Description

Invertierte oder transparente organische Solarzelle oder Photodetektor mit verbesserter Absorption Inverted or transparent organic solar cell or photodetector with improved absorption
Beschreibungdescription
The invention relates to a photoactive component, in particular an organic solar cell or a photodetector, with a layer arrangement which has an electrode and a counter electrode and a sequence of organic layers, which is arranged between the electrode and the counter electrode.
Hintergrund der ErfindungBackground of the invention
Since the demonstration of the first efficient organic solar cell with a percentage efficiency by Tang et al. In 1986 (C.W. Tang et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 48, 183 (1986)), organic materials are extensively studied for various electronic and optoelectronic devices. Organic solar cells consist of a series of thin layers, which typically have a thickness of between 1 nm and 1 μm, of organic materials which are vapor-deposited in vacuum or applied from a solution. The electrical contacting is generally carried out by transparent, semitransparent or non-transparent metal layers and / or transparent conductive oxides (TCOs) and / or conductive polymers.
The advantage of such organic-based devices over conventional inorganic-based devices, such as semiconductors such as silicon or gallium arsenide, are the sometimes extremely high optical absorption coefficients of up to 3x10 5 cm -1 , offering the possibility of low material and material cost Energy costs of producing very thin solar cells Other technological aspects include the low cost, the possibility of producing flexible large-area components on plastic films, and the almost unlimited possibilities of variation in organic chemistry. The following are some key points that explain major technical problems in the development and successful commercial exploitation; the key points are divided into two topics for a better understanding:
1.) Kontaktierung, Layout: transparente Kontakte, semitransparente Solarzellen 2.) Absorber und Energieumwandlung: Exzitonentrennung, Energieniveaus, Tandemzellen1.) contacting, layout: transparent contacts, semitransparent solar cells 2.) absorber and energy conversion: exciton separation, energy levels, tandem cells
Themengebiet 1: Elektrische Kontakte und LayoutTopic 1: Electrical Contacts and Layout
Transparente Kontakte. Transparent contacts. State of the art in organic solar cells is the use of tin-doped indium oxide ("indium tin oxide" or "ITO") as a transparent conductive base contact on the substrate, typically glass. However, ITO and other similar transparent conductive oxides (also called "TCO") have the serious disadvantage that they are brittle and can break when using a flexible substrate (Chen et al., Thin Solid Films 394, 201 (2001)). Due to the price development of indium on the world market and due to the scarcity already foreseeable, it is desirable to use alternatives. One way is to use very thin metal layers that are thin enough to allow light to pass through but thick enough to have sufficient conductivity. Developing corresponding layers is a considerable technical challenge (Meiss et al., Journal of Applied Physics 105, 063105 (2009)) and subject of current research. Nevertheless, it would be advantageous if ITO- or TCO-free solar cells could be produced.
A preferred use of transparent, thin, ITO-free electrodes would be to create "inverted", top-illuminated solar cells, where the light is introduced from the side away from the substrate, which would allow for cheaper, thinner and more flexible substrates than glass For example, using metal foil or PET film, solar cells without ITO with a transparent top electrical contact would open up new ways of marketing. Semitransparent solar cells. A potential application for solar cells could be so-called "power windows", ie windows that are semitransparent and capable of producing electricity. This application is conceivable for example for office buildings or for glazing with shading effect, whereby one could make use of the fact that not only does light reflect or absorbed, as is the case with conventional semi-transparent materials, but that the light can be directly converted to electricity production.
There are already initial approaches to the design of semitransparent solar cells (Bailey-Salzman et al., Applied Physics Letters 88, 233502 (2006); Koeppe et al., Chemistry and Sustainability 2, 309 (2009)). However, it should be noted that both groups still use indium (ITO) in their solar cell structures; furthermore, the efficiencies achieved were far too low for commercial applications (Bailey-Salzman: 0.62%, Koeppe: ca. 0.6%). ITO-free, semi-transparent organic solar cells with some interesting efficiencies have not yet been reported.

