Description
Protection device of improved quality for electronic equipment
The invention relates to a protection device of improved quality for electronic equipment which contains an external shell surrounding the internal cavity accommodating the electronic equipment, and a shielding insert situated on the inside of the external shell and at least partly made of metal, and the internal cavity has a free opening for inserting the electronic equipment.
Due to the development of the electronic and information technology industry, today computer technology, telecommunication and other data recording devices have become widely used which are small and light, consequently they are favourably portable, so users can take such devices with them anywhere. However, such portable electronic devices, e.g. the so-called "'laptops", are very much exposed to electromagnetic radiation and other electric effects coming from the environment.
Several solutions have been introduced for protection against electric environmental effects. Patent application no FR 2.620.895 describes a protective house against thermal and electronic effects, in the case of which there are insulating bodies inside the protective house made of metal, and with the help of these insulating bodies a suitable protective distance can be created and maintained - against external thermal and electric effects - between the casing of the electric device and this protective house. However, the disadvantage of this solution is that because of its weight and size it is not suitable for the simple protection of portable electronic devices while they are being moved around.
Patent specification no SK 286.329 describes a portable protection device which is suitable for protecting certain electrionic devices, e.g. mobile telephones, against electromagnetic exposure. However, its disadvantage is that due to its rigid wall construction its applicability is significantly limited.
Our aim with the solution according to the invention was to overcome the deficiencies of the known protective equipment constructions elaborated for electronic equipment, and
to create a version which is light, has a pliable external shell, as a result of which it is easy to handle and is also suitable for carrying larger portable electronic devices, e.g. laptops and for protecting them against electric and electromagnetic effects while being moved around.
The realisation of the protection device according to the invention was based on the recognition that if thin fibres are made from a metal alloy material identical or very similar to the known metal alloy material of rigid protective boxes resistant to electromagnetic radiation, and then knitted fabric is created from these fibres which is then formed into a pliable shielding case having a geometrical construction other than the ordinary, and this shielding case is provided with a novel cover on the outside and, in a given case, on the inside, then a light, pliable, portable bag-like holder having a specific construction and providing protection against electromagnetic and other electric radiation can be created, and so the task can be solved.
In accordance with the set aim, the protection device of improved quality for electronic equipment, - which contains an external shell surrounding the internal cavity accommodating the electronic equipment, and a shielding insert situated on the inside of the external shell and at least partly made of metal, and the internal cavity has a free opening for inserting the electronic equipment -, is constructed in such a way that the shielding insert is made of pliable fabric consisting of filling threads at least partly having a metal alloy material and warp threads at least partly having a metal alloy material, by knitting, where the shielding insert has at least two facing sides, and at least a certain section of the free edges of the facing sides are connected to each other directly or via a conductive intermediate element ensuring conduction along the entire contacting section, while a certain section of the free edges of the facing sides borders a passage opening, at least one of the facing sides is supplemented with an overlapping member made of a conductive material, in metal-to-metal contact with it, where the overlapping member is temporarily in a conductive connection with the other facing side too, and the passage opening bordered by a section of the free edges of the facing sides is temporarily closed by
the overlapping member, and so it is bridged in a way suitable for permanent electric conduction.
A further feature of the protection device according to the invention may be that the two facing sides are made of one single piece.
In the case of a possible realisation of the protection device, the overlapping member is formed by an ear that belongs to one of the facing sides, progresses from the passage opening and extends over the free opening of the external shell, and when the protection device is closed the overlapping member is folded over the passage opening of the shielding insert to cover it, and is in metal-to-metal contact with the other facing side, and the facing sides of the shielding insert and the protective space part encased by the overlapping member are surrounded by a mesh suitable for permanent electric conduction, consisting of metal alloy fibres providing protection against electromagnetic radiation.
From the aspect of the invention it may be favourable, if the free edges of the facing sides are connected to each other with fixing fibres to ensure permanent electric conduction, or the free edges of the facing sides are connected to each other via adhesive or cohesive joint to ensure permanent electric conduction.
