Lucien Clergue, Camargue, Study of the Light in 198 Photos

Preview

At the time of the exhibition at the Grand Palais, it seemed interesting to show an important selection of images made by Lucien Clergue in the 1960s and at the beginning of the 1970s.

It was a time of kinetic, of psychedelia in art. So Lucien Clergue followed his exploration of the lands of Provence and the Camargue, but opting for a completely different light. Strong contre-jours, reflections, high contrast prints: there was a new energy, a very powerful intensity in the graphic, abstract images that seemed to be a long way from the young, melancholy Clergue.
Lucien Clergue chose to make large prints (mostly 40 x 60cm) for this series, and many of the originals have reached us. One hundred and ninety-eight of them are presented here.
This series, which represents an important stage in Lucien Clergue’s work, has hardly been shown recently and deserves to be offered to today’s eyes.