Exzitonentrennung. Exciton. A solar cell converts light energy into electrical energy. In contrast to inorganic solar cells, light does not directly generate free charge carriers in organic solar cells, but initially bound Frenkel excitons are formed, ie electrically neutral excitation states in the form of bound electron-hole pairs. These excitons can only be separated by very high electric fields or at suitable interfaces. In organic solar cells, sufficiently high fields are not available, so that all promising concepts for organic solar cells based on the exciton separation at photoactive interfaces (organic donor-acceptor interface - CW Tang, Applied Physics Letters, 48 (2), 183- 185 (1986)) or interface to an inorganic semiconductor (see B. O'Regan et al., Nature 353, 737 (1991)). This requires that excitons generated in the bulk of the organic material can diffuse to this photoactive interface. The low-recombination diffusion of excitons to the active interface thus plays a critical role in organic solar cells. In order to make a contribution to the photocurrent, therefore, in a good organic solar cell, the exciton diffusion length must at least be of the order of magnitude of the typical penetration depth of the light, so that the predominant part of the light can be used. Structurally and with regard to chemical purity, perfect organic crystals or thin films definitely fulfill this criterion. For large area applications, however, the use of monocrystalline organic materials is not possible and the production of multiple layers with sufficient structural perfection is still very difficult.
Instead of increasing the exciton diffusion length, one can also reduce the mean distance to the nearest interface. The document WO 00/33396 proposes the formation of a so-called interpenetrating network: A layer contains a colloidally dissolved substance which is distributed so as to form a network through which charge carriers can flow (percolation mechanism). The task of light absorption takes over in such a network either only one of the components or both.
US 4,127,738).The advantage of such a mixed layer is that the generated excitons only have to travel a very short distance until they reach a domain boundary where they are separated. The removal of the electrons and the holes takes place separately in the dissolved substance or in the remaining layer. Since in the mixed layer the materials are in contact with each other everywhere, it is crucial in this concept that the separate charges have a long service life on the respective material and that there are closed percolation paths for each type of charge to the respective contact from each location. With this approach, efficiencies of 2.5% could be achieved for polymer-based solar cells produced by wet-chemical agents (CJ Brabec et al., Advanced Functional Materials 11, 15 (2001)), with polymer-based tandem cells already achieving over 6% efficiency (JY Kim et al., Science 13, 222-225 (2007)). Further known approaches for realizing or improving the properties of organic solar cells are listed below: - One contact metal has a large and the other a small work function, so that with the organic layer, a Schottky barrier is formed (US 4,127,738).
- Die aktive Schicht besteht aus einem organischen Halbleiter in einem Gel oder Bindemittel (US 3,844,843, US 3,900,945, US 4,175,981 und US 4,175,982).The active layer consists of an organic semiconductor in a gel or binder (US 3,844,843, US 3,900,945, US 4,175,981 and US 4,175,982).

US 4,461,922; US 6,198,091; US 6,198,092).Arrangement of individual solar cells one above the other, so that a so-called tandem cell is formed (US 4,461,922, US 6,198,091, US 6,198,092).
- Tandemzellen können durch Verwendung von p-i-n Strukturen mit dotierten Transportschichten großer Bandlücke weiter verbessert werden (DE 103 13 232).- Tandem cells can be further improved by using p-i-n structures with doped transport layers large band gap (DE 103 13 232).
An inherent difficulty of organic solar cells is, as described above, that the exciton diffusion lengths in the organic absorber materials range from about 10 nm to 40 nm. So that the excitons do not recombine in the absorber layer and the energy is lost in the context of the solar cell, the layer thicknesses of the absorbers should be of the same order of magnitude as the exciton diffusion length. This strict limitation of the absorber layer thickness to orders of magnitude, generally well below 60 nm, always limits the absorption (and thus also photocurrent and efficiency) in an organic solar cell. Also, the above-mentioned interpenetrating networks can only partially offset this problem. It is therefore crucial that absorber materials are found which, either individually or in combination of several materials, optimally exploit a broad spectral range of the visible light despite their low maximum layer thicknesses and have strong absorption properties.
