Description

ANZEIGEVORRICHTUNG MIT GLEICHZEITIGER AUFFRISCHUNG ALLER BILDPUNKTE DISPLAY DEVICE WITH SIMULTANEOUS REFRESHING OF ALL PICTURE POINTS
B e s c h r e i b u n g Description
The present device relates to a display device for image display for television or computer with two support plates, wherein at least one support plate has an electrode layer which drives a display element, wherein the display element has an image matrix of pixels which are arranged in horizontal rows and vertical columns.
In conventional display devices, images are built pixel by pixel. In this case, the data is written sequentially, line by line and, dot by dot on the display in the individual pixels. Since this writing process takes time, the first pixel - depending on the image change sequence - is displayed at a certain point in time before the last pixel of the complete image. A complete image frame is available only for a fraction of the time on the entire screen. In particular, this problem becomes visible in the display devices for image display in 3D. It is known that in order to obtain a stereoscopic visual impression, the brain needs two images that are slightly offset in a horizontal plane. From these different images, the brain gains the depth information. The screen must therefore display two images on the same area, one for the left eye and one for the right eye. The images are to be displayed alternately in rapid succession so that the brain can perceive the two individual images as a spatial overall picture. To separate these images, a shutter eyeglasses is used which, in synchronism with the image shown, only makes one of its lenses appear transparent at a time. The image change must be very fast, so that the viewer can not perceive the darkening of the lenses. If the picture change is carried out too early, parts of the last picture are still visible. If it is carried out too late, the next picture is already being set up. In these cases, there are intermediate images, so-called ghost images, which can lead to headaches in the worst case.
To synchronize the shutter glasses, a period must be found in which all the pixels of the new image to be displayed are already completely displayed, but the next image has not yet been started. If the darkening of the lenses is not synchronized exactly with the picture change, the information for one eye, which is intended for the other eye, becomes visible. In these cases, there is a drastic reduction of 3D effect. Furthermore, the period in which the glasses switch the picture free, should not be too short, as the image brightness with longer darkening continues to decrease. The image on the screen then has to be displayed brighter, resulting in increased energy consumption.
It is therefore the object of the present invention to provide a device which avoids a continuous pixel-based image change, which is a fundamental problem of the conventional display devices.
This object is solved by all features of independent claim 1. Advantageous developments are specified in the dependent claims 2 to 16. Furthermore, the task is characterized by all the features of the independent Claim 17 solved. In the dependent claims 18 to 22 all, advantageous developments are given.
For this purpose, it is provided according to the invention that display values for the picture elements of a picture frame are stored successively, line by line, in a first memory, wherein the picture elements are only driven simultaneously if all display values of the picture period for the complete picture matrix in the first memory are completely present , In this way, the complete image information of an entire image frame can be written into the memory without changing the image information of the previous image period currently displayed by the display element. After completion of the writing process, a transfer of the charge from the memory to the respective current cell of the image matrix is simultaneously triggered for all pixels. Thereafter, the image structure for the next image in the memory can be done. The caching is completely on the display device. The technique of serial transmission of the image information to the output medium remains unchanged.
Advantageously, the memory may comprise a memory matrix of memory elements, wherein each pixel is assigned a memory element. Consequently, each pixel can be connected directly to a memory element. The information structure of a complete image frame for all pixels of the display element can be executed in the memory. Only in a separate subsequent step, the information transfer to the pixels of the display element by overwriting the display values from the memory to the pixels can be performed. The memory elements may be formed here as capacitors, transistors, or superconducting magnetic memory elements.
A further measure according to the invention can provide a second memory for temporarily storing the display values for a new image frame of a subsequent image period, while the first memory drives the pixels during a current image period. In an advantageous manner, all pixels of the display element can synchronously represent the respective current image frame, which comprises the display values that the first memory provides over the entire image period. Subsequently, when the storage operation is completed in the second memory and all readings of the next frame period are completely present therein, the second memory takes over the driving of the pixels. The second memory may advantageously be arranged adjacent to the first memory. The second memory may also include a memory array of memory elements associated with the pixels of the display element. The memory elements of the second memory may be formed, for example, as capacitors.
