David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.
This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.
The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.
The best documentary screenplay award went to Errol Morris for The Pigeon Tunnel.

With the 2024 Oscars and the 2023 Emmys firmly in the rearview mirror, the film and TV awards calendar is all but ready to return to normalcy after last years Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes disrupted the first half of award season. The last major event to be impacted by the altered schedule is today’s WGA Awards, which took place in an unusual post-Oscars slot after the strikes forced the guild to delay its voting process. As most of Hollywood looks ahead to the 2024 film and TV slate, today’s concurrent ceremonies in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium and New York City’s Edison Ballroom gave award watchers one last chance to celebrate the best screenwriting of 2023.

The strike-delayed nominations for the 2024 Writers Guild Awards are out. Check out the list below.
In a flipping of the script this season, the WGA Awards will be held on April 14 – more than a month after the Academy Awards.
As always, the Writers Guild of America has different eligibility requirements than the Movie Academy, so some awards-season favorite scripts are missing from today’s nominations.

The nominees for the 2024 Writers Guild of America Awards are finally here.
The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and Writers Guild of America East (Wgae) have announced nominations for outstanding achievement in screenwriting, television, new media, news, radio/audio, and promotional writing for 2023.
Oscar-nominated screenplays for “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “May December,” “Past Lives,” “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and “Oppenheimer” were expected WGA nominations. However, surprise nods for “Air,” “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” and “Nyad” prove the WGA Awards still have a few tricks up their sleeve. If you’re wondering, “Poor Things” was not eligible because it wasn’t produced under a WGA contract, per a source close to the project.
Despite now taking place one month after the Academy Awards, the WGA nominations still carry weight this season — and could be a deciding factor for final Oscar voting. As IndieWire’s Anne Thompson predicted,...

What is a TV “comedy” in 2023? In an era of blurred genres, it’s not so cut and dry anymore. Opening Variety’s “A Night in the Writer’s Room,” Variety’s Michael Schneider asked the nine comedy writers on stage to raise their hand if their show features a death. Most did. He followed up by asking, how many of those deaths were murders?
Many kept their hands up high — but holding his hand the highest was “Only Murders in the Building” co-creator John Hoffman “I feel like that’s the beauty of [comedy], that you can kind of do anything … pick a world, be specific about it, be stupid about it, and then you’re good,” Hoffman said of the ability now on television to stretch the definition of comedy.
“It takes a lot of work to subtract comedy from real life,” echoed Boots Riley (“I’m a Virgo”) in...

This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Barry."
For years now, the narrative around "Barry" has been clear; the show is getting darker by the episode. Bill Hader and Alec Berg's HBO series has always pushed the limits of viewers' tolerance for grim twists of fate, and it bulldozed over those limits with the fantastic, endlessly bleak third season. If this trajectory held, it would mean that with just one episode to go, the final season of "Barry" should be at near-unbearable levels of tension. Instead, the penultimate episode delivered a surprise that, unlike most of the twists in the show, won't leave us with a massive sense of existential dread: it was very, very funny.
Don't get me wrong: "Barry" has been funny even in its darkest hours. Last season punctuated its most hopeless moments with clever bits about lesbians with too many dogs, and a...

This article contains spoilers for season 4, episode 6 of "Barry."
There have been some amazing cameos in the fourth season of HBO's "Barry," including Guillermo Del Toro, "Coda" director Sian Heder, and Fred Armisen, but we almost got a cameo from none other than Jennifer Lawrence. The "Hunger Games" and "Causeway" star would have played herself, much like Heder, and it could have given her a chance to show off both her dramatic and comedic chops. In the end, showrunner and star Bill Hader decided to take the story in a different direction that omitted Lawrence's role, and we got something completely different (and totally terrifying) instead.
Hader sat down with The Wrap to discuss the sixth episode of season 4, which he detailed as a chaotic experience that ultimately turned out great. There were several storylines that got changed or dropped, so Lawrence's wasn't the only one, but from what it sounds like,...

Bill Hader is certainly happy that people like “Barry,” but he also wants to be clear: the episodes you see are the product of a lot of refinement. Specifically in Season 4 Episode 6, there was an entire Sally storyline that would have (maybe) involved Jennifer Lawrence that was jettisoned and a scene that was reshot mere weeks before the series premiered.
“When you’re doing this stuff, people can tell you you’re great until they’re blue in the face, but you make a lot of mistakes,” Hader told TheWrap in our episodic breakdown interview for Episode 6. “People watch the show and go, ‘Oh my God it’s so good,’ and it’s like, ‘No, I make a lot of mistakes!’ You need smart people who aren’t afraid to tell you you’ve made a mistake to be like, ‘What are you doing?’”

