John David Roach assisting. Interment followed in the Self Cemetery, Hornbeck under the direction of Hixson Funeral Home of Leesville.

Mrs. Burleson passed away with her family by her side on May 8, 2009 at Dubuis Hospital in Alexandria.

Barely weighing 3 pounds at birth and born with a fighting spirit, she met and overcame numerous challenges throughout her life with the kind of love only a mother has for her children and with the same fighting spirit she has shown throughout her illness.

Her most important role in life was her commitment to her family and support for her husband as he served in the United States Navy for 30 years, traveling the world, entrusting the care of their six children to her at home. She fulfilled that role with tremendous love and pride.

Having lived many places, she was most fond of the time spent stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. She loved the beach and the beautiful sunshine. When the time came that she could work outside the home, she enjoyed working for many years as a Sales Associate at Montgomery Wards in Alexandria.

Mrs. Burleson was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Pineville. She was born in Provencal, April 26, 1929, recently celebrating her 80th birthday.

She is survived by two sons, Ronald Burleson (wife Aimee) of Acworth, Georgia; Johnnie Paul Burleson, Jr (wife Rebecca) of Sugarland, Texas; two daughters, Sheryl Roach (husband David) and Darla Swanson, both of Pineville; daughter-in-law Rebecca Burleson of The Woodlands, Texas.

"Memaw" is also survived by her ten grandchildren, Ron Burleson, Jr., Jason Burleson, Mark Burleson, Amy Burleson D'Ambra, Lisa Burleson, John David Roach, Robbie Swanson, Danny Swanson, Jeremiah Burleson, and Julie Burleson; seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Charles Brister of Shreveport; her sister, Myrtle Salim of Natchitoches; numerous extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Retired USN SHCM Johnnie Paul Burleson, Sr., two sons; Barry Ainsley Burleson and Robert Kevin Burleson; a grandson, Paul Allen Roach, her twin sister, Dorothy (Brister) Perry; her parents, Alice Lula and Donald Edward Brister, and Nettie and Charlie Walters, the grandparents who became "Mama and Daddy" to the twins after losing their mother at birth.

Pallbearers were Ron Burleson,Jr., Jason Burleson, Mark Burleson, John David Roach, Danny Swanson, Jeremiah Burleson, Tommie Stringer, and Jason D'Ambra.

Honorary pallbearers Amy D'Ambra, Lisa Burleson, and Julie Burleson.

Her family would like to express their love and gratitude to the staff who cared for her at Cabrini Hospital and Dubuis Hospital, with a very special note of thanks to Dr. Hong Liu and Dr. Kelly Letsinger.
