Mary Ellen Strickland, 90, of Towanda, Pa., passed away Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007.

Born in Rome Township (Bumpville), Pa., on April 8, 1917, Mary was the daughter of Leslie and Jenny (Harris) Bradley.

Mary was wed to Edward Strickland of Wysox in June of 1937. They had met while singing in church choirs, and sometimes courted on horseback by meeting on the lake road halfway between their homes.

After marrying Ed, Mary was a successful farmer and, later, businesswoman while raising six children. In later years, she raised beautiful flower gardens, seemingly able to nurture anything.

Mary and Ed were married 42 years until cancer took Ed in 1979. In 1982, she married his brother Stephen and they were together until his death in 2001. In 2003, Mary moved into the Personal Care Home of Memorial Hospital, where she enjoyed the care and companionship of old and new friends and her "true retirement."

Her sweet nature and generous spirit will be remembered by all who knew her. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, and will be missed.

Mary is survived by: her sons, Charles (Sue) Strickland of Towanda, Dan (Mary) Strickland of Towanda and Don (Kym) Strickland of Powell; her daughter, Faye (Terry) Moore of Monroeton (Weston); her son-in-law, David Sherwood of Omaha, Neb.; her sister, Lulu Robbins of Allis Hollow; and her grandchildren, Karla, Sonya, Bryan, Melissa, Wende, Cheri, Angela, Kelly, Jason, Danielle, Chad, Shawn, Eric, Renae, Sara, Destinae, Jarnie, Danielle, Deanna and Bret. She is also survived by 27 great-grandchildren and a host of friends.

She was predeceased by her husbands, Edward Strickland and Stephen Strickland; her children Sylvia, Shirley and an infant son, Mark; a beloved daughter-in-law, Shirl; and siblings Sylvia, Marie, Birdie and Raymond.

At Mary's request, services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Interment will be in Bradford County Memorial Park, Luthers Mills, Pa.

The Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home of Towanda is assisting Mary's family with arrangements.

There are no calling hours.

The family suggests that memorial contributions may be directed to the: French Asylum United Methodist Church in care of Jack Kilmer, RR 4, Box 202, Towanda, Pa. 18848, or to the Bradford County Humane Society, PO Box 179, Ulster, Pa. 18850, in Mary Ellen Strickland's memory.