At present, in organic research and development organic solar cells, the materials of the class "metal phthalocyanines" (for example, copper phthalocyanine, CuPc, or zinc phthalocyanine, ZnPc) and fullerenes (for example, C 60 ) are commonly used, although these materials are known, easy to handle, and lightweight can be obtained, they will be only permanently no solution; which is based on the fact that on the one hand not sufficiently strong to absorb and can exploit only a narrow range of property to grouting sunlight on the other hand Accordingly, it is possible to the current state of the art with C 6 o. ZnPc can be absorbed in a wavelength range around 650-700 nm, so much of the energy of sunlight with wavelengths between 450 and 650 nm remains unused (M. Riede et al., Nanotechnology 19). 424001 (2008)). In addition, n Not all light is absorbed because the thin layers do not absorb sufficiently.
Somit lässt sich abschließend feststellen: Bei Benutzung gegenwärtiger Standardmaterialien 1.) bleibt ein weiter Wellenlängenbereich (450-650 nm, um den grünen Bereich desThus, in conclusion, using current standard materials 1.), a wide wavelength range (450-650 nm) remains around the green area of the
Spectrum)), which reduces the photocurrent 2.) the rest of the spectrum is used rather weakly 3.) is just a range of very intense light with high photon energy (450-600 nm) lost, which limits the photovoltage. Thus, it is obvious that the problem of limited exciton separation due to low exciton diffusion length will not be able to be compensated with the present absorbers and new materials will be required.
Energieniveaus. Energy levels. Another important problem area in the research and development of organic solar cells is the topic of suitable energy levels. In order that charge carriers generated can be removed efficiently, there must be no energetic barriers between the absorber materials and the electrical contacts of a solar cell. Through the pin architecture or through doped organic layers, it can be achieved to a certain extent that energy barriers can be broken down and generated electrons and holes can be well transported away (K. Walzer et al., Chemical Reviews 107 (4), 1233-1271 (2007); C. Falkenberg et al., Journal of Applied Physics 104, 034506 (2008); S. Pfützner et al., Proceedings of SPIE 6999, 69991M (2008); C. Uhrich et al., Journal of Applied Physics 104, 043107 (2008); J. Drechsel et al., Applied Physics Letters 86, 244102 (2005)). This method is now known and tested for the materials ZnPc and C 60 . However, as described above, since ZnPc and C 6 o do not have sufficiently good properties, it can also be said here that other materials are required which not only have good absorptive properties but must also have suitable energy levels, in combination with doped ones Transport layers high open circuit voltages and filling factors are guaranteed.
Tandemzellen. Tandem cells. A key issue in this context is the production of tandem, triple or generally multiple cells, which consist of a stack of multiple solar cells, so that the multiple cell through different absorber materials, each absorbing only a certain part of the spectrum, in a broad spectral range can absorb. As a result, the problem of the limited exciton diffusion length can be circumvented to a certain extent since a multiple solar cell can be seen as a layer stack of several solar cells (so-called sub-cells) in which several absorption layers can act together. As a result, significantly higher efficiencies can be achieved than with single cells. However, it is important to use several materials that have similar absorptive properties (ie absorbing similar wavelengths) that the layers also take photons away from each other and confine each other; this results from the fact that photons absorbed by a subcell are no longer available to further subcells. This problem can only be avoided if different absorbers are used, which absorb each other in different wavelength ranges complementary to each other. The tandem / multiple cell technology thus once again illustrates that a broad spectral range is necessary for efficient solar cells. Tandem / multiple cells made of the materials C 6 o and ZnPc are therefore not a solution.
In order to meet the above requirements for exciton diffusion length, energy levels and multiple cells, new absorber materials are inevitably required, which can fill the absorption gap between C 60 and ZnPc, have strong absorption and have high energy levels (Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital [HOMO], Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital [LUMO]). With the current state of the art, sufficient efficiencies are not possible that would be necessary to meet the economic and technological requirements of organic photovoltaics. Likewise, no efficient transparent solar cells have been known so far.
