George Brandon, PhD, is a musician, anthropologist and integrative sound and music practitioner. By high school he was playing professionally in local swing bands, rhythm and blues, gospel, and classical ensembles in his home town of Newark, NJ. His continuing musical curiosity led him to extend this early background by studying jazz, contemporary experimental European classical music, West African music, Balinese and Javanese gamelan, electronic music, Afro-Cuban chant and calypso all of which have affected his development as a composer. Studied with Chris White at the Institute for Jazz Studies, with Curtis Fuller, Jimmy Heath and Jimmy Owens at the Jazzmobile Wokshop, and received an NEA travel study grant to study with theorist and jazz composer George Russell. He has been on the faculty of the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies since 1985 and regularly presents workshops on African American congregational singing there with Ysaye Barnwell. As a certified integrative sound and music practitioner (NY Open Center 2015; International Academy of Sound Healing 2016) his practice centers on chanting and voice work, facilitating sound meditations, composition and improvisation, storytelling, and the therapeutic use of Himalayan singing bowls.