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Barry” Season 4, Episode 6, “The Wizard.”]
Intuitively, “Barry” is in a darker place. Getting there has been a slow-motion process over the show’s whole run, even if it’s intensified in Season 4. Seemingly chipper characters have seen the edges of their personality corroded away. Loved ones have been murdered in matter-of-fact manners. The giant nihilistic cloud that started brewing with the central “Barry” premise — a hired killer confronted with the idea that there might be more to life than ending it — has pretty much engulfed everyone.
This week’s “The Wizard” adds another crushing prospect: In this world, the only cure for wanting revenge is death. Whether by their proximity to Barry (Bill Hader) or some unscratchable itch inside them, each person has something they want to make up for or someone they hold responsible for a simmering grudge. In Season 4, trying to outrun that feeling hasn’t worked. Ignoring it hasn’t worked,...

[This story contains spoilers for Barry season four, episode five, “Tricky Legacies.”]
Barry star Bill Hader didn’t care how Barry and Sally got to where they were going; his only concern was that they were there.
Written and directed by Hader, the fifth episode of Barry’s final season confirms that the ending of episode four was anything but fantasy. It’s now been eight years since Barry and Sally (Sarah Goldberg) decided to run away together and the couple, who are now known as Clark and Emily, are living with their son, John (Zachary Golinger), in the middle of nowhere. Barry is suddenly a man of faith who perpetually stays at home to school his son and shelter him from the truth of who his parents actually are. Meanwhile, a wig-donning Sally is working as a server at a diner, and she routinely drowns her sorrows in a bottle to get through the days. She may have had dreams of being a working actor,...

Throughout the course of its stellar four-season run, HBO's "Barry" has featured a number of cameo appearances. Most of these took the form of fictional guest characters, from Vanessa Bayer as a vapid TV executive in season 3 to the third episode of the current season, which featured both filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro as a crime lord (not coincidentally named "Toro") and co-creator Bill Hader's old Saturday Night Live cast member Fred Armisen as a doomed assassin.
Less common within the show (but just as welcome) are the cameo appearances from Hollywood figures playing themselves, such as Jon Hamm's portrayal of himself in a fantasy sequence from season 1. The latest episode of "Barry" happened to include another filmmaker playing themselves: director Sian Heder, whose 2021 film "Coda" won several Academy Awards (including Best Picture).

One of the reasons that HBO's "Barry" has become such an exceptional television series over the last four seasons is its ability to walk a tightrope between an offbeat comedy and a dark thriller. Co-creator and star Bill Hader has also successfully shifted himself as the leading man on center stage to one of many main characters in his own show. "Barry" has become just as much about examining the underbelly of dysfunctional relationships as it is about exposing the uncaring, ruthless machinations of the criminal underworld.
In season 4, episode 4, "It Takes a Psycho," there aren't a lot of romances to root for any longer. Barry and Sally (Sarah Goldberg) have gone from two innocent theatre nerds to being incredibly toxic for one another. Meanwhile, Cousineau is still heartbroken over the murder of his beloved LAPD detective Janice Moss (Paula Newsome), which really leaves only one couple to champion that...

Those surprised to see Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro in the latest episode of “Barry” may also be surprised to learn the cameo was del Toro’s idea – not that he thought it would actually happen. Creator and star Bill Hader says the “Pan’s Labyrinth” director has always been a fan of the HBO series, and told Hader at the end of Season 3 that he’d love to be in the show.
“It just so happened we had a part of this guy who sets up Hank and Cristobal with Los Amigos Gadgets, so I thought that’d be great for Guillermo and then we named the character Toro,” Hader told TheWrap during our breakdown of Season 4, Episode 3. “He seemed surprised that I actually did it. With the final season of "Barry" in full swing, series co-creator and star Bill Hader is looking to the future, and in a recent interview with Deadline (via IndieWire), he revealed that his future might feature something totally new: a horror movie with him in the lead role.
Hader actually told the outlet he has three ideas for projects he'd love to get made after "Barry" concludes this summer. Along with the horror feature and a project that he says is "kind of hard to describe," Hader also penned a script with longtime friend and "Barry" writer Duffy Boudreau. Hader called Boudreau his "best friend from Tulsa," and the writer sounds like a particularly grounding presence on set. "We've known each other since we were like 18, so you need that on set," he explained. "You need your friend from Oklahoma who goes, 'Yeah, man. That sucks.'" With “Barry” set to end its four -season HBO run next month, Bill Hader is setting his sights on making a movie.
Hader directed some of the most acclaimed episodes of the show, earning two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. After directing all eight episodes of Season 4, the longtime comedic actor’s debut feature will be a highly anticipated event for cinephiles.
In a new interview with Deadline, Hader revealed that he has written three film scripts that he is now developing. While he kept plot details for all three projects under wraps, he said that he wrote one with one of his closest “Barry” collaborators. And in an even more intriguing development, he teased that he could dip his toe into the horror space.

