Congratulations to Feadship on this launch, but what is wrong with the yachting media when they have to make these claims:- “This way, clean, green energy is used for hotel loads and also to juice up the battery bank.” Whether you charge the batteries from generators or ME PTO, you still need to burn diesel - although likely at optimum load and specific fuel consumption - there is no free green energy! The truth is that emissions are still produced, just displaced by time and place. 1MWh is really 700kWh of usable energy, so not sufficient for any prolonged “silent” runnning on a vessel this size. I fully support the use of hybrid solutions that can improve efficiency, lower energy demand (inc. hotel and system loads) reduce fuel consumption and emissions, but the truth is this should be baked into the DNA of every yacht built today - it should be the norm. This is a very real project, a zero fossil fuel, 70m sailing yacht, harvesting the energy from wind, hydro and solar and storing it in 5MW of batteries. This will be a truly groundbreaking example of investment in research, innovation and ambition to create an extraordinary zero emissions vessel. Following my talk on hydrogen at the Superyacht Summit Adria I decided to put together a comprehensive guide on Hydrogen for the superyacht industry. You can find the link to the guide in the comments below, but my conclusions are as follows: - There is no doubt that Hydrogen has many benefits but, its use in the maritime sector is still in its infancy. There are still major challenges to overcome, not least the volumetric energy density and how this impacts space. Although safety is a concern, this will be addressed using a combination of robust risk assessment, design, technology and effective operational procedures, as well as specialist crew training. Lack of regulations related to the use of Hydrogen as a marine fuel adds complication. The availability of “local” Green Hydrogen is a limiting factor and reliant on abundant green, or low carbon electricity. Hydrogen production is capital intensive. Plant utilisation is key to production cost and return on investment (ROI). As is guaranteed off-take. Hard to abate industrial sectors will be first in the queue. Today, Hydrogen hardly factors at all in marine fuel forecasts, and that is something to take particular note of as we will be reliant on the scale of commercial shipping for alternative fuel production and infrastructure. Cost will remain an issue for some years to come, not just the Hydrogen, but also Fuel Cells, related equipment and the complexity of the build. Liquid Hydrogen is especially challenging to handle onboard and ashore. Further, yachting is about freedom and spontaneity…it would lose much of its appeal if these were limited by the choice of fuel, never mind the effect on future resale value. Today, I believe a good case could be made for inland waterways, or ferries. Vessels which have fixed routes, and access to locally produced Green Hydrogen. But, on balance, and despite the zero carbon promise, I think it’s harder to make a similar case for yachting…perhaps in ten to twenty years time? What do you think? A great example of how hydrogen can play a part in maritime. Interesting to note that compressed hydrogen is the chosen storage method (lower volumetric energy density, but more energy efficient, less complex and easier to handle) and that for safety it is above the passenger deck. Key to this is the fixed routes, local green hydrogen production and guaranteed off-take. Great summary of the benefits of #HVO renewable diesel from mtu solutions The reality this is the only practical alternative fuel solution for superyachts until the next generation of high speed Methanol engines are released in the coming years. With reductions of up to 90% in CO2 emissions, and marginal price difference in the EU at least, why is the take up in yachting so low. One of the things I believe would help is if the major yacht Classification Societies like Lloyd's Register DNV RINA would publish a unified interpretation on its use. In addition, isn’t it time for some builders to stop dragging their heels on approving its use from launch. Funnily enough, in preparing for my talk Hydrogen: The Hope and Hype, at the Superyacht Summit Adria in April, I looked at various production and price forecasts for Hydrogen. I found California had great information on penetration and cost. But even though the price (>$30.00 kgh2) was around 3x more expensive than petrol (even once efficiency was factored in - would be even worse for a more efficient marine diesel) I was not sure if it was Green Hydrogen as it was unclear from the station operators. This article and the California Energy Commission report make it clear that most of the Hydrogen is Grey from Steam Methane Reforming! One thing of note is that often it is the producer price that is quoted, but that does not include the midstream costs of liquefaction, compression, storage and transport, nor the supply chain margins and taxes…these all add significantly to the price. There has been some confusion in the superyacht industry over the application of the EU Monitoring Reporting and Verification (MRV) and the Emissions Trading System (ETS). The response I received from the Commision is that it applies to yachts, provided they are 5000 GT and above, and are transporting passengers for commercial purposes (charter) and performing voyages under the scope of the regulation. The relevant Article is 21(1) of EU 2015/757. Clearly the charter fleet at this size is very small, nevertheless they will start building up liabilities from 2024. By 31 March each year from 2025, a verified company emission report needs to be submitted to the administering authority, and by 30 September (indicated, subject to confirmation) each year the necessary emission allowances are required to be surrendered to the administering authority - there are free no allowances. Current EU Carbon price is around €64 t/CO2 but has been over €100 t/CO2. Interestingly the "unit of work" for passenger ships is "passenger-nautical Miles" - not a very favourable unit for yachts! By 31st December 2024 the Commission will assess whether other additional ship types between 400GT - <5000GT should be included in the MRV. With the precedent set for very large commercial yachts, we will have to see how that informs the decision for commercial yachts between 400GT - <5000GT in the future? Last week was World Meteorological Day 2024 #WorldMetDay where the World Meteorological Organization released their State of the Global Climate 2023 report - link in comments below. From the Secretary-Generals Foreword: - "It was by far the warmest year on record. The global average temperature in 2023 was 1.45 ± 0.12 °C above the 1850–1900 average. Never have we been so close – albeit on a temporary basis – to the 1.5° C lower limit of the Paris Agreement on climate change.  Concentrations of greenhouse gases continued to rise. Ocean heat content and sea level reached record observed highs, and the rate of increase is accelerating. Antarctic sea ice extent hit record observed lows. Key glaciers suffered record losses." Data is absolutely essential "We cannot manage what we do not measure, and this is where WMO is ideally placed." This is true of all industries who need to transition to a zero or low carbon future. Unfortunately, the superyacht industry has so far failed in this task, we do not collect the emissions data from our industry and so we have no baseline to support any improvements we have been making on our own road to a more responsible future. With that in mind, I have updated the CO2 calculators on superyacht2030 and now includes a tool to help estimate the emissions based on engine and generator power and load. With the conclusion of the International Maritime Organization MEPC 81, there does seem to be a growing appetite for a levy of maritime CO2e emissions. Amongst others, the Marshall Islands have proposed a levy of $150 per tonne of CO2 which would add just under $500 to a tonne of MGO(marine diesel). There is still work to be done relating to the amount, it’s application and mechanism but it seems to be a key lever in achieving alignment with a the 1.5C goal.
