The region of Lugano is home to many brilliant museums, from tiny heritage museums set in traditional crofting homes to modern-new built museums. There are many reasons why you might be drawn into a museum. It could be for the love of art, the need for pictorial stimulation, a desire to be exposed to new ideas, or perhaps because it’s a dry space to while away a wet afternoon. Whether you’re interested in nature, geology, arts, history or people, you’ll find museums across the region filled with fascinating exhibits to ignite your curiosity. Moreover, Lugano, among all its many forms of entertainment, features many theaters, both historic and contemporary, to tantalize you with music, drama, comedy and plays of every kind.

Das Kunst- und Kulturzentrum Lugano ist heute schweizweit ein kultureller Bezugspunkt. Das LAC ist Ausdruck der Identität der Stadt Lugano in ihrer Rolle als kultureller Knotenpunkt zwischen Nord- und Südeuropa. Die Räumlichkeiten des eindrücklichen Baus am See sind Schauplatz zahlreicher Ausstellungen und Events, Konzertreihen, Theaterund Tanzfestivals. The Museo d’arte della Svizzera italiana born from the merger between the Museo Cantonale d’Arte and the Museo d’Arte di Lugano. In its exhibitions venues, LAC and Palazzo Reali, it promotes exhibition projects aimed at exploring modern and contemporary art, as well as its collection – whose works range from the early fifteenth century until today.

Il Museo d’arte della Svizzera italiana, Lugano nasce dall’unione del Museo Cantonale d’Arte e del Museo d’Arte di Lugano. Nelle sue due sedi espositive, LAC e Palazzo Reali, propone linee espositive volte ad approfondire l’arte moderna e contemporanea, oltre che le sue collezioni – le cui opere spaziano dagli inizi del Quattrocento ad oggi.

SUBLIME GIOVANNI SEGANTINI: LIGHT AND LANDSCAPE

The exhibition retraces the evolution of landscape painting from the early nineteenth century until today, comparing the majestic “Alpine Triptych” by Giovanni Segantini with about sixty works from the MASI collection, including works by Turner, Boccioni, Giacometti and This Brunner.

L’esposizione presenta l’evoluzione della pittura di paesaggio da inizio Ottocento ad oggi, mettendo in dialogo il maestoso “Trittico della Natura” di Giovanni Segantini con una sessantina di opere della collezione del Museo, tra cui lavori di Turner, Boccioni, Giacometti e This Brunner.

Die Ausstellung zeigt die Entwicklung der Landschaftsmalerei vom frühen 19. Jh. bis heute und vergleicht das majestätische „Alpentriptychon“ von Giovanni Segantini mit rund sechzig Werken aus der Sammlung des Museums, unter anderem mit Werken von Turner, Boccioni, Giacometti und This Brunner.

The exhibition presents different focuses linked to specific historical periods, artistic movements and artists well documented in the collections, alongside an introduction to the history of MASI, born in 2015 from the merger between the Museo Cantonale d’Arte and the Museo d’Arte di Lugano.

L’allestimento presenta nuclei tematici legati a particolari periodi storici, correnti artistiche e artisti ben documentati nelle collezioni, a fianco di una presentazione della storia del Museo d’arte della Svizzera italiana, nato nel 2015 dalla fusione tra il museo cittadino e quello cantonale.

Julian Charrière (Morges, 1987) is one the most innovative artists of his generation. The exhibition presents a selection of works, among which some never exhibited before, that touch upon the history of science and media culture, the romance of exploration and the contemporary ecological crisis.

The Hermann Hesse Museum in Montagnola, the first of its kind and the only one in Switzerland, was inaugurated on July 2, 1997 in occasion of the 120th anniversary of the writer’s birth and preserves precious tokens of the last 43 years of life of the artist and painter, who died in Montagnola in 1962. His works have been translated in 60 languages; 150 million copies have been published globally.

Il Museo Hermann Hesse a Montagnola, il primo e finora unico in Svizzera, inaugurato il 2 luglio 1997 in occasione dei 120 anni della nascita dello scrittore, conserva preziose testimonianze degli ultimi 43 anni di vita del poeta e pittore, vissuto sino alla morte, avvenuta nel 1962, a Montagnola. Le sue opere sono tradotte in 60 lingue; ne sono stati pubblicati in totale circa 150 milioni di esemplari.