Hader directed some of the most acclaimed episodes of the show, earning two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. After directing all eight episodes of Season 4, the longtime comedic actor’s debut feature will be a highly anticipated event for cinephiles.

Bill Hader insists he never had any long range plans for “Barry’s” storylines.
At the Los Angeles premiere of the HBO series’ fourth and final season on Sunday, Hader told Variety when he first began the process of developing and pitching “Barry” seven years ago, he had “no idea where the series was going to end up.”
In fact, he says, Season 4 is “totally different” than his original plans. As the series wrapped, Hader revealed those final days were “very bittersweet,” but everyone was “also so tired, we were exhausted,” he said, laughing.
“Barry’s” fourth season picks up with Barry in prison after killing Janice (Paula Newsome), his mentor Gene Cousineau’s (Henry Winkler) girlfriend, in Season 1. “I had some sense of where we were headed,” said Sarah Goldberg, who plays Sally. “But I was very surprised by all the details on the way there.”

With Barry‘s fourth and final season now in the can and starting to roll out on HBO, Bill Hader has his sights set on the next goal: directing a movie.
“I would do a feature, for sure. [Barry writer and co-executive producer] Duffy Boudreau and I have written something, but there’s also things that I’ve done, there’s two other ideas that I’m knocking around,” Hader, who directed all eight episodes of Barry this season, told The Hollywood Reporter at the season four premiere on Sunday. “I’m just looking forward to taking a little vacation and then kind of being in sponge mode — read, watch some stuff. I haven’t had the space in my head to do it. We did seasons three and four back-to-back so it’s pretty wild.”
Asked if he would want to direct a movie that he’d also star in, Hader added, “I don’t know,...

As HBO's acclaimed comedy/drama series "Barry" prepares to wrap up with its fourth and final season (read /Film's review here), co-creator and star Bill Hader is learning how to stretch his directing muscles to reach the finish line. The "Saturday Night Live" alum has already demonstrated his skills behind the camera with his previous directorial efforts on the show, yet season 4 marks the first time in the history of "Barry" that he's helmed every single episode.
Hader has proven himself to be quite the auteur throughout the four-season run of "Barry." The series has developed a distinct style that's on full display in episodes like "ronny/lily," a surreal odyssey that depicts a bad day on the hitman job for Barry, and "710N," which features an exhilaratingly unique motorcycle chase sequence. Hader is primarily known for his comedic performances, but the actor started his career in Hollywood as a...

Bill Hader is laughing.
It’s the final week of principal photography on the final season of “Barry,” the Emmy-winning HBO series he launched in 2018 with co-creator Alec Berg, and even though Hader is coming to the end of a season-long shoot that saw him directing every episode himself, when TheWrap visits the set in November 2022, Hader is calm, cool and downright joyful.
It’s a refreshing contrast to the stories of filmmakers who come to the end of directing an entire season of TV and subsequently swear off ever trying that again. But it’s not an altogether surprising one, considering Hader has wanted to be a director his whole life — a dream that was somewhat put on hold when he landed “Saturday Night Live” at age 27.
“He’s so fluid and chill,” Anthony Carrigan, who plays Noho Hank on the HBO series, told TheWrap of Hader’s directing style.

[Editor’s Note: The following story contains spoilers for “Barry” Season 3.]
Barry Berkman’s final bow is almost upon us. The final trailer for the fourth and final season of “Barry,” Bill Hader’s pitch-dark comedy series, has been released by HBO, ahead of its April premiere date.
Hader, who co-created the series with Alec Berg, stars in the series as the title character, a depressed Marine vet-turned-hitman who moves to Los Angeles for an assignment, where he unexpectedly falls in with a group of aspiring actors and discovers a love for performing. Despite his questionable talent level, Barry decides to pursue this new passion and leave his criminal life behind, but finds himself frequently causing tragedy in the process.

