Deborah Camp Liles was killed as part of a home invasion robbery on March 23rd, at the age of 62. Debbie was a life-long musician, a passionate Christian, a wonderful wife and mother, and was possessed by a delightfully eccentric sense of humor. Though she was a remarkably talented soprano and shared that light in many contexts, God called her most to inspire a love for music in others: she directed children's choirs for more than three decades, was an elementary school music teacher for 19 years, and filled her family with music and the arts in myriad forms. Debbie defied all types: a devout Christian with an irreverent sense of humor; extraordinarily silly with an infectious laugh, yet she wrestled mightily with the brokenness of the world she saw in her students, church, and larger community; a professed introvert that nevertheless drew joy from entertaining others in almost any way; she had seemingly inexhaustible energy, except when falling asleep mid-conversation with her kids at the end of long days-everyone is unique, but Debbie was the kind of true individual that cannot help but inspire and make you smile. Her children will remember her southern cooking, extravagant Christmas celebrations and family vacations, birthday raps (original compositions often performed with dreadlock wig), and unceasing prayer and support. Coworkers and students will remember her tireless dedication to teaching them the wonder of music. Christian brothers and sisters will remember the way she challenged them with her life to truly follow Jesus every day. Philippians 1:21, a verse she repeated many times in recent months, is appropriate, uncanny, and comforting: To live is Christ, to die is gain. She is survived by Mike Liles, her husband of 41 years, five adult children, Rachel, Dana, Michelle, Gerald, and Rockey, along with their spouses, as well as eight grandchildren.