In the case of a further realisation of the protection device, elongated strip-shaped intermediate elements made of a material containing metal alloy are inserted between the free edges of the facing sides, and the intermediate elements are attached to the free edges of the facing sides with fixing fibres ensuring electric conduction, or elongated strip-shaped intermediate elements made of a material containing metal alloy are inserted between the free edges of the facing sides, and the intermediate elements are connected to the free edges of the facing sides via adhesive or cohesive joint ensuring permanent electric conduction. in the case of an even further realisation of the invention, an insulating lining piece is placed on the internal side of the protective space part of the shielding insert. The insulating lining piece is attached to the external shell and/or to the shielding insert.
In the case of another different form of execution of the protection device the insulating lining piece is allocated to the shielding insert so that it can be removed from the protective space part of the shielding insert.
The protection device according to the invention has numerous favourable characteristics. The most important one of these is that due to the shielding insert of a novel construction made of knitted fibre containing metal alloy fibres, a pliable and light Faraday cage can be created which provides efficient protection for the electronic device placed in the internal protective space part against electromagnetic radiation and other external electric effects, while the shielding insert constructed as a Faraday cage itself is not even visible because of the external and internal covers, so the protection device, besides being light and pliable, is also aesthetic, and appears to be a practical bag that can be used in everyday life.
A further advantage of the protection device according to the invention is that the shielding insert can be manufactured in a simple way, basically using known textile industry methods, at a favourable cost, and due to the external and internal aesthetic protection the likelihood of it failing or becoming damaged is low, consequently it has a long life.
Because of its lightness, which is due to the novel shielding insert and its cover, and because of its pliable casing shell the protection device may function as a carrier device suitable for consumer purposes. Consequently it may be a version of the widely used laptop bags providing increased protection, with a very wide area of use.
Another advantage is that the shielding insert and covers that can be created with textile industry methods make it possible to create optional shapes, which increases the applicability of the protection device according to the invention even more.
Below the protection device according the invention is described in connection with execution examples, on the basis of a drawing. In the drawing
figure 1 shows a view of a version of the protection device according the invention, partly in cross-section,
figure 2 shows a view of another form of execution of the protection device, partly in cross-section.
Figure 1 shows a version of the protection device for accommodating and carrying electronic equipment 40, which is a laptop in the present case. The protection device contains the external shell 10 enclosing the internal cavity 11, and the shielding insert 20 placed inside the internal cavity 11. In order to ensure access to the internal cavity 1 1, the external shell 10 has a free opening 12 and an overlap 13 for covering the free opening 12. In order for the overlap 13 covering the free opening 12 of the external shell 10 to be able to remain in the desired position, a lock 14 is mounted on the overlap 13. The lock 14 attaches the overlap 13 and the external shell 10 to each other in the position of the overlap 1 covering the free opening 12.
As it is shown in figure 1 , the shielding insert 20 favourably fixed in the internal cavity 1 1 of the external shell 10 is made of pliable fabric consisting of filling threads 21 containing metal alloy and warp threads 22 also containing metal alloy, and it has a first side 23 and a second side 24. In the case of this form of execution side 23 and side 24 are constructed from one single piece of fabric, and there are intermediate elements 25 between two given sections of the free edge 23 a of side 23 and the free edge 24a of side 24 facing each other - the vertical sections of side 23 and side 24 in the position shown in figure 1.
The intermediate elements 25 are also made of pliable fabric consisting of filling threads 21 containing metal alloy and warp threads 22 containing metal alloy, and here they are fixed between side 23 and side 24 with the help of fixing fibres 28, by sewing. It must be pointed out here that the fixing fibres 28 can be made of the same metal alloy as the filling threads 21 and the warp threads 22, but it is not compulsory. The task of the intermediate elements 25 is to ensure a given distance between side 23 and side 24. As a result of this, side 23 - intermediate element 25 - side 24 - intermediate element 25 together determine
the protective space part 27, which is also open towards the free opening 12 of the external shell 10 through the passage opening 20a.
