FM radio (36) and other devices (according to the embodiments discussed herein) are assembled and fitted into the front and back portions of the abdomen component and joined together to form the integrated audio device cum component (1 ) for the action figure.
By molding the component as the front and back portions of the abdomen for the action figure, each portion with an inner cavity shaped for fitting of the integrated audio device (10), rechargeable battery (34), Bluetooth enabled device (42) or infra red device (46) or FM radio (36) (as appropriate for the embodiment), microphone (28), speakers (30) and data cum power port (40), the integrated audio device cum component (1 ) for the action figure is self contained and functions as a fully integrated audio device (10) to record, store and play audio files. Since the inner cavity of the abdomen component of the action figure has been molded and shaped for fitting of these devices, the devices are securely fitted for robust handling. With the addition of a rechargeable battery (34) and transmission means to a computer (32), the collector of the action figure would have endless choices of audio files of the character portrayed by the action figure. In this manner, the action figure will not be dated, playing only what has been stored in its memory device (56) at time of manufacture.
Creation of audio files
A brief description of the process of creating audio files is given again to illustrate the workings of the invention.
The inclusion of audio files in an action figure is for enjoyment of the action figure collector. Often, such action figures are based on movies or TV series or sports personalities. An audio file containing segments from the movie would enhance the enjoyment of the action figure. Likewise, an audio recording of a sports personality would enhance the enjoyment of the display of the action figure.
The preferred method for communications with the integrated audio device cum component (1 ) in the action figure is use of wireless means such as Bluetooth enabled devices (42) or FM radio (36). The other option is directly pressing the play/function buttons (20) which are at the back of the abdomen component of the action figure.
Whichever the method of communication, reference to the play/function buttons (20) in the process of creating audio files is the same. Wireless transmission of audio files would include transmission using Bluetooth enabled device (42) in the integrated audio device (10) and another Bluetooth enabled device (42) in a computer (32). If a FM radio receiver is built into the integrated audio device (10), audio files can also be recorded directly from the FM radio (36).
An audio file can be created by the collector making a recording by speaking to the built-in microphone (28) in the abdomen of the action figure. To do this, the collector will move the " on/off " switch (22) on the electrical power to a "On position" for operation of the integrated audio device (10). The LED (26) will turn on and after the integrated audio device (10) has undergone a self check of the system, the LED (26) will show a steady green light. The collector will then operate the play/function buttons (20):-
Button 2 - Sound recording function keys Button 3 - Recording key
After recording, the collector can play the audio file thus created by operating the function buttons:-
PLAY/MP3button - The device will automatically plays the audio file in MP3 format. Green light will continue flashing.
Short press - Pause playback
Long press - Shut down power saving mode
PREV/NEXT button - Short press - up/down audio file selection
PREV/NEXT button - Long press - increase or decrease volume
An audio file can also be downloaded by the collector searching the Internet or his computer (32) for an appropriate audio file. The collector will firstly switch the "on/off" switch (22) on the action figure to an "On position" to operate the integrated audio device (10). The LED (26) will turn on and after the integrated audio device (10) have undergone a self check of the system, the LED (26) will show a steady green light.
Having selected the correct audio file, the collector will send the audio file via the Bluetooth enabled device (42) in the computer (32) to the Bluetooth enabled device (42) in the action figure to be saved in the memory of the integrated audio device (10).
If the download is by an USB cable (38), the collector connects the USB cable (38) between the computer (32) and the data cum power port (40) in the action figure, inserting the "A" connection of the USB cable (38) to the computer (32) and the "B" connection of the USB cable (38) into the data cum power port (40) in the action figure. Once the action figure is connected, the screen of the computer (32) may show the background of the movie of the action figure with instructions for transmission of audio files. Alternatively, if the appropriate software is not installed in the action figure, then only the directory of the memory in the action figure will be shown on the computer (32). Whichever the case may be, the collector may download the selected audio file onto the memory of the integrated audio device (10). The collector may also choose to delete some audio files in the memory.
Once the selected audio file has been downloaded, either using Bluetooth enabled device (42) or USB cable (38), the collector may then enjoy the fresh audio file stored in the memory of the action figure with the play/function buttons (20).
The audio files can be in MP3 file format, WMA file format, AAC file format, WAV file format or any other file format for audio files. Due to the built-in speakers (30), the sounds created in the audio file be it speech or music would be transmitted through the speakers (30) and holes in the abdomen of the action figure, with good clarity.
Due to the size of the abdomen of the action figure, and size of the integrated audio device (10), it is not practical to use normal batteries. Since the integrated audio device (10) may be used over a long period of time, a rechargeable battery (34) is a practical solution to powering the integrated audio device (10). Therefore a specially designed rechargeable battery (34) has to be made to fit the integrated audio device (10).
As such, the rechargeable battery (34) is continuously used to operate the integrated audio device (10). Over time, the energy of the rechargeable battery (34) may run low. When this happens, the LED (26) will blink to indicate "Low battery" status. Alternatively the remote control (24) will receive a signal indicating "Low Battery" status. Since the USB port (44) serves as data cum power port (40), connecting the "A" connection of the USB cable (38) to the computer (32) and the "B" connection of the USB cable (38) to the action figure will supply electrical power to the rechargeable battery (34) via the computer (32) for re-charging purpose.
The computer (32) for connection to the integrated audio device (10) in the action figure can be a personal computer, a laptop, an ultra light note book or even a PDA or mobile phone.
OTHER EMBODIMENTS
The preferred method of transmission of operation commands to the action figure is by wireless data transmission means such as Bluetooth enabled device (42) or even WiFi. Wireless data transmission would include a remote control (24) having a Bluetooth enabled device (42) or an infra red device (46). A wired data transmission embodiment using an USB connection has also been discussed. Other communication devices and wireless technologies may also be used, such as WiFi.
A FM radio receiver could also be built into the integrated audio device (10) offering one more avenue to record audio files.
While the action figure using the inventive device has been described with reference to 11 /4 inches, the inventive device can be suitably adapted for action figures of smaller sizes. While the invention was directed towards action figures, the concept of a component of a doll or toy having an integrated audio device (10) with speakers (30) would be also applicable to bigger size dolls and toys. Likewise the method of manufacturing a component for a doll or a toy having an integrated audio device (10) and speakers (30) would be applicable to assembly of dolls and toys.
The embodiments of the present invention recited herein are intended to be merely exemplary and those skilled in the art will be able to make numerous variations and modifications to it without departing from the spirit of the present invention. Similarly the illustrative layouts of the integrated audio device (10) serves to show the features of the inventive device and could be arranged differently, without limiting the scope of the invention. All such variations and modifications are intended to be within the scope of the present invention as defined by the claims appended hereto.
ADVANTAGEOUS EFFECTS OF THE INVENTION
The integrated audio device cum component (1 ) of the invention allows a component of the action figure, being the abdomen, to be made and purpose fitted, as a fully integrated audio device (10) for recording and playing of audio files.
The abdomen can thus be assembled with other parts of the action figure easily and without the need to have bits and pieces of audio device built into various components of the action figure. Manufacturing of the action figure is more streamlined and productivity improved.
The invention also allows the user to store and change the audio files in the integrated audio device (10) of the action figure, thus making the action figure up to date and more enjoyable. Invariably the value of such collectible action figures would be increased.