Hermann Hesse and Theodor Heuss – a relationship of friendship in changing times. The exhibition’s theme is the very long friendship that connected the two men, from their first professional contact when both were young literary scholars, to the last years of their careers, when Hesse was awarded the Nobel Prize, and Heuss elected President of the Federal Republic of Germany. One important and common aspect underlying their friendship was their stalwartness in defending others, in remaining faithful to their convictions and, if necessary, opposing the dogmas that the spirit of the time imposed, even when the external conditions were difficult and dangerous.

Hermann Hesse e Theodor Heuss – un rapporto di amicizia in tempi mutevoli. La mostra ha per tema il lunghissimo rapporto di amicizia che legò i due uomini, dai primi contatti professionali, avviati quando entrambi erano due giovani cultori della letteratura, agli ultimi anni della loro carriera, che videro il primo insignito del Premio Nobel e l’altro eletto alla carica di Presidente della Repubblica Federale Tedesca. Un aspetto importante su cui si fondò la loro amicizia fu la comune fermezza nel difendere gli altri, nel rimanere fedeli alle proprie convinzioni e, se necessario, di contrapporsi ai dogmi che lo spirito del tempo imponeva, anche quando le condizioni esterne si presentavano difficili e pericolose. 34

Hermann Hesse und Theodor Heuss – eine freundschaftliche Beziehung in wechselhaften Zeiten. Die Ausstellung thematisiert die langjährige Verbindung zweier Männer, die von den frühen beruflichen Kontakten junger Literaten bis zu den späten Begegnungen zwischen einem Nobelpreisträger und einem deutschen Bundespräsidenten reicht. Ein wichtiger Grund, der diese langjährige Beziehung verfestigte, beruhte auf der beiden gemeinsamen charakterlichen Standhaftigkeit, sich für andere einzusetzen, den eigenen Überzeugungen treu zu bleiben und sich gegebenenfalls dem Dogma des Zeitgeistes zu widersetzen, auch wenn die Umstände schwierig waren.

L’exposition a pour thème la très longue relation d’amitié qui unissait les deux hommes, des premiers contacts professionnels, noués lorsque les deux étaient deux jeunes amateurs de la littérature, aux dernières années de leur carrière, qui ont vu conférer au premier le Prix Nobel et l’autre élu au poste de Président de la République Fédérale d’Allemagne. Un aspect important de leur amitié a été la ferme volonté commune de défendre les autres, de rester fidèle à leurs convictions et, le cas échéant, de s’opposer aux dogmes imposés par l’esprit du temps, même lorsque les conditions extérieures étaient difficiles et dangereuses. 35

In westlicher Vorstellung sind sie nur wilde Kopfjäger, die ihre makabre Beute als Trophäe ausstellen. Die Dayak sind auch faszinierende und geheimnisvolle Künstler. In 1998, Serge Brignoni donated 25 ethnic art masterpieces originally from Indonesia, Oceania and Africa to the Kunstmuseum of Bern. In 2018, supported by a great generosity, the Kunstmuseum donated them to MUSEC enlarging Brignoni’s nucleus preserved in Lugano since 1989.

Nel 1998, Serge Brignoni donò al Kunstmuseum di Berna 25 capolavori d’arte etnica provenienti dall’Indonesia, dall’Oceania e dall’Africa. Located in the centre of the village Brè, the Museum is dedicated to the work of the painter Wilhelm Schmid, an exponent of the German New Objectivity of the 20s, who moved to Ticino in 1937. The collection documents the important stages of his artistic development, marked by simplified forms, plain colours and strong luminosity.

Situato nel nucleo di Brè, il Museo è dedicato all’opera del pittore Wilhelm Schmid, esponente della Nuova Oggettività tedesca negli anni venti, trasferitosi in Ticino nel 1937. Il percorso espositivo documenta i momenti principali della sua evoluzione artistica, caratterizzata da una pittura dalle forme semplificate, dal colore appiattito e da violenti accenti luministici.

Mitten im Dorf Brè gelegen, ist das Museum dem Werk von Wilhelm Schmid, Maler, gewidmet, einem Vertreter der deutschen Neuen Sachlichkeit der 20er Jahre, der sich 1937 im Tessin niederliess. Die Sammlung zeigt seine künstlerische Entwicklung, die von vereinfachten Formen, schlichten Farbtönen und starken Lichtakzenten geprägt wird.

The exhibition, created on the basis of a cooperation agreement between the municipality of the City of Lugano and the Association of Memorial Museums of Latvia, is dedicated to the Swiss exile of the Latvian writers Rainis and Aspazija at the beginning of the Twentieth Century.

A professional painter, meticulous in his choice of favourite subjects: very detailed landscapes particularly in the strokes and clear-cut colours, then, gradually, delicate nuances appear, with a poorly-concealed propensity for nostalgic melancholy that, over time, does not wither the prolific garden of his memory.