Current state of the art in absorber molecules in organic photovoltaics to fill the gap between C 60 and ZnPc is the subclass class of dicyanovinyl-oligothiophenes (DCVTs) (Schulz, K., et al., Advanced Materials 18, 2872 (2006)), shown in FIG 2, with R = alkyl or H. The synthesis of DCVTs, however, is complicated and fraught with some problems. In several repetitive steps, active positions of the thiophene / oligothiophene are protected or functionalized, whereby the chain is extended by one thiophene building block. In particular, the necessary purification of the compounds by sublimation is problematic because the dicyanovinyl group is sensitive to the influence of higher temperature during sublimation. This results in a loss of CH 2 = C (CN) 2 to a fragmentation of the molecule. Thus, DCVTs are, scientifically, a potential solution for the laboratory scale; For economic purposes (mass production), this class of materials is not suitable. Sanyo associates reported tetraphenyldibenzoperiflanthene as a donor material in organic solar cells (Fujishima et al., Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells 93, 1029 (2009), identical to Kanno et al., Proc. PVSEC-17). They succeeded in producing a simple solar cell consisting of the organic materials tetraphenyldibenzoperiflanthene, C 60 and 2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-l, 10-phenantroline. Due to the strong absorption of tetraphenyldibenzoperiflanthene, Fujishima and Kanno achieved an efficiency of 3.56% for 0.033 cm 2 and 2.58% for 1.60 cm 2 , although it is not clear whether the data has already been checked for spectral mismatch. Despite this result, however, it is clear that the system chosen by Fujishima and Kanno will not lead to any further increase in efficiency: in the end, the absorption of the C 6 o-tetraphenyldibenzoperiflanthene combination limits photocurrent and photovoltage; the use of doped dedicated carrier carriers would be needed to achieve higher fill factors. Single cells with Tetraphenyldibenzoperiflanthene thus do not provide a solution for the oA requirements.
It should be emphasized that the above-mentioned work by Sanyo (Fujishima et al., Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells 93, 1029 (2009), identical to Kanno et al., Proc. PVSEC-17) merely describes the "standard layout "For organic photoactive devices use: a substrate made of glass, coated with the transparent conductive material ITO .. Comparative work describing Tetraphenyldibenzoperiflanthene in inverted or semitransparent devices, do not exist so far, which is partly due to the fact that the production of functional, inverted, in particular ITO-free components is still a technical challenge that has so far not been satisfactorily solved.
The prior art in semitransparent solar cells has already been mentioned above: first experiments using conventional materials (ITO, ZnPc, C 6 o) led to functional but clearly inefficient results (Bailey-Salzman et al., Applied Physics Letters 88, 233502 (2006); Koeppe et al., Chemistry and Sustainability 2, 309 (2009)). Here, too, it can be foreseen that new absorber materials are necessary in conjunction with a modified solar cell architecture.
The object of the invention is, by using a suitable, easily synthesized, thermally stable material in semitransparent or top-illuminated solar cells, to meet the requirements stated above in both subject areas for achieving higher efficiencies by exploiting a broad spectral range,

Erfindungsgemäß wird diese Aufgabe gelöst durch ein organisches photoaktives Bauelement, insbesondere Solarzelle oder Photodetektor, das aus mehreren Schichten aufgebaut ist, wobei das Bauelement eine semitransparente oder transparente Elektrode auf der dem Substrat abgewandten Seite enthält und eine weitere Elektrode auf der Substratseite enthält, die nichttransparent, semitransparent oder transparent sein kann, und wobei zumindest eine der organischen Schichten zumindest eine Diindeno[l,2,3-cd:r,2',3'- lmjperylen- Verbindung der allgemeinen FormelAccording to the invention, this object is achieved by an organic photoactive component, in particular a solar cell or photodetector, which is composed of several layers, wherein the component contains a semitransparent or transparent electrode on the side facing away from the substrate and contains a further electrode on the substrate side, which is nontransparent, semitransparent or transparent, and wherein at least one of the organic layers at least one Diindeno [l, 2,3-cd: r, 2 ', 3'-lmjperylen- compound of the general formula

Hereinafter, a material corresponding to the above description will be abbreviated to "diindenoperylene compound." Advantageous embodiments are the subject of dependent subclaims, Preferred embodiments of the invention have a light transmission of up to 10% for strong shade effect, 10-50% for " Semitransparent "applications in which darkening is desired, and over 50% for almost transparent applications in eg Windows. The transmissions referred to here relate to the visible range of the light spectrum (400-800 nm) and may differ in the ultraviolet (<400 nm) and infrared (> 800 nm).