Alternatively, a drive unit may be provided which has drive circuits for each liquid crystal molecule, wherein, in particular, the drive unit simultaneously transfers all the display values of a completely stored image frame of one frame period to the pixels. In this case, the drive circuits may be formed, for example, as transistors. The drive unit according to the invention can generate the transfer pulse when the storage operation of a complete image frame in the memory is completely completed. After overwriting, the image structure of the subsequent image frame begins in the memory. The control electronics need not be changed except for the generation of the transfer pulse. The image frame currently represented by the image matrix remains unchanged within a frame period. There are no intermediate images.
The display device according to the invention can be advantageously designed for displaying SD images, wherein a left eye image frame and a right eye image frame can be sequentially displayed by the display device. The display device may be synchronized with a shutter eyeglass that addresses the first image frame to the left eye and the second image frame to the right eye to produce a 3D effect.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the display device may be implemented as an LCD screen. Here, the pixels may be formed as liquid crystal molecules or ferroelectric liquid crystal molecules. Liquid crystals are organic compounds that have both liquid and solid properties. Liquid crystal molecules have a dipole moment. The ferroelectric liquid crystal molecules also arrange such that a spontaneous polarization is formed in the liquid crystal. In addition, the liquid crystals have a strong birefringence, so that a light, such Liquid happens, becomes elliptically polarized. If a voltage is applied to the liquid, the liquid crystal molecules align themselves with the electric field, the effect of birefringence remains. A pixel on the display element can thus be displayed light or dark.
Advantageously, the liquid crystal display element can be arranged between two carrier plates, which are formed as glass plates. In this case, the inner sides of the glass plates can be coated with at least one electrode layer, which can be formed in particular from indium / tin oxide. By applying a voltage by means of the electrode layer, the liquid crystal molecules are aligned. Depending on the magnitude of the voltage, the liquid crystal molecules may be deflected differently from their original orientation. Depending on the angle between the optical axis of the liquid crystal molecules and the direction of incidence of the light, the shape of the ellipse, which determines the polarization of the light, can be varied. In this way, the light intensity leaving a pixel can be changed.
It can be inventively provided that the glass plates have at least one orientation layer to force the liquid crystal molecules in a predefined direction. The orientation layers can be formed, for example, from a polymeric material. Furthermore, the orientation layers can be arranged on the electrode layers. The liquid crystal display element may be attached between the orientation layers. Advantageously, grooves can be introduced in the orientation layers, which align the adjacent liquid crystal molecules in a predefined spatial direction. In this way, a helix can be generated in the liquid crystal layer when no electric field is applied. To achieve this, the glass plates are rotated at a certain angle to each other, so that the liquid crystal molecules influenced by the orientation layers follow this rotation. Thus, a helical transition of the dipole moments of liquid crystal molecules can be provided. It can thus be formed a helix whose angle of passage corresponds to the angle between the glass plates. The angle can be selected as 90 °, 180 °, or 270 °. According to the invention, two polarizers can be arranged on the outer sides of the glass plates. Advantageously, the polarizers can be designed as a polarizing filter, wherein in particular their polarization directions are rotated by 90 ° to each other. Thus, the polarized by the lower polarizer light in the liquid crystal layer can undergo a rotation of its plane of polarization of 90 ° and then pass unhindered through the upper polarizer. But if a field is created, this field forces the liquid crystal molecules to align along the field lines. The helix is destroyed. Consequently, no rotation of the plane of polarization of the light takes place. The light can no longer pass through the upper polarization filter unhindered. The spread of light is thereby prevented, the dot on the display remains dark. If the polarization directions of the polarizers are selected parallel to each other, the pixel remains dark and becomes transparent only with increasing voltage. This allows the contrast ratio to be generated on the display element. In further advantageous embodiments of the present invention, the polarizers can be rotated by 180 ° or 270 ° to each other in order to achieve an even better contrast ratio. Advantageously, the polarization directions of the orientation layers can be selected equal to the polarization directions of the nearest polarizers.