Pittore professionista, puntiglioso nella scelta dei suoi temi preferiti: paesaggi dapprima molto dettagliati nel tratto e nel colore netto, poi, via via, appaiono sfumature delicate, con propensione malcelata ad una malinconica nostalgia che, col passare del tempo, non inaridisce il giardino prolifico della sua memoria.

Lieblingsmotiv des Berufsmalers sind Landschaften, die er sehr gewissenhaft angeht. Zuerst sind die Konturen scharf, die Farben klar. Dann gehen sie in sanfte Schattierungen über, die zu einer offenkundig wehmütigen Sehnsucht neigen. Trotzdem bringt der fruchtbare Garten seiner Erinnerungen über die Jahre hinweg immer wieder neue Blüten hervor.

The Malcantone has a subsoil rich in minerals, and various metals such as iron, lead, silver, and gold, extracted already in the 18th century. This tunnel, known as the “Leonilde”, is now open to the public to explore the spectacular and characteristic elements of the mining world. The Sessa mine is unique, offering the only possibility to experience the history of the extraction of gold minerals in Switzerland.

Il Malcantone ha un sottosuolo ricco di minerali, si suppone che già nei secoli passati si estraessero vari metalli, in particolare oro, argento, ferro, e piombo. La galleria, chiamata Leonilde, consente oggi di scoprire gli elementi più spettacolari e caratteristici del mondo minerario. La miniera rappresenta l’unica esperienza possibile per vivere la storia della coltivazione e dell’estrazione di minerali auriferi in Svizzera.

Of particular interest is the fonds of the Lugano photographer Vincenzo Vicari, composed of more than 200,000 pictures.

The forge, built in 1860, is the only one of its type still in existence in Switzerland. Here locals produced iron tools like scythes, sickles, shovels, spades and hoes. In 1992 the “Fondazione del Maglio del Malcantone” restored it in order to preserve some local history for the future generations of Malcantone.

Il Maglio del Malcantone è l’unico esemplare a leva attualmente esistente in Svizzera. L’edificio, costruito nel 1860, ospitava un’officina dove si lavorava il ferro per ricavarne attrezzi e oggetti di uso comune. Nel 1992 la “Fondazione Maglio del Malcantone” ristrutturò l’officina e l’edificio per tramandare ai posteri parte della storia del Malcantone.

Diese Hammerschmiede wurde 1860 erbaut, und sie ist zur Zeit der einzige Schwenkhammer in der Schweiz. In dieser Werkstatt wurde Eisen zu Werkzeugen und Gebrauchsgegenständen verarbeitet. Im Jahre 1992 das „Fondazione Maglio del Malcantone” restaurierte es somit, dass ein Stück Geschichte des Malcantone weitergegeben werden kann.

Construit en 1860, ce marteau-pilon est l’unique exemplaire à levier qui existe actuellement en Suisse. Dans cet atelier on travaillait le fer pour en tirer des outils et plusieurs objets d’usage commun. En 1992, la « Fondazione Maglio del Malcantone » remit l’édifice et son atelier en état afin de transmettre à la postérité l’histoire du Malcantone.

A musical season dedicated primarily to classical music but open to other art forms as well. The programme features the world’s leading symphony orchestras performing repertoires intended for large orchestras and hence with very wide expressive ranges. LuganoMusica events are held throughout the year and organised into various cycles including recitals, chamber music concerts and a cycle dedicated to the new generation of performers and various forms of contemporary music.

Stagione musicale dedicata principalmente alla musica classica e aperta ad altre forme artistiche. LuganoMusica ospita le più importanti orchestre sinfoniche del mondo a esibirsi in repertori votati al più ampio organico orchestrale, e quindi alla più ampia varietà espressiva. Il programma esteso sull’arco di un anno e articolato in vari cicli, presenta inoltre récital, concerti di musica da camera, un ciclo dedicato alla nuova generazione d’interpreti e diverse musiche contemporanee.

Die Konzertsaison widmet sich vorwiegend der klassischen Musik, steht aber auch anderen Kunstformen offen. Die bedeutendsten Sinfonieorchester der Welt treten hier auf, deren Repertoire für grosse Orchesterbesetzungen geschrieben wurde und somit eine umfassende Ausdrucksvielfalt mit sich bringt. Das ganzjährige Programm ist in mehrere Zyklen aufgeteilt und bietet auch Recitals, Kammermusikkonzerte, eine Bühne für junge angehende Musiker sowie für zeitgenössische Musik.
