2019
OUR MISSION The Emily Krzyzewski Center is a non-profit organization that serves as a college access hub in Durham, North Carolina, propelling academically-focused, low-income K-12 students and graduates toward success in college through its K to College programs while also offering college information and advising support to any local high school student through the Game Plan: College program. Through broader facility partnerships, thousands of additional students and community members use the Center as a place to convene, learn, and grow.
game-changing Progress
2019 can best be described as a year of progress. Progress within our programs. Progress for the Game Changer Campaign. Progress toward our goal of empowering all Durham students to chart their own paths to college. Our Scholars to College graduating seniors have a lot to be proud of. These 34 students received 192 acceptances to 70 different colleges and universities and were awarded more than $2.3 million in scholarships and grants to the schools they are attending. In its third year of operation, the Game Plan: College program enjoyed tremendous growth. By the year’s end, Game Plan: College served nearly 2,000 Durham high school students and delivered college access workshops in every public high school in Durham. A growing partnership with Durham Public Schools helped fuel this progress, and we’re excited to reach even more students in the year ahead. We are also making tremendous progress in the Game Changer Campaign. We’re enhancing our programs, expanding our facility by adding classrooms for students and staff, and growing our endowment to ensure that we can execute our mission well into the future. These represent significant steps for us, and we finished the second year of the campaign with $12.5 million raised toward our $15 million goal. We now enter the final year of the campaign with incredible momentum thanks to committed donors and supporters like you. As thrilled as we are with the progress made in 2019, we can’t stop there. We have lofty goals for Game Plan: College, we’re expanding support for our college students from two to four years, and we’re building in more robust socio-emotional support within our K to College programming. A strong finish to the campaign is fundamental to these commitments and to those we take on in the years to come. The future at the Emily K Center looks bright and we have you to thank for that. PIONEER
Scholars
Pioneer Scholars ensures that elementary and middle school students are building academic skills, achieving in school, and laying the foundation for future college success.
Pioneer Scholars served
86 STUDENTS
in the 2018-2019 school year. Through work in small groups with a certified educator and dedicated volunteers, students build core math and literacy skills. Students combat summer learning loss and pursue project-based learning during Summer Scholars. From creating obstacle courses for robots to writing their own fairy tales, students learn in fun and hands-on ways.

of Pioneer Scholars students are on track to meet college readiness benchmarks in English and 78% are on track in math, compared to 73% and 52% of their peers, respectively.

SCHOLARS to COLLEGE Scholars to College ensures that high school students challenge themselves academically and personally and explore their unique leadership potential, ultimately becoming high school seniors who are scholarship-eligible, college-ready, and admissible to a range of colleges and universities.
Students are matched with a College Readiness Counselor who they meet with regularly to make sure they are staying on track, meeting college readiness benchmarks, and discovering their own distinct interests and goals.
Scholars to College served

in the 2018-2019 school year. To help prepare them for college, seniors participate in Mock Interview Night and practice their interview skills with volunteers. All students attend Career Exploration Night and have a chance to meet local professionals and learn more about a variety of career paths.

Scholars ON CAMPUS Scholars on Campus ensures that Scholars to College alumni are prepared for higher education by providing a supportive bridge to the college transition. Through intensive workshops and advising, students enter college able to identify and connect to the campus resources that are critical to their ongoing success and receive academic, financial aid, and career advising throughout their first two years of college.
Before arriving on campus, students participate in an overnight retreat with fellow first-year students, covering topics designed to help them navigate their first semester on campus.
Students are visited on campus by a Center staff member during their first year at school. Staff help troubleshoot issues and get a good idea of how each student is settling in to his or her new campus environment.

College
Thanks to a robust and growing partnership with Durham Public Schools, the Game Plan: College team was able to hold workshops in each of Durham’s public high schools.
Game Plan: College provides college information and individualized advising to Durham high school students to ensure they have the knowledge and support necessary to apply to and enroll in college.

The college access services Game Plan: College provides are aligned with all of the critical milestones required for choosing, applying to, and enrolling in a best-fit postsecondary option. Interactive workshops are designed to increase students’ knowledge about what it takes to get to college and educate attendees on the value of pursuing education beyond high school.

MAYMarch One of the best days of the year at the Center, the annual May March event brings together all of our students and serves as a celebration of both our graduating high school seniors and the many students in our K to College programs. Families gather in our gym to watch their students file in by class, with our seniors walking in last dressed in full cap and gown. This is one of the few times that our youngest and oldest students are together. Our elementary schoolers can look at the 12th graders and realize that they too can announce their own college decisions one day.
Awards celebrating academics, leadership, and character are announced during the program. Each senior also takes the stage to share his or her college decision and accept a sweatshirt representing the chosen school from Coach K.
A COMMUNITY Resource While our academic and college access programming is the heart of the Center, we want our space to be a resource for the community as well. Each year, more than 50 other organizations and community groups use our facility to hold meetings or events. These Facility Partners help expand our reach while allowing others to further their missions at little to no cost.
We host summer basketball and drama camps for our students and other interested community members. From developing basketball fundamentals to staging a full-scale musical production in just ten days, the campers have fun and stay busy.
Together, we closed out a strong second year of the three-year Game Changer Campaign, with $12.5 million raised toward our $15 million goal. The Game Changer Campaign will provide funding to support our operations and enhance our programming, expand our physical space with a 7,500 square foot addition, and grow our endowment to ensure that our programs will be here to serve Durham students for years to come. We are in a great position heading into the final year of our campaign thanks to you!

NAMING OPPORTUNITIES are still available!
The 7,500 square foot addition to our facility will dramatically enhance the way we provide our programming. With the addition of classroom spaces, one-on-one advising rooms, meeting rooms, a student lounge, and staff offices, we will increase our amount of usable program space by approximately 75 percent. We are excited to break ground on the expansion in the spring of 2020.