A new, full-length trailer for “Barry” Season 4 has arrived, offering a closer look at what to expect from the final eight episodes of the Emmy-winning half-hour series. Hader’s Barry is in jail following the Season 3 finale’s big sting operation, and we get glimpses of how those around Barry – Sally (Sarah Goldberg), Gene (Henry Winkler), Fuches (Stephen Root) and Hank (Anthony Carrigan) – are dealing with this new development.
“The guy I was dating in LA killed my acting teacher’s girlfriend,” Sally is heard saying in the trailer, followed by, “I think I might be in a lot of trouble.”
Barry is in jail, seen really laying it on himself as he deals with the consequences of his actions. Fuches is also in jail, and it appears as though he’s in the same prison as Barry.

Writers had to share the spotlight with independent filmmakers and sound designers last night, but they’ll have it all to themselves tonight when the 75th annual Writers Guild of America awards are officially unveiled.
The WGA Awards took place in concurrent ceremonies tonight at New York’s Edison Ballroom and Los Angeles’ Fairmont Century Plaza. The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and the Writers Guild of America, East (Wgae) labor unions represent writers in motion pictures, television, cable, digital media, and broadcast news.
Michelle Buteau was hosting from New York and said she felt “luckier than Pete Davidson’s dick” to be presiding over the ceremony. Her raucous monologue included lines such as, “Tom Cruise is more of a ‘Bottom Gun’ than a ‘Top Gun.'”

Sunday’s 75th Writers Guild of America Awards will conclude the guild season (and a four-guild kudos weekend). Will they portend good things to come at the Oscars for the winners?
“Everything Everywhere All at Once,” written by Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, and “Women Talking,” written by Sarah Polley, are projected to win the Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay prizes, respectively. The caveat, of course, is that neither is facing its top Oscar competition at WGA due to the guild’s eligibility requirements. Martin McDonagh‘s “The Banshees of Inisherin” script, which won the Golden Globe and BAFTA, is Awol in original, as is Oscar nominee “Triangle of Sadness.” And BAFTA’s adapted screenplay champ “All Quiet on the Western Front,” written by Edward Berger, Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell, is ineligible, along with Oscar nominee “Living.”

“Succession” entered these awards with a leading 25 nominations, the most of any program in any genre. “Ted Lasso” was the top comedy with 20, tied with the leading limited series contender “The White Lotus.” But the lion’s share of categories were already decided at the Creative Arts Awards that took place over two ceremonies on September 3 and 4.
“Ted Lasso” was actually the biggest loser at those kudos going 0-10. It can still rebound at tonight’s main ceremony and repeat as Best Comedy Series, but that was a major hit, especially the Best Casting loss to “Abbott Elementary.

Bill Hader, the multihyphenate star of Barry — who has earned two Emmys for his leading role and this year earned a third acting nomination as well as nods for writing and directing on the series — doesn’t get too hung up on whether his show is still a comedy. Yes, the show is classified as such, and his Emmy-nominated co-stars Anthony Carrigan and Henry Winkler respectively deliver delightfully comic performances as Chechen mobster NoHo Hank and washed-up acting teacher Gene Cousineau. But the show, which follows the eponymous hitman as he balances a life of crime with his aspirations to make it in Hollywood (and live a normal life with his girlfriend, Sally, played by Sarah Goldberg, who also has dreams of stardom), has always balanced dark themes with equally dark humor. For Hader, the story comes first — the jokes, second. In a conversation with THR,...

In “710N,” the sixth episode of Barry’s third season, a hugely popular beignet shop opens in Los Angeles and becomes a destination for three of the show’s aimless characters. In this scene, Sarah Goldberg’s Sally opens up to the proprietor of Beignets by Mitch about her career frustrations after her TV show falls apart. Emmy-nominated writer Duffy Boudreau breaks down the first scene of the episode’s running joke about the hipster “stoner oracle.”
Barry
“Mitch is this kind of oracle dude who runs a super popular hipster venue,” Boudreau says. “People line up around the block to eat these desserts — but, more importantly, to get life advice from him.” While he gives sound guidance to Sally, she still ignores everything he has to say. “Oftentimes, the right answer is right in front of us and we know it, but...