According to the invention, it can be provided that at least one, in particular two, compensation foils are arranged on the outer sides of the liquid-crystal display element in order to compensate for a color splitting of the light passing through the liquid-crystal display element. During the propagation of the light through the liquid crystal, there may be a color shift, since the refractive indices and the propagation direction of the light depend on the wavelength. The compensation foils can advantageously serve to cancel the phase shift for different colors. Thus, it can be achieved that a smearing of the colors is prevented. In an alternative embodiment, the display element may comprise two liquid crystal layers to prevent color splitting. In this case, the first liquid crystal layer can be actively driven by a voltage, wherein the second liquid crystal layer is twisted in an opposite direction. When the light passes through the two layers, the phase shift caused by the first liquid crystal layer is compensated by the second layer. Furthermore, a color filter layer can be provided in order to image three primary colors red, green and blue in an RGB color space for generating. In this case, the color filter layer can advantageously comprise color-selective polarization filters. To image a hue on a pixel, three liquid crystal molecules are needed. The three liquid crystal molecules can each be assigned a color filter which selectively transmits the colors red, green and blue. The desired hue is reproduced by the proportions of the primary colors red, green and blue. In another embodiment, the color filter layer may include colored filters to convert white light to red, green, or blue. Alternatively, instead of the color filter layer, a specific gas may be dissociated in the liquid crystal display element which absorbs certain wavelengths of the incoming light and thus makes certain pixels appear colored.
According to the invention it can be provided that an amplifier plate is arranged on the liquid crystal display element. The amplifier board may comprise memory elements, in particular capacitors, for each liquid crystal molecule. The storage elements may advantageously serve to maintain the charge of liquid crystal molecules during a frame period. In order to display the display values of a picture frame by means of a liquid crystal display element, a charge is applied to the liquid crystal molecules whose height corresponds to the data information. The applied charge can degrade relatively quickly. In order to obtain the charge, the liquid crystal molecules can each be connected in parallel with an additional capacitor. After the charge has been applied, the liquid crystal molecules are switched back into the high-resistance state by the additional memory elements, in which the memory elements build up an additional resistance. As a result, the charge is maintained longer, so that the emission brightness of the liquid crystal display element is substantially maintained during one frame period.
Alternatively, the display element may include ferroelectric liquid crystal molecules to obtain the charge at the pixels during a frame period. The ferroelectric liquid crystal molecules have the property of storing electric fields for a long time. Thus, an improved contrast of the displayed image frame can be achieved. Only after the display values for the next frame in the first and second memory are available, the ferroelectric liquid crystal molecules can be switched.
According to the invention, an illumination plate can be arranged adjacent to one of the glass plates in order to either actively illuminate the display element or passively illuminate it with reflected light from a light source. An active lighting panel may include, for example, light emitting diodes or organic light emitting diodes. Alternatively, the illumination plate may be embodied as a mirror which reflects the light of a particularly punctual light source onto the liquid crystal display element.
The display device according to the invention can thus be used for image display of 3D images, wherein in particular the display device is designed as an LCD screen.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, OLEDs can be provided as pixels. In this case, the carrier plates may be formed of different carrier materials, which may be designed to be flexible, among other things. In this case, the OLED pixels can emit a colored light directly by applying a voltage by means of the electrode layer.
According to the invention, there is likewise the advantage that problems of image representation during normal 2D television operation, which arise in particular when outputting calculated intermediate images, can no longer be reduced pixel by pixel but imagewise.
Furthermore, the stated object is achieved by a method having the features of claim 17. In the dependent claims 18 to 22 advantageous embodiments are described.
The method according to the invention comprises the possibility of displaying images for television sets and computers by means of a display element which is arranged between two support plates and comprises an image matrix which are arranged in horizontal rows and vertical columns. For this purpose, the invention provides that the image structure of a picture frame is carried out in two separate steps. In the first step, all Display values of a picture frame for the picture elements stored one after the other line by line in a first memory. In the second step, the pixels are driven simultaneously. The second step is initiated when the first step, that is, when the storage operation for all the display values of a frame period for the complete image matrix in the memory is completely completed. In this case, each pixel is assigned a memory element.
In a possible alternative of the present invention, a second memory may be provided to perform the steps of the inventive method alternately with the first memory. In this case, an image frame is set up in the first memory, while the second memory assumes the transfer of the display values to pixels of the display device. In a still further alternative of the invention, a drive unit may be provided which carries out the second step of the method according to the invention. In this case, the drive unit generates a transfer pulse when the storage operation of the first step in the memory is completely completed. The pixels can be embodied as liquid crystal molecules, ferroelectric liquid crystal molecules or OLEDs.
