Abstract

A black box recorder system and associated method for use in a well, such as an oil well, the system comprising a black box recorder including one or more inputs for receiving data from a measurement device in the well, a data storage unit, and a transmitter for wireless data transmission; and a receiver for the wireless data transmission, the receiver being located on a retrieval unit. The recorder records data received and may include time indicators in the recorded data. When the data is to be recovered a retrieval unit is brought into range of the transmitter and the data required is transmitted to the retrieval unit. The transmitter and receiver may be operable to transmit using electromagnetic transmission techniques.