The writing team of “Hacks” is looking to go two-for-two in the Best Comedy Writing category, but will now have to face almost a brand new slew of competition as shows like “Barry” and “What We Do In The Shadows” are back after a hiatus, as well as pilot episodes from “Only Murders In The Building” and “Abbott Elementary.” “Ted Lasso” is also back in this category looking for a rematch with “Hacks” after being defeated last year.
Here are Gold Derby’s current Best Comedy Writing Emmy 2022 racetrack odds:
“Hacks” — 9/2 odds
“Abbott Elementary” (“Pilot” by Quinta Brunson) — 5/1 odds
“Ted Lasso” (“No Weddings and a Funeral” by Jane Becker) — 13/2 odds
“Only Murders In The Building” (“True Crime” by Steve Martin & John Hoffman) — 7/1 odds
“Barry” (“starting now” by Alec Berg & Bill Hader) — 17/2 odds
“Barry” (“710N” by Duffy Boudreau) — 17/2 odds
“What We Do In The Shadows” (“The Wellness Center” by Stefani Robinson...

A number of stars doing double- and triple-duty on series have been rewarded for their off-camera work with writing or directing Emmy nominations this year, notably “Ozark’s” Jason Bateman, “Abbott Elementary’s” Quinta Brunson, “Barry’s” Bill Hader and “Only Murders in the Building’s” Steve Martin.
Meanwhile, indie film helmers are finding a warm welcome, with drama series directing noms going to Karyn Kusama for the pilot of Showtime’s “Yellowjackets,” Lorene Scafaria for the “Succession” episode “Too Much Birthday” and Cathy Yan for “The Disruption” installment of “Succession.”
Oscar winner Peter Jackson may add another trophy to his case. He earned a directing nomination for documentary/nonfiction program for his work on Disney+’s Beatles docuseries “Get Back.” Ben Stiller is up for Apple TV+ drama “Severance” and Bo Burnham is back with a nom for directing Jerrod Carmichael’s HBO standup special “Rothaniel.” Amy Poehler’s...

The 2022 Emmys ballot for Best Comedy Writing has 195 episode submissions, which means there will be seven nominees. As a reminder, last year’s winner was the pilot of “Hacks”, beating out the pilots of “The Flight Attendant” (Steve Yockey), “Girls5Eva” (Meredith Scardino) and “Ted Lasso”, along with the “PEN15” episode “Play” (Maya Erskine) and the “Ted Lasso”episode “Make Rebecca Great Again”.
Last year, an argument could be made that “Hacks” prevailed due to “Ted Lasso” having two episodes in the category and splitting its own votes. This scenario could repeat as the former only entered its season finale “The One, The Only” by the same three writing champs and “Ted Lasso” submitted both “Rainbow” (Bill Wrubel) and “No Weddings and a Funeral” (Jane Becker).

HBO is juggling multiple television shows for a shot at the Primetime Emmy Awards, which could make them a dominating force in all categories, particularly for directing and writing.
Just wrapping its season finale, “Barry” is expected to match, if not exceed, its previous 18 nomination haul last time. Actor and producer Bill Hader will be among the “locks” for outstanding comedy series and lead actor (comedy). Still, with two previous Emmy noms for directing, he’ll be in the running again with the episode “710N,” the sixth episode that finds the titular hitman attacked by Traci’s gang. Three “Barry” episodes will also vie for attention in the writing categories: “710N” (by Duffy Boudreau), “candy asses” (by Liz Sarnoff) and the finale “starting now” (by Hader and Alec Berg).

Bill Hader is back breaking down the latest episode of “Barry” Season 3 for TheWrap, and this time we’re talking about awkward junket experiences, reshoots and even a bit about the writing process for Season 4.
Episode 3, titled “ben mendelsohn,” is the episode that Hader says changed the most when the series went back for reshoots earlier this year. “All the reshoots that we did in February, which were like two weeks of reshoots, affected Episodes 1 through 6 and it was pretty extensive in some cases,” Hader told TheWrap. “Three was probably the biggest. And it was just like looking at everything cut together and being like, yeah, this doesn’t feel right.”
It was actually Hank’s (Anthony Carrigan) storyline that was significantly reworked for the episode. As originally shot, Hank came out to his Chechen gangster pals who told him they already knew and didn’t care, but once in the editing room,...
