Josef Sudek (1896-1976) – A collection of photographs

Preview

A collection of photographs from a close friend of the artist, gathered over 30 years of correspondence

One of the last important collections of photographs and letters directly sent by Josef Sudek and still in private hands will be offered for sale by Binoche & Giquello on Thursday, October 18th at Hôtel Drouot, Paris. Similar collections assembled through epistolary exchanges (Dr. Brumlik and Sonja Bullaty) have already integrated the vaults of prestigious museums.

Gathered over 30 years of friendship, this important group is composed of signed prints, including some of the poet of Prague’s iconic images, unpublished photographs and letters written in the artist’s hand. All the prints were sent by the photographer. Some works are dedicated on the verso, others feature wish lists of classical records, Sudek’s second passion.

The open-house receptions organized by the photographer in his studio on Tuesday evenings were the occasion for him to share his unrivaled record collection with a close circle of artists, intellectuals and writers. Isolated in Prague by the second world war, then behind the iron curtain, Sudek depended on a lifeline of friends living abroad to obtain his precious phonographic recordings. Our collector was among the providers of inspiration. He met Sudek during his years at Prague university, and corresponded with him from 1946 until the photographer’s death in 1976.

Lots can be viewed by appointment at the expert’s gallery through October 15, then at Hôtel Drouot (room 2) October 17 and 18, prior to the sale.
