Alfa Romeo's Beautiful 8C Competizione Is Becoming a Future Classic

As this recent BaT auction sales goes to show, prices are only going up for the rare Italian GT.

Of the 500 Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione coupe and convertibles built, only 90 cars came to the U.S.A., and now one has sold through the auction site Bring a Trailer.

The 8C was first unveiled in 2006 as an homage to Alfa Romeo’s eight-cylinder racing cars of the 1930s, drawing inspiration both in the form of styling and power. Packing a 4.7-liter naturally-aspirated V8 that’s good for 444 HP and 354 lb-ft of torque, the 8C wasn’t a slouch but it was also by no means a competitor to Ferrari‘s offerings — but for Alfa, that wasn’t the point.

Positioned more as a lazy V8 grand tourer, the 8C was the driver’s car of choice — after all, as the saying goes, “You can’t be a true petrolhead until you’ve owned an Alfa.” Expect a six-speed semi-auto gearbox and rear-wheel-drive with very little stopping the car from encouraging you to have fun, a sparse interior that’s swathed in leather, and an exterior that made this car one of the most beautiful of its era, if not ever made.

Plenty of retro elements feature all around the car, from Alfa’s signature cloverleaf-style 20” rims to the optional “Rosso 8C Competizione” paint, and notably, the flattened rear end that’s centered around two large, round rear lights.

When new, this car cost $292,525 USD. Today, it sold on Bring a Trailer for $349,000 USD — a handsome profit, and figures that go to show that this car is on its way to becoming a future classic, despite its reputation. Elsewhere in the automotive world, Bring a Trailer recently sold its most expensive car: a 2005 Porsche Carrera GT.
