Bobbie, as she was known to her family and friends, was born April 2, 1939, in Providence, R. I., to the late John and Helen Carr. Bobbie successfully completely her degree from the University of Rhode Island and then graduated from New York's Tob-Coburn School of Fashion Design. The following year she received that school's award for Outstanding Graduate. Bobbie was employed by Saks Fifth Avenue and Macy's, New York; Macy's, San Francisco and Bamburger's, New Jersey. She then spent 15 years as director of sales and marketing for the Girl Scouts of America. She relocated in 1970 to San Jose, CA, where she opened a fine fabrics retail store, called 'Fabric Carr.' A school for fine sewing followed. Bobbie specialized in the art of couture in her design studio. She continued her career with intensive 'Sew Weeks,' conducted seminars and lectures throughout the United States and abroad. She was the author of 'Couture-The Art of Fine Sewing' and several instructional videos.
In 2000, Bobbie retired to St. Simons Island. She continued to stay in touch with her many students and occasionally held special 'Sew Weeks' on the lsland. In 2004, she was presented the Lifetime Achievement award by the Professional Association of Custom Clothiers for her 'profound contributions to sewing, fashion, writing and education in the field of custom clothing.' Bobbie loved her family and friends, enjoyed entertaining in her home and was known for her wonderful parties.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Paula Elizabeth Carr Mitchell and close friend and business partner, Rena Shaefer. She is survived by many cousins; nieces; nephews; a godson, Terrence Boylan and wife, Jennifer of Barrington, R.I., and a host of friends.