At least one of sides 23 and 24 - in the present case side 24 - has an ear-like overlapping member 26 going away from the passage opening 20a of the shielding insert 20 and from side 24. Obviously the overlapping member 26 is also a fabric containing pliable metal fibres consisting of filling threads 21 and warp threads 22, which in the present case forms the continuation of side 24, forming one single unit with it.
The task of the overlapping member 26 is to bend over from side 24 to side 23, create a metal-to-metal conductive contact with it, and close the passage opening 20a of the shielding insert 20 completely, creating by this a metal mesh completely surrounding the protective space part 27 of the shielding insert 20 and realising permanent electric conduction on the entire external surface of the shielding insert 20, preventing by this the protective space part 27 of the shielding insert 20 from being exposed to any electromagnetic radiation or any other electric effect.
In the interest of even greater protection, an insulating lining piece 30 is placed on the internal side 29 of the shielding insert facing the protective space part 27. In the case of the given form of execution the insulating lining piece 30 is attached firmly to the shielding insert 20 by sewing.
When using the protection device shown in figure 1, first the overlap 13 covering the internal cavity 1 1 of the external shield 10 is opened, then the overlapping member 26 covering the passage opening 20a of the shielding insert 20 and protecting the protective space part 27 of the shielding insert 20 is folded out in order to free the passage opening 20a of the protective space part 27 and also the protective space part 27 itself. Then, through the passage opening 20a of the shielding insert 20 the electronic equipment 40 to be protected, a laptop in the present case, can be slid into the protective space part 27 covered with the insulating lining piece 30. Finally the overlapping member 26 extending out from side 24 is folded over the passage opening 20a of the shielding insert 20 and
contacted with side 23 to create a metal-to-metal contact, and by this the protective space part 27 is completely closed and isolated from the external environment. Then the overlap 13 of the external shell 10 is turned over again above the overlapping member 26 already covering the free opening 12, and it is fixed on the external shell 10 with the help of the lock 14.
In this way, in the cage formed by the metal mesh resulting from the material structure of the shielding insert 20, the electronic equipment 40 placed in the protecting space part 27 of the shielding insert 20 is in a position where it is protected from external electromagnetic radiation and from other external electric exposure.
Figure 2 shows a protection device which also has an external shell 10 surrounding the internal cavity 1 1 and having an overlap 13 covering the free opening 12, and a shielding insert 20 encasing the protective space part 27 with an insulating lining piece 30. In this case too, side 23 and side 24 of the shielding insert 20 and the overlapping member 26 are made of a fabric knitted from filling threads 21 and warp threads 22 containing metal alloy.
In this case, however, the free edges 23a of side 23 and the free edges 24a of side 24 of the shielding insert are partly attached to each other via adhesive joint, by gluing in the present case, in such a way that electric conduction is ensured along free edges 23a and free edges 24a of side 23 and side 24 contacting each other. Obviously the free edges 23 a of side 23 and the free edges 24a of side 24 can also be connected to each other via cohesive joint, or even by sewing. The overlapping member 26 closing the passage opening 20a between side 23 and side 24 is also different, in the present case it is a metal zip enabling metal-to-metal contact between side 23 and side 24, that is permanent electric conduction in the closed state of the overlapping member 26, that is when the zip is pulled up, above the passage opening 20a too.
Obviously, thinner electronic equipment 40, such as a tablet, an iPod, a bank card or an electronic passport, can be inserted in a simple way in the protective space part 27 of the shielding insert 20 of the protection device of such construction.
Apart from this difference the protection device shown in figure 2 is used in the same way as the one described in connection with figure 1. It is pointed out though that when closing the passage opening 20a leading to the protective space part 27 of the shielding insert 20, the overlapping member 26, which is a zip in this case, must be pulled up, as a result of which the permanently conductive metal mesh is created on the external surface of the shielding insert 20.
The protection device according to the invention can be favourable used for the protection of all types of electronic equipment against electromagnetic radiation and other external electric effects so that the protection device itself can appear as an aesthetic, light and fashionable bag generally used in everyday life.