It is the object of a further invention that the mentioned diindeno [1,2,3-cd: l ', 2', 3'-lm] perylene compounds are combined particularly advantageously with doped transport layers for electrons and holes. This surprisingly shows extremely high filling factors, which are otherwise not reported in organic solar cells.
Another dependent invention are tandem solar cells with said diindeno [l, 2,3-cd: r, 2 ', 3'-lm] perylene compounds. It is to be expected that a spectral absorption can be achieved by suitable substitution, so that together with the known substance class of phthalocyanines there is no significant overlap and the two subcells do not each reduce the current of the other cells.
According to the invention, the diindenoperylene compound is used as light-absorbing material in photoactive components, in particular organic solar cells. The optical density of, for example, dibenzoperiflanthene, shown in FIG. 3, indicates good absorption centered around the green region of the visible spectrum. Other derivatives can be synthesized in such a way that their absorption is exactly adapted to the respective requirements. Concrete examples thereof are (in the order of higher to lower wavelengths) 1, 4,9,12-tetraphenyl-diindeno [cd: lm] perylene, 2,3,10,1 l -tertaethyl-1,4,9,12 tetraphenyl-diindeno [cd: lm] perylene and 2,3,10,11 -tertabutyl-l, 4,9,12-tetraphenyl-diindeno [cd: lm] perylene. These derivatives absorb at even lower wavelengths (even further shifted into the blue), as shown below in FIG. 3, so that the overlap to ZnPc can be minimized.
Preferred applications of the invention are tandem, triple or generally multi-junction solar cells in which the molecule is used as the absorber material. In the invention, it is advantageous to optimize the energy levels between the absorber layer and the electrical contact of the solar cell in a targeted manner by means of further organic layers so that high photocurrents, photovoltages and fill factors can be achieved by efficient charge transport. Advantageous applications of the invention therefore include the combination of the absorber materials with doped, non-absorbent or doped absorbent organic materials. Advantageous applications of the invention in use in tandem cells include the use of heavily doped layers as conversion contacts.

The invention is based on the surprising, experimentally gained knowledge that diindenoperylene compounds and derivatives are not only characterized by strong absorption and thermal stability, but in conjunction with heavily doped hole transport materials energy barriers can be minimized, resulting in very high fill factors. Furthermore, tandem cell experiments have shown that high photovoltages can be achieved by properly combining the spectral sensitivities of different materials. A key factor here is that the materials have appropriate band gaps to optimize absorption and energy levels.
Thus, it turns out that diindenoperylene compounds - incorporated in an appropriate material system - are suitable absorbers to construct efficient solar cells. This is underlined by good processability, thermal stability and a simple, efficient synthesis.
