James Edward Turner, 91, of Kilmarnock died Monday, June 25, 2007. He was born on January 31, 1916, son of the late Taylor E. and Irene Stinnett Turner. Mr. Turner was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Hannah Gould Turner. He was an active member of the Kilmarnock Seventh-day Adventist Church and a U. S. Army veteran of World War II serving in Europe and Africa as a medic. Mr. Turner was a charter member of the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 33 and received the Meritorious Service Award for his 50 years of active, outstanding and dedicated service on May 29, 2005. It is generally acknowledged, that over the years he participated in over 1500 safety patrols and rescued more than 250 people from the water. He also served as the Flotilla commander for five terms, receiving many awards including the National Commodore's Award for Vessel Examination and Outstanding Member Achievemant Awards for Operations and Vessel Safety Checks. Auxiliary member Turner's expertise, dedication and devotion to duty were considered to be in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Coast Guard and the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Shirley T. and Franklin Fisher of Kilmarnock; son and daughter-in-law, James E. Jr. and Elina Turner of Miramer Beach, Fla; eight grandchildren, Frank Jr., Garnett, and Gregory Fisher, James III, John and Justin Turner, Gail Ramsey and Jeanette Viernes; 12 great grandchildren; sisters, Mattie T. Pittman of Irvington, Betty T. Somers of White Stone, Doris T. Metz of Mechanicsville, Sylvia T. Hill of Richmond and Lillian T. Marsh of Chesterfield; three brothers, Robert E. Turner of Linesville, Pa. and George E. Turner of Kilmarnock and Taylor E. Turner, Jr. of Charlotte, N. C., a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a. m. Friday, June 29 at the Kilmarnock Seventh-day Adventist Church, Kilmarnock with Pastor Clinton Adams and Elder Woody Pangborn officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Pallbeares will be Frank Fisher, Jr., Garnett Fisher, Gregory Fisher, James Turner, III, John Turner, Justin Turner, Robert Ramsey, Jr. and David Viernes.