The method according to the invention can serve to display 3D images. Here, the display element may be advantageously embodied as a liquid crystal display element comprising an image matrix of liquid crystal molecules. According to the invention, the display information for the respective liquid crystal molecule can be written into a first memory in a first step. The liquid crystal molecules still retain their previous voltage information at this time. As a result, the electric field is not changed and the liquid crystals retain their previous direction. After writing a complete image frame, the image information from the memory is now transferred directly to the liquid crystal molecules in the second step. In this way, the electric field of all pixels of the entire screen is changed simultaneously and the new image information is displayed simultaneously in all the pixels. For a pair of shutter glasses, the complete time frame to build a new image frame is now available. The left and right images for the glasses are completely separated from each other. Thus, ghost images in the representation of the image frame can be completely avoided. The synchronization of the shutter glasses and display device can therefore be done more accurately. Furthermore, the displayed image is not changed within this period. Consequently, the image brightness of the display does not need to be raised in 3D operation. Conventional monitors that produce the 3D effect using shutter glasses must radiate much brighter, since the output brightness is lost due to the short time in which the left or right stereo image of the shutter glasses is available. Another essential advantage of the present invention is that the display device according to the invention does not have to be operated with an extremely high frame rate with which the effect of ghosting should hitherto be avoided. Advantageously, the conventional method of synchronizing the shutter glasses and the display device can remain unchanged.
Features and details which are described in connection with the method according to the invention, of course, also apply in connection with the device according to the invention and vice versa.
Furthermore, the device according to the invention can be operated by the method according to the invention and synchronized with a shutter eyeglasses that alternately addresses an image frame to a left eye and an image frame to a right eye to produce a 3D effect.

A. FIG. 1 shows an alternative embodiment of the present invention. The display device 1 is in this case designed as an LCD screen, which is designed inter alia for displaying 3D images. There are two support plates 20 shown, which can be produced as glass plates 20 according to the illustrated embodiment. The glass plates 20 each have an electrode layer 30, which is arranged on the inner sides 21 of the glass plates 20. Between the glass plates 20, a liquid crystal display element 10 is arranged, which has an image matrix M of liquid crystal molecules 1 1, which are arranged in horizontal rows Z and vertical columns S. By applying a voltage by means of the electrode layer 30, the liquid crystal molecules 1 1 are aligned along the field lines. The charge on the liquid crystal molecules 1 1 in this case corresponds to the display values 12 of a current image frame A, which is formed by the image matrix M. For generating a 3D effect, an image frame A of a left-eye image period and a next image frame of the subsequent image period are successively displayed by the image matrix M. On the outer sides 22 of the glass plates 20, two polarizers 40 are mounted. The polarizers 40 have different polarization directions, which are rotated in the illustrated alternative embodiment by 90 ° to each other. The display element 10 is illuminated with the light of a lighting plate 60. First, the light emitted by the illumination plate 60 passes through the lower polarizer 40 and is linearly polarized. First, the polarized light passes through the lower glass plate 20, enters the display element 10 and undergoes a rotation of the polarization plane by 90 °. Then the light passes through the top Polarizer 40 unhindered when no voltage is applied through the electrode layer 30. According to the invention, a memory 50 is provided on one of the glass plates 20. The display values 12 for the liquid crystal molecules 1 1 of the image frame A are first completely stored in the memory 50 and then transferred simultaneously to the liquid crystal molecules 11. During a complete time period between the image change, the liquid crystal molecules 1 1 show the display values 12 of the complete image frame A.