Wu, T. Hayama, K. K. Baldridge, A. Linden, J. S. Siegel, Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2006, 128, 6870). (J. D. Debad, J. C. Morris, V. Lynch, P. Magnus, A J.Bard, Journal of the American Chemical Society 1996, 118, 2374).The synthesis of fluoranthenes can be achieved by [4 + 2] cycloaddition of unsaturated compounds such as alkynes or alkenes to various dienes and subsequent aromatization by the influence of temperature or oxidation (W. Dilthey, G. Hurtig, Berichte der Deutschen Chemischen Gesellschaft A 1934, 67 , 2004). Another possibility for fluoranthene synthesis is transition-metal-catalyzed cyclization, for example by the Wilkinson catalyst RuCl (PPh 3 ) 2 (Y.-T. Wu, T. Hayama, KK Baldridge, A. Linden, JS Siegel, Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2006, 128, 6870). Diindenoperylene compounds and derivatives can be obtained in excellent yields by the cyclodehydrogenation of fluoranthenes (M. Wehmeier, M. Wagner, K. Müllen, Chemistry 2001, 7, 2197). In this case, oxidizing agents such as CoF 3 or FeCl 3 in organic solvents are used (for synthesis see generally Fig. 4) (P. Kovacic, FW Koch, Journal of Organic Chemistry 1963, 28, 1864). This class of compounds offers excellent thermal stability. Are examples of Diindenoperylen compounds and derivatives that melt at about 550 0 C. without decomposition found in the literature. (JD Debad, JC Morris, V. Lynch, P. Magnus, A J.Bard, Journal of the American Chemical Society 1996, 118, 2374).
Thus, diindenoperylene compounds and derivatives open up a path to efficient, cost-effective organic solar cells, solving in particular the problem that, according to the prior art, a broad spectral range remains unused in multiple solar cells. Especially promising derivatives make it possible to more precisely adapt the properties of the base molecule to individual requirements, such as, for example, energy levels of adjacent organic transport layers. As a result, a wider part of the solar spectrum can be exploited, which leads to higher photocurrents, fill factors and / or photovoltages depending on the exact solar cell configuration. In this case, diindenoperylenes and diindenoperylene derivatives according to the invention can be easily integrated into the production process of organic photodetectors and solar cells, since they are stable even at high temperatures and can be readily vaporized.

Documentation of an organic solar cell with diindenoperylene derivative (more precisely: dibenzoperiflanthene as preferred example) as absorber material in a semitransparent, ITO-free solar cell using p-doped charge carrier transport layers. The goal here was a combination of high photocurrent and high photovoltage.
A sample was prepared on glass (0) with an exciton blocking and smoothing layer of 6nm 4,7-diphenyl-l, 10-phenanthroline (BPhen) (1), with a base contact of 13 nm aluminum (2), followed by a Exciton blocker layer of 6nm 4,7-diphenyl-l, 10-phenanthroline (BPhen) (3), a 30 nm thick absorber / electron transport layer of C 6O (4). Then a 40 nm thick, light-absorbing layer of dibenzoperiflanthene mixed with C 60 in the ratio 2: 3 was applied (5), followed by a 25 nm thick layer N, N'-diphenyl-N, N'-bis (4 '). - (N, N-bis (naphth-1-yl) amino) -biphenyl-4-yl) -benzidine (Di-NPD), p-doped, for example with 5% NDP9 (6). For improved hole transport and good adjustment of the energy levels, an inm thick layer followed, for example, NDP9 (7). The transparent cover contact consisted of 1 nm aluminum (8), 14 nm silver (9) and 60 nm tris_8-hydroxyquinolinato-aluminum (Alq3) for optimal light coupling and reflection reduction (10).
When characterizing the samples (the characteristic curve is shown in FIG. 12), it is noticeable that even without the standard absorber ZnPc, a high photocurrent of 5.67 mA / cm 2 can be achieved. It can be concluded that C 60 and dibenzoperiflanthene complement each other in their absorption properties and do not take photons from each other. A fill factor of 41% shows that the energy levels between absorber materials and Charge carrier transport layers are not yet optimally adapted to each other, although in this sample, the focus was on the photocurrent. The high open circuit voltage of 0.83V is well over 50% higher than the voltage of conventional ZnPc: C 60 systems, suggesting a favorable location of the energy levels between the absorber materials. Overall, the use of diindenoperylene in a simple cell construction can achieve a remarkable efficiency of 1.89%, which is even comparable to the efficiencies of non-transparent C 60 : ZnPc solar cells (typical values are 2-2.5%, see K. Walzer et al., Chemical Reviews 107 (4), 1233-1271 (2007); C. Falkenberg et al., Journal of Applied Physics 104, 034506 (2008)). This value could be achieved without absorption at wavelengths above about 650 nm, so that higher values can be expected by adding suitable red absorbers.
When assessing these values, it should be remembered that this is a "semi-transparent solar cell" that allows even a light transmittance, albeit a small one, and higher efficiencies could be expected for a non-transparent solar cell, as it would allow more light to be absorbed in semitransparent solar cells, only limited absorption is desired.

The aim was a combination of high photocurrent and high photovoltage in an ITO-free, top-illuminated solar cell, compared to a similar solar cell with ZnPc as the absorber material.
Then a 40 nm thick, light-absorbing layer of dibenzoperiflanthene mixed with C 60 in the ratio 2: 3 was applied (5), followed by a 25nm thick layer N, N'-diphenyl-N, N'-bis (4 '- (N, N-bis (naphth-1-yl) -amino) -biphenyl-4-yl) -benzidine (Di-NPD) , p-doped, for example, with 5% NDP9 (6).
A second solar cell was produced, which contains an exactly identical layer structure - only layer number (5) contains instead of 40 nm dibenzoperiflanthene: C 60 a layer of 30 nm ZnPc: C 60 (ratio 1: 1), ie is completely without diindenoperylene- Derivative.
The characteristics are shown in Fig. 14. The sample with ZnPc: C 60 has an open circuit voltage Voc = 0.51V, a photocurrent of Isc = 6.34 mA / cm 2 and a fill factor of 55.5%, resulting in a for this structure leads to typical efficiency of 1.81%. The comparative cell with diindenoperylene derivative has a high photovoltage of 0.82 V and a high photocurrent of 7.48 mA / cm 2 . Despite the low fill factor of 41%, the solar cell achieves a significantly higher efficiency of 2.51%, which could be improved by better hole transport materials to optimize the fill factor.

The goal here was a combination of high fill factor and high photovoltage in an ITO-free, top-lit solar cell.
A sample was prepared on glass (0) with an exciton blocking and smoothing layer of 6nm 4,7-diphenyl-l, 10-phenanthroline (BPhen) (1), with a base contact of 13 nm aluminum (2), followed by a Exciton blocker layer of 6nm 4,7-diphenyl-l, 10-phenanthroline (BPhen) (3), a 30 nm thick absorber / electron transport layer of C 60 (4). Thereupon, a 10 nm-thick light-absorbing layer was exposed Dibenzoperiflanthene (5) followed by a 25nm thick layer of N, N'-diphenyl-N, N'-bis (4 '- (N, N-bis (naphth-1-yl) -amino) -biphenyl-4- yl) benzidine (Di-NPD), p-doped, for example with 5% NDP9 (6). For improved hole transport and good adjustment of the energy levels, an inm thick layer followed, for example, of NDP9 (a p-dopant or acceptor material, Novaled AG) (7). The transparent cover contact consisted of 1 nm aluminum (8), 14 nm silver (9) and 60 nm tris-8-hydroxyquinolinato-aluminum (Alq 3 ) for optimal light coupling and reflection reduction (10).
The characteristic is shown in FIG. 16. This solar cell has a high filling factor of FF = 65.2%. The photocurrent is rather low with Isc = 3.18 mA / cm 2 , which is due to a narrow absorption through the use of only a single thin layer of a highly absorbent material. However, due to the high voltage of 0.81 V, this solar cell achieves an efficiency of 1.68%. Again, it should be noted that it is an ITO-free solar cell. The photocurrent could be increased by an electrical contact with higher transmission and thus increase the efficiency.
This example provides evidence that extremely high fill factors can be achieved by using diindenoperylene derivatives, which is of great benefit for tandem cell or multiple cell applications.