Figure 2 shows an exemplary representation of a pixel in a conventional liquid crystal display device and Figure 3 in the display device according to the invention. Both figures show the basic building blocks of a pixel based on the LCD technology. Here, a liquid crystal display element 10 is disposed between two glass plates 20. The glass plates 20 each have an electrode layer 30 on the sides 21 which face the display element 10. Furthermore, the glass plates 20 have a drive unit 70 which comprises drive circuits 71 for liquid crystal molecules. In addition, the glass plates are provided with an alignment layer to align the liquid crystal molecules in a predefined direction. On the outer sides 22 of the glass plates 20, a polarizer 40 is mounted in each case, which can be performed by way of example as a polarizing filter. The schematically represented pixel is designed to represent any color in an RGB color space. The color is composed of three basic colors, red, green and blue. The pixel is therefore assigned three liquid crystal molecules that map the primary colors. By applying a voltage by means of the electrode layer 30, an electric field is induced in the display element 10. The liquid crystal molecules align with the field. The stronger the applied field, the stronger the inclination of the optical axes of the liquid crystal molecules to the field. When a linearly polarized light polarized by the upper polarizer 40 enters the liquid crystal layer 10, it becomes elliptically polarized. Depending on the orientation of the optical axis of the liquid crystal molecules to the light propagation direction, that is, depending on the magnitude of the applied voltage, the polarization of the light changes. The ratio of the intensity between two vertically polarized sub-beams of elliptically polarized light can thus be varied, and finally the intensity of the light transmitted through the lower polarizer 80. Thus, on the one hand, the proportion of the respective base color R, G, B is changed on the pixel to colorize the pixel, and on the other hand, the brightness of the pixel is generated to produce a contrast ratio on the display element 10.
In contrast to the embodiment of the invention shown in FIG. 3, the liquid-crystal molecules in FIG. 2 are driven in succession, which leads to a time difference in the representation of display information on individual liquid-crystal molecules. As shown in FIG. 3, according to the present invention, there is provided a memory 50 comprising memory elements 51 for each liquid crystal molecule. The display values for the liquid crystal molecules are first successively written in the memory elements 51 of the memory 50. The liquid crystal molecules retain their previous voltage information at this time. The electric field is not yet changed by the electrode layer 30. The liquid crystals retain their alignment. After the storage process in the memory 50 is completely completed, the stored readings are now transferred simultaneously to the liquid crystal molecules. The electric field of all pixels of the entire image matrix is simultaneously changed by the electrode layer 30. The new image information is simultaneously transferred to all liquid crystal molecules. A complete image frame is displayed the entire time between the image change to the construction of a new image frame by the display element 10.
FIG. 4 shows a known method in which an image frame A (ti) is built up pixel by pixel on an image matrix of a display device. In this case, the data is written sequentially, line by line and, dot by dot on the display in the individual pixels. At first, the previous image frame is still almost completely visible. Overwriting the display values continues. Only at the end of the image construction is the image frame A (dt) completely visible only for a short time dt. In particular, this problem becomes visible in the image display in 3D, where the display device must display two images on the same image matrix, one for the left eye and one for the right eye. A pair of shutter glasses makes only one of their lenses appear transparent in synchronism with the displayed image, so that the images are alternately addressed to the left or the right eye. The time dt in which the shutter glasses is switched must be determined very accurately, in which all the pixels of the new image to be displayed are already completely displayed, but the next image has not yet been started. This can result in ghosting when the information is visible to an eye that is looking for the eye other eye are determined, such as the next frame B (ti + T), if the picture change was made too late. The time in which the entire image frame A (dt) is available is very short. Therefore, the display device must radiate with increased brightness so that the viewer can perceive the image information in the short time dt, which may lead to an increase in power consumption.
The steps of the method according to the invention for image representation are shown schematically in FIG. 5 on the entire image matrix and in FIG. 6 using the example of a line Z of the image matrix M. In this case, display values for the picture elements of an image frame A are stored in succession, line Z for line Z, in a first memory 50. According to the invention, the pixels are actuated simultaneously by a drive unit 70 only when all display values of the coming frame period for the complete image matrix are completely present in the memory 50. The display values 12 of the image frame A are written in the memory 50, and a memory element 51 is provided for each liquid crystal molecule. The current image information on the display element is not changed yet. After completion of the writing process, the display values 12 of the image frame A are transferred simultaneously to all pixels by a drive unit 70 via an electrode layer 30. The drive unit 70 in this case has drive circuits 71 for each liquid crystal molecule.
Thus, ghost images are completely avoided in the image representation according to the invention. In addition, synchronization can be more accurate to create a 3D effect. The displayed image frame is not changed within a time between image changes. The time in which a lens is opened, can thus be increased.
